Dozens of new turfgrass cultivars are released each year but there are years of testing done on each one before they make it to the market. This video breaks down some of the things that are looked at when testing experimental germplasm.

Update on what to look for when buying lawn seed--steer clear of annual ryegrass!
zhlédnutí 2,3KPřed rokem
This is a short video that shows how bad annual ryegrass can look when mixed with perennial ryegrass (light green and large vs dark green and small). I also introduce transitional ryegrasses which are still technically annual ryegrasses, but they have much better turf grass quality characteristics. Going to disagree with you some in that TTTF will work very well in all but the very coldest climates. Also, recognize that if the grass if buried in snow and is in fact in the soil, it gets nowhere near the actual cold air temperatures.

    Do you know anything about bunch grasses? I had some Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia caespitosa) in containers that I had just hardened off for a couple of weeks (they were started indoors), I'm in Zone 8 and they're supposedly hardy in my Zone. Our winter is mostly mild 50s-40s-upper 30s but we had freak cold snap. The plants had been outside for a while and when I saw the forecast I tried just moving them to a sheltered area in the yard (should have planted them). Temps got down to the teens and the potting mix got partially frozen. They seem to have died now, post -thaw. Do you think they're dead for good? I'm thinking yes 😢 because it's in the 50s again now and they're brown.

    • @GrassDoctor
      @GrassDoctor Před rokem

      I think it depends on how much of the lawn is weeds vs grass. If you're mostly weeds, you might consider applying glyphosate over the whole area, killing it all off and then starting from scratch. I have a video on here that details those steps. If you have more turf than weeds, I would focus on thinning out the weed populations and work on the health of the grass. Your crabgrass (depending on where you live) may only have a month or so left to grow until frost takes it out. You can spray it but mature crabgrass usually takes several applications to control it. You'd be better off applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring to make sure it doesn't come back next year. Creeping Charlie can be dinged up pretty good with a 3-way broadleaf herbicide or a product containing triclopyr. These same products will also get white clover but will likely take several apps to actually kill them. For either weed, products containing triclopyr will do a better job for you. There are limitations of how quickly you can seed a lawn after you apply a pesticide so you'd have to read the label of any product you use to see if you can apply it to new seedlings or before seeding. If the lawn is thin I would also try to work some seed into it this fall. Again, check out the renovation video I have to show this. You can improve your lawn a lot by adding good seed but you have to get seed to soil contact or you're not going to get much germination. I know this is a lot. Let me know if you have other specific questions and good luck!

    Thank you so much for the great information! We live on Eastern Long Island, New York, our lawn is full of weeds and tons of dirt patches since we haven’t put anything down the past two years after getting chickens, but we are now in desperate need of doing something and keeping the chickens locked up for a little while is fine with me if we could finally have some grass back! Do you possibly have any specific recommendations of what brand and kind of seed we should get? Any help would be so appreciated, thank you!!

    • @GrassDoctor
      @GrassDoctor Před rokem

      if you're going to clean up the weeds and then get new seed out, you'd probably have much better success than if you don't get the yard prepared. I don't know how little you've done to the area but if your soil is just marginal then fertilizing the lawn each fall can help it stay thick. Also, I like to put out a pre-emergent herbicide each spring to keep the annual weeds out so they don't end up taking over. Those couple of things will pay off for your lawn in spades. In your climate, Rutgers Univ recommends mostly tall fescue because of your hot summers. Having a mix with KY bluegrass and tall fescue also isn't a bad idea as each have strengths and weaknesses. Many of the seed mixes you see at the box stores are't great and you'll usually find much better seed by reaching out to a professional turf store in your area. I always check www.ntep.org and see which grasses do well in my area before I either recommend a variety to someone, or choose a grass for my own lawn. Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck!

    • @GrassDoctor
      @GrassDoctor Před rokem

      Perennial ryegrass is great when it's great but can also get pretty bad. I live in the transition zone of the US and our summers here put a pretty hard beating on PR so that it can either look dog-ugly or die out completely. I know the university of Guelph recommends putting a little PR in with KBG to get quicker coverage but they warn that PR can winterkill pretty badly in areas of ON. I grew up in Sask and we had no PR out there because our winters were so bad. The only concern I'd have for your situation is if you get a bad winter, or a cold snap without much snow coverage--that can often times result in some dead grass. I'm glad it's looking great for you though--thanks for reaching out!
