    I've never had the snap on Im sure they are wonderful but as a farmer my pliers are an extension of my body, literally lost without them and the Icon's are hands down the best I've ever used! I was a fan of the vise grip one's until the last pair I bought couldn't cut baling wire so needed a new option and boy I'm glad I found the Icons!!

    One good thing about building a set of wrenches is eBay has a lot of singles it time you should be able to finish that proto set. Those proto wrenches are top quality you would need a Mac or snap on to replace them

  • @michaelschlarman7835

    If you don’t like tacky feeling “rubber” grips you should still try them on the professional brands if you can afford them. Which clearly you have a snap on already. They don’t ever really get tacky and hold up to solvents. The only issue I have with them with hard everyday use they will eventually breakdown and gwt beat up. They last a long time but it’s still an issue. You can warranty the grips. The bahco adjustable you have is a good example of that. Same with the wera.

  • @michaelschlarman7835

    In the automotive field slip joints still have a versatile role and many techs use them. I personally recommend the newer snap on needle nose style slip joints for this role if you want only one pair. It’s just more versatile. But own many myself and use them all at times. As a home repair and carpenter as far DIY goes, I don’t see as big of a need for slip joints. Still useful at times but much more limited. I do like the knipex twin grip more for this role.

    I can't be sure, but i think the problem for the guy in the video might be from the distance the pliers wrench handle moves away from him. He's probably no longer applying as much force evenly, and there's probably some let-off that's leading to the rounding issue he's having. If he were to not go attempt to go as far and bring the handles back a bit closer before continuing, he might have better luck with them. That said, he may not like having to do that, so the crescent style may be better for him with how he uses them. Something else to consider: with crescent style wrenches, you may get good grip initially when you tighten them to remove any slop, which is great for a final but of tightening it initial loosening, but you certainly won't be able to get a nut all the way screwed down as fast as they don't slip onto the nut as easily and need to be requested frequently. This isn't a problem with nuts and bolts where you can finger tighten them without much issue, but many nuts and bolts are difficult to completely thread using your fingers. I've gotten meant about a quarter to halfway threaded when it becomes really difficult to turn with my fingers. The pliers wrench would be much quicker for that task. Lastly, I'm pretty sure that so long as you are able to provide constant force to the upper handle, the pliers wrench will clamp with much greater force compared to what you can tighten the crescent style with. And, considering there is usually some discrepancy in the actual size of the nut or bolt head such that there is often slop/play when it comes to using a good box wrench, the powers wrench should be able to have less rounding than box wrenches so long as you aren't trying to turn the nut or bolt to much before releasing and resetting the starting point for applying force

  • @mattsmith6828
    @mattsmith6828 Před 15 dny

    so, the reason those knipex are slipping is because of your momentary release of force. these pliers are designed to immediately release whenever the bottom handle is depressed. whenever you apply a LOT of force top the top handle, there is a tiny amount of FLEX in the bolt and also a TINY bit of compression between the plier wrench and bolt. now, when you stop applying that extreme force to the top handle, those forces are very quickly equalizing, which basically "pops" the handles apart. there are ALWAYS trade-offs. the tradeoffs w/ these knipex are the price, weight, bulk and also needing to squeeze both handles when applying a lot of force.

    I started out with the little Hyper Tough tool bag from Walmart. It only cost me $22. I outgrew it within about 6 months, but I i kept carrying it. I had it about a year, before i discovered that i could carry my tools on my back. I was looking and looking, and i saw a Veto at one of the HVAC supply stores, but i wanted you try a backpack out before i made a real investment. So, i bought a Kobalt backpack from Lowe's, and it has been a real lifesaver. However, I'm learning that no matter how much i want to have all my tools with me everywhere i go, it's impractical. So, i have gone and gotten me a Chevy pickup truck with a lift gate on it, but i need to find a toolbox to go on the back. Nobody told me that working in the trades would result in tool storage issues. Capacity and security seen to be the two main problems. That and not forgetting your tools when you finish a job.

    I hated slip joints for a very long time. Mainly due to sloppy side to side movements on cheap tools that made it very difficult to torque. But I just rediscovered them a couple of months ago and now I really appreciate them. Without them, you need a whole bunch of sockets or wrenches to be able to accommodate different size fasteners. One slip joint will handle all of that.

    Grew up with the Bucket Boss (even still using their branded "gatemouth" tool bag from the late 90s or early 2000s as kind of a general quick fix bag in the house). I think you put the drill in backwards, though...the handle should go the other direction. They also make a little pouch thing with multiple compartments that holds screws and other fasteners designed to go in the bottom of the bucket. I like these because with the bucket you can usually throw some project materials in there with the tools.

    In my younger years, I bought a Kobalt brand ratcheting adjustable wrench. I HATED that tool so much. I kept trying to leave it at customers homes and my helper, at the time, kept putting it back in my carry box because i was so adamant about not leaving tools behind. My rule was if we are missing a tool, we do not leave until we find it. Still my rule today btw. Finally pulled over at the local river and chucked that thing as far as I could 😂. That was before I learned that the stuff at Lowe's was no longer good. I thought Kobalt was the shit because growing up, thats what we bought, but when I was a kid and my Dad was buying these tools they were made by Williams and Armstrong. Had to learn the hard way to 1 buy quality and 2 stay away from gimmicks. Damn thing cost me 40 bucks😂
