I Tore My Meniscus and Opted for Surgery | Path to Recovering Starts Now!

  • I found out 3 months ago that the pain that I was having in my knee was due to a medial meniscus root tear where surgery was the best option to prevent future arthritis and to help me get back running around with zero pain (Watch the video to find out how I tore it!).
This past week I entered the OR and got a meniscus repair surgery which now has me on crutches for 1-4 weeks and a full recovery to get me back better than before estimated to be 4-6 months.
As a bodybuilder/athlete, I haven’t missed a leg day in years, where it’s been hard to picture not being able to workout both of my legs, but I can only accept what I’m dealt with and will do everything else I can do to keep working towards my goal of getting shredded!
I mentioned in my last video or 2 that I had a thing coming up that shouldn’t affect my progress, well this is what I was talking about!
In this video, I go over:
How & When I tore my meniscus
Why I choose to get surgery
Why the recovery process takes so long
Why this doesn’t affect my goal of getting shredded
Also here's the link to our championship flag football game from this past summer!

Had the exact same meniscus surgery repair not long ago. July 2022. Rare to be truly repaired. Only 5% of cases are truly repairable…I see in other comments people don’t know the difference. Yours (and mine) were truly repaired…most are trimmed like getting a haircut; which is weight bearing right away and minimal downtime but depending on how much was trimmed worse long term because important tissue structure and cushion is removed. I just had some trimmed on my other one today (long story) and there is no comparison between the two types of surgeries. This one feels fine right away. They’re night and day difference.
I’m much older than you are though. 52 years old. But always active as well. CrossFit, competitive soccer, motocross, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I do know EXACTLY when mine happened.
Physical therapist said I healed as well as an 18-25 year old. Emphasized that a couple times. He was surprised both that it was repaired and that it was healing ok at my age. He emphasized his surprise at the healing a couple times. Could tell he meant it and wasn’t just blowing smoke.
Again you’re younger so maybe it’ll be different but fyi for me the atrophy was a bitch. After a couple months the surgeon gave me the green light to put weight on it…but no way that was happening.
My analogy was “Imagine trying to do a push-up using one finger…not happening…my leg felt very similar to that.” Took probably another 2 months to build back enough strength and muscle to do normal daily activities and probably another 2 months to be relatively normal at CrossFit. I’m still not comfortable with the idea of soccer or anything like that on it. They did give me a special brace to wear for high intensity activities. I used that for racquetball and it was fine but I’m not comfortable with the idea of not having the brace yet. Most of the time I don’t wear the brace at CrossFit but it depends on the activity. If there are a bunch of burpees or a box jumps, etc. I’ll wear it. Squats and bar lifts, etc. it’s fine without it.
All person dependent and especially injury dependent. Even though I had the same repair it might not be quite the same way in which it was torn. Mine was way on the outside and all the way around front to back.

Yeah I can tell a lot of people don't realize the difference from the repair vs a trim. but man that's great to hear you are recovering well! Where I saw you commented on my most recent video so I'm going to go check that out now!

@@crosskantz P.S. It turns out during the meniscus surgeries it was discovered that both ACL’s are partially torn as well. Which probably adds to the hesitancy. Long story but I think one is going to be repaired and the other is 50/50 about whether or not to fix (its partially attached to the PCL) so that one will probably be left as is. TBD.

How do u know if it failed? I had a trim done (first surgery) and then I turns out It was torn again same left knee. This time I had a repair in December 2022 and it’s beeen 5 months and I still struggle to even walk. I have the same bump on my left knee that I had before the surgery repair. I’m scared that it failed and don’t want to end up having it taken out completely. Where u still having trouble like me or I’m i screwed?

@@amoore2165 I’m 48 and fit and active. Tote my meniscus surfing (came down hard on ocean floor) and gave it 6 months but didn’t recover. I had surgery 3 months ago (removed approximately 10 % of medial meniscus). It’s definitely taking longer than I expected to recover. I would say I am better now that I was before the surgery but far from 100% sadly. I have been doing PT and fitness. I can workout pretty normally, I just have not resumed surfing or tennis. If I stand a lot or walk a lot it will get aggregated and swell a little. I think it’s getting better very slowly.

Bucket handle tear of the medial meniscus. Apparently a rare tear but very treatable with a great recovery. Had a partial menisctomy 2 days ago, and my knee already feels so much better.
