This week's bar crossings
First of all I'd like to apologise for the sound on this video - my microphone wasn't plugged in properly and I didn't realise till after. I was going to add music to it but I've had too many copyright strikes with the music so I'll just leave it as is. Hope you enjoy.

I posted this a few videos back, at the end of a video, but I think it deserves its own. This was a very big day some really big sets were rolling through - he came in at the right time when it was a lull, and still got caught on one. It wasn't one of the bigger sets either.

The Moonshadow II heads out with a good swell. It comes across a good set. The bar is running very shallow at the moment which puts on a good show for all the spectators especially at hoki season when the boats are in and out daily. Even when the weather is rough they hang around for high water to cross the bar.

I went out on the first boat in the late 90s from Lyttelton. It was a tidy boat back then, but I see age has caught up with it now.
I’m sure it’s got a few stories to tell, if it could speak😂

On the Resolution 2 where is the helm? I couldn't see anyone in the front of the cabin but there certainly is someone at the port rear station who appears to be steering the vessel from there? Anyone know?
All the ribs showing through the plating on the bow of that first boat. It’s taken a severe pounding over the years, no doubt.

I only put music on when I have microphone issues I love the rawness as well.

That would have been bad for even a serious off shore sailboat. Think of the force of the water to shove a heavy displacement hull around like a plastic bathtub toy.
It would make a good video you need to sail over this way😆😆😆😆
@@westcoastrippers9862It’s not out of the question right now actually. We’ve been discussing a Pacific loop lately. From here (Mexico) the usual route to the Marquesas, but heading up to Japan, back across to The North West US, then back down to Mexico. But who knows, it’s sailing.

Copped this 30% of bar crossings on the east coast or Tasmania and worse if you touched the bottom, a few weren’t so fortunate during the 1980’s.
Just when it looked nice and calm. You can’t turn your back on the sea.

Can't believe there are crew standing on deck whilst this boat is crossing the bar.
That’s exactly where I was every time we crossed the bar , put on a pfd and stand in the galley doorway … I’d much rather go in the water than be trapped in a capsized and sinking boat.
I worked on fishing vessels for years in Aus, and that's precisely where I'd be crossing that bar in that boat.

Those fishing boats seem Way Way underpowered if they have to enter/exit this place all the time. You can have good horsepower AND fuel economy if it’s built and tuned and maintained properly. MORE POWER

Been at sea many times and never had to do this. Rough! I have had to put my seabag on the outside of my bunk to keep from being rolled out of my bunk tho....!

The risk of smashing Windows is all the electronics in the wheelhouse Some of the smaller Boats have just normal glass. I have heard stories about Windows being smashing

Makes it easier to flim. I’ve been down there in some pretty horrible weather I can hardly hold the camera😬
I spent many hrs in the hold of the Mako unloading it and cleaning then filling up with ice in Port Motueka when I was young late 90s glad to see she is still going strong in Greymouth
