Houdini Modeler 2023 for beginners
I've put this beginner tutorial together for other Modelers new to Houdini and coming from more standard direct modeling software. I thought this might help show how Houdini Modeler has simplified the process of more direct modeling inside a procedural system.

That's awesome. Thanks for this.
The best 3dcoat tutorial paintroom I have seen and I have seen a lot tuts. Thank You.
Thank you. I really am planning to make more. I've just been slammed at work. Hope to get some updated videos out soon.
Is this an alternative to the paint room. ? Would I be able to sculpt. Paint retopo and bake without using the paint room?
Yes, but your detail is based on the voxel resolution. Since it's not UV texture-based. When you are ready then you can export it out with the option to decimate with auto UVs all in one. It might not be what you want but I'm hoping this gets better and better, and could be a real way to look dev a model.
One of THE BEST tutorials
Mult-layer?
I could only get 3 layers working. The depth just don't seem to work.
Thank you!
You're welcome! Hope it was helpful
Great Video! Thank you very much.
Beautiful, the workflow is logical and content aware. thank you very much for the clear explanation
Looking at your content. Nice to see you're a 3dcoat user as well. Anyway waiting for more content on both.
Good intro - modeller really makes modelling in Houdini so much better : ) Houdini really draws you in. It has its frustrations, of course, but once you understand 'the Houdini way' it very hard to take any other way : )
Nice tutorial. I am very new to 3DC and never thought such effect can be achieved with layers. May I know how to set the view port background to have the radial gradient like yours?
You can change the gradient from top to bottom or bring in a background image of your own by going to Edit > Preferences> Themes. There are a lot of choices to play with. Hope that helps 👍

This technique is amazing! Thnaks for share with us. Is it possible to make the opposite, paint over, adding displacement using volumetric? I tried and didnt get how to make it work :(
I'll try and put together a video that might be what you are asking for, or something close to it, if I understand your question.
@@industrytuts5272 Oh man, thanks a lot for this kindness share! I meant something like i saw in the 3d coat official channel: they are painting details on elephants foot
this is the future! thanks for show this
great subject for the poly room....nice job.
Can you share alphas?
Super solid video! Also if you hold A and middle mouse click edges, you can do a loop selection
Thanks, I didn't know that. I'll give it a try 🙂👍
Thank you.
🎉🎉
Yeah, no way in hell I'm touching Houdini lol Maya (and maybe 3ds Max and Blender) for the win
Hahhaa. That's cool. You have to be comfortable with the tools you use, so I respect that! I still love modeling in Maya too.
@@industrytuts5272 it's cuz Houdini looks like some alien tech lol too intimidating
I used to think so too. I just took the dive and started playing around with it, and then I realized I didn't have to go too deep into the software like Fx artists do, so even staying fairly high level, I found I could do so much more in it. But to be fair, it did take some getting used to. I'm having a blast with it now though.
@@industrytuts5272 ok, that's good to hear lol might give Houdini a chance someday but by now I'm focusing on Maya and then UE5 cuz I wanna develop games

Not a good tut regarding this
Yeah, the audio got all out of sync, and I couldn't fix it. Definitely a bummer.
Thank you so much for this !
How would you bake it to low poly while keeping the materials?
You could always try to bake it down to a low poly mesh in the retop room.
@@industrytuts5272 I dont know 3d coat. When I bake in substance it doesnt keep material as I know. It just gives the maps like ao, curvature, height and etc. When baked in 3d coat will it keep the texture? That would be very cool. And If it can a tutorial {from you :) }for that would be great and show complete production for such elements for projects.
I may make a video showing this process, but you can try to export from the sculpt room from the file menu Export->Decimate > AutoUV map > Export. This will give a triangulated mesh but with the option to export PBR textures based on your material setup. Hope that helps.
@@industrytuts5272 I will check that. Thank you:)
This is a great tutorial. Thank you.
thank you🎉❤❤
Thanks for these videos as always
Thank you, for watching them, very much appreciated. I'm planning to have more coming soon.

Hello! Are the reference images available anywhere? Cheers!
Honestly, I just did a Lego front and side template view, or something similar in google. You can probably find what I used.
@@industrytuts5272 Cheers!

Thanks glad you liked it. Hope it was helpful.
please make a video on how you achieved this like dual material setup 🙏
I've just created a video for you showing how to achieve this effect. czcams.com/video/Xdd25ESUWho/video.html
Please can i use the smooth tool to smooth out textures in voxel mode please
Have updated to the latest version? That might have been added, but not 100% sure. I'll have to give it a try.
Hi hope you still around using 3d coat, I tried this featur on latest version 2023.35, but whenever i try to use paint tools on scupt mode model disapears same when going to paint room model just vanishes, but when selecting any other tool model appears again in the viewport, is this a bug? or am I doing something wrong?
I got it "fixed" on the view tab i had checked off the option "show voxels in the painting room" so even on the sculpt room when using paint tools the voxel meshes hide because of that
amazing video thanks for uploading this video I was stuck in 3d coat you helped me alot
nice tutorial , how about bevel size ? the more you add resolution the more bevel become smaller ?
That's correct, best to add before adding more resolution if possible.
clascic 3dcoat NO UX Work at all XD
awesome video without your videos I wouldn't be able to retopology in 3d coat
Thanks! That's really great to hear. I'm hoping to get more videos out, just been in crunch mode at work. I'll need to find time though.
yeah keep do the great work, try to make a advanced poly modeling tutorial cuz there aren't a lot in youtube @@industrytuts5272
u r my hero!
Hello, I have seen several UV Mapping videos but no one explains what to do next with the map or how to take it to paint or place a material or texture, thank you.
Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it. I'll be making some new videos on building layered smart materials. Not sure if that's something you'd be interested in but thought I would mention it here 👍
@@industrytuts5272 Thank you for responding, I have been trying to learn how to properly master this software but as many of us know the oficial learning support is very poor and the few paid courses (Udemy) are apart from old ones very focused on modeling, if we add the criticisms received Because of other users, I have more doubts about purchasing them.
These nodes looks like they are in pre beta phase... with standard 3d Coat's Schrodinger's UI approach: For one thing they have bay far the best and most original solution in industry, for other by far THE WORST! Thank you for taking time to make this tutorial - it's bee more then helpful! Excellent work!
I agree with you. I love working with node graphs but only when they allow me to build both simple and complex material, just feels natural, but it becomes a blocker when the setup is not clear and limited by available nodes and not much in the area of documentation. I still struggle to create meaningful node-based materials, so I've kind of stopped using them until they evolve further. I really hope they improve it, and I would like to work in nodes for the smart materials as well, and not just the surface materials. Anyway, that's pretty much my 2 cents. I do love how the developers do push on some of the really cool cutting-edge tools, like volumetric painting (would love to take advantage of more complex usages of nodes in this area as well), and the whole factures system.
@@industrytuts5272 I agree with you - I can just try to imagine yours frustration while trying to solve this riddle without ANY DOCUMENTATION on 3d COat's site, and without proper tutorial, not to mention while great amount of features is buggy. I don't share enthusiasm for 3d Coat any more - My biggest problem with 3d Coat is that they developers are stubborn and really don't care about user needs or suggestions. I've wrote them few times, last mail 3y ago in which I begged them to incorporate some basic changes to UI for voxel sculpting, in order to make whole procedure more user friendly > basically to incorporate some features of box Cutter addon for blender. They were not interested - cause they were focused on other things then- after 2y they finally did this partially - BUT only after majority of artists migrated to blender...
i had a hard time learning this from other videos, but your videos are very well explained keep on rocking thank you
Awesome...! Thanks for your simplistic and insightful way of teaching. Lovely tuts🥰👨🏾🎨!
Wow...! Thanks so much for simplistic and insightful way of teaching. Lovely tuts🥰👨🏾🎨!
3dcoat needs more tutorials creators like you. please make more. Thanks man
Will there be more 3D Coat tutorials? 🙏
Thanks for asking. Yes, I plan on making more, once I free up from work. I'm in a crunch wrapping up some work on a film. But once I'm free, I'll start crafting more videos. Thanks again!
👍👍👍
The sound quality is awful. I mean I literally can hardly hear anything in earphones.
Thanks! This is a very good tutorial!
Thank you so much!
Very rare and rad approach to creating low poly terrains! Could you perhaps show how you create those height maps that you use? They are the crucial part of the process and would be awesome to know about their creation process. Thanks a ton for those amazing tuts sir!
