Why wouldn't you name her. That way no one else has to put up with her.
wish I had a chance to meet you! I’m a line guy for Atlantic @ MCO, hope you enjoyed your time here!
I would’ve fired her ass after her tone and attitude over the phone
Thank you for your service! Great Vids.
welcome to grand strand. I saw my plane on the ramp in ur vid :)
if this is a certain dpe from the upstate area, then i am sorry to hear. Have heard some not so good things and have heard of tons of people failing.
So awesome 😎😎😎😎😎😎
When you say he took control to allow you to the debrief, does that include setting the approach on the GPS and all the related bugs?
Thanks for sharing the info!
Bro lol This story honestly makes no sense. It seems there’s missing info. Also you say you had an issue about this 250xc requirement thing but you decide to do it anyways the day before you checkride? There’s some red flags in your story too so it’s hard to say. One things for sure, you should have accepted her offer of getting you Starbucks. 15 min late? That’s a good thing man, that means she’s less likely to be hard on you because she knew she’s messed up. I think there’s more to this story. Also you probably shouldn’t be doing walk around on a wheelie and talking about this stuff while you’re actually flying and supposed to be paying attention to the outside.
You’re a good man. Sorry about the check-ride but being so concerned about what it cost you and what you could’ve given your family is the best part of the video. I’m glad I watched it. I never had a family of my own but my father was the same way and I’m so grateful for him. I’m glad I realized how much he gave his family before he passed away. He was an airline pilot for Northwest Airlines when he retired. I hope your family watched the video but I’m sure they know. Thanks for sharing. It made my day. Godspeed
Excellent information. Thanks! and congrats on passing the check ride. I'm sorry to hear about your issue with the DPE, how unfortunate. But you got over it and passed and are on your way to the top.
Climbing 2000 ft over your intended altitude is pretty naive. And in places like my area you would be flying right into the bravo airspace above. Must be nice not having airspace’s to fly around.
Carry the urine bags that turn liquid into a solid. They are on Amazon
Are her initials M.P. ?
Love the option of having these e-bikes/scooters but not so much the larger lithium batteries inside the plane w me. Maybe I’m paranoid but you might store the battery in one of those fire bags and in a cushioned container? Or at least have it within arms reach to deal with it?
damn good lookin 150 that is. i grew up with em, so i have a soft spot for 150 =)
Nice job Tommy
I have watched this video a couple of times and I think this is a really bizarre story. I am a long time CFI and find these sorts of videos interesting to watch, as you learn things about how others conduct their business. You never stated what was on the Notice of Disapproval, so I am not clear why you failed the oral, except you were possibly weak on airspace and couldn't satisfy her questions about Basic Med. It also sounds like the DPE didn't think you were qualified to take the ride, based on the 250 NM cross country discussion. It seems like you agreed (on some level) because you went and flew another 250 NM XC at the last minute. As for all of the back and forth with the DPE that was "taking up lots of time", your CFI should have been doing this for you. Your CFI should never have endorsed you, if you weren't qualified and he or she should have been communicating with the DPE to keep the discussions about your qualifications to a minimum and at a professional level. While I always discuss DPE selection and scheduling with my students, I NEVER let the students speak directly to the DPE. The examiners in my area prefer to only deal with the instructors anyhow. Remember, these check rides can only happen when the instructor "recommends" you. I was amazed at the $900 fee, that is well above the national average rate for an instrument ride. Also, some of the other behavior described was a bit weird. The Instrument ACS describes the roles and responsibilities for the Examiner, Instructor and Applicant. I am sorry to hear that you failed, but I suspect that you learned a lot from the situation.
Another great video and all that jazz! Finishing my instrument rating next week and really hoping to make the move to ownership to build time for a year. Got my eye on a couple M20's.
lol. “All that Jazz”
Been watching your Mooney adventures for a while. What would you say are some notable differences in handling between the Mooney and the Cessna you used to fly besides the increase in TAS?
Oh man, too much to mention in a comment but the Mooney is a lot more to do compared to the Cessna. Variable pitch vs fixed, retracts, airspeed, engine management, etc. Glad I learned on the 150 but I love the Mooney.
The Mooney is much ‘tighter’ too. Pushrods vs cables.
@@Tommyflies Thats alot of adjustments to be made but sounds hella cool. How did you learn to fly constant/variable pitch props and how long did it take to get adjusted to that?
@@anthonyhui9891I hired a Mooney specialist to teach me in my plane. Didn’t take long to get used to honestly but I took it slow and was careful not to put myself in situations that were beyond my ability (still am).
I started off in 172’s long ago and watching some of @Tommyflies videos was part of what leaned me towards Mooneys. I’ve had a M20J for about 4 months now and couldn’t be happier! They are fantastic planes! I find them easier to fly overall once you learn the complex part.
What does your oil temp and CHTs look like flying in that heat?
Oil temp isn’t usually an issue (I have an oil cooler) usually tops out at 195ish maybe (but that’s where it’s measured so add some for max temp)… CHT will want to break 400F in the climb which is when i start to take action to cool it down. For a Lycoming, anything below 410 is okay.
Cool, I love my foldable ebike!
Great job. I had a TLS turbo for a few years and it was great to “fly” with you today.
Checkrides in Las Vegas cost 1,000$ brother.
That sucks.
Please, for the rest of us, report her. She should never do this to another pilot. She needs to find another occupation.
11:45 I know right? Like in 2021 I got a 2020 Ford Mustang primum nearly maxed out for $34k out the door $30k for the car... right now their is a fullly restored 1942 Taylorcraft grasshopper scout plane on trade a plane by a polane flipper company for $29k so I could have had that over my car... But seeing I use my car way more it made sense and plane I might rain in and then fly an hour a month? Not so much.... Though when my online creative career takes off...
Unpopular Opinion: Anyone who took a checkride with her knows exactly who this is. In her defense, she followed the ACS line by line and was extremely professional with some of the personality you described. The ride I took with her was more than fair. She was extremely detailed and expected you to know the material. Most people are use to taking cakewalk rides. She's by the book. Just as fair in the plane. The items you missed are in the ACS AOI 1.Task C. Airspace is something you sort of need to know in avaiton(page 4). AOI 1. IR.I.A.K3 (Basic Med)(page 2). You didn't make it past the 4th page of the ACS before you started to struggle. She probably noticed that and started to dig. She hits Basic med hard. All you had to do was pull up the AC which is allowed to do. I honestly don't think you have a leg to stand on. For future and current aviatiors. In life, especially with DPEs, the first impression is the only impression. Why tell her you called the FSDO if you flew what she wanted. All you had to say was. Hey, I wanted you to know I flew the "250 nm" cross country last night to meet the IFR requirements. It might have helped you. But it felt like you were trying to one up her, then tell her she's wrong but you did what she wanted anyway. It wasn't necessary. As an outsider looking in, you may have come off as unintentionally arrogant. She may have felt like you were challenging her. I know it sounds. Pilots are A types. Sometimes saying Yes Sir or Mam. Is more important than being technically correct, especially if they are the gate keepers. Do what you need to do to pass the ride and talk about it AFTER. This was NOTHING compared to South Florida. Try 2k for a ride. And everyone knows Bob will dress you down in the oral and in the plane. Do what you tried with her, with him, and you will have a bad day and the entire building will hear it. You talk about professionalism. Why post this ? This is a really, really small community. Everyone will know who you are. just own it and move on. You're doing yourself a disservice by posting this. EVERYONE KNOWS who this. I bet she's seen it. Will your future employer want to be outted and blasted on CZcams, which could cause lawsuits. You're playing with fire, man. Not trying to be your dad but trying to help. Live your life. The info on the DPE is real. I didn't have any on her. I went in blind and did fine. My ride was FAR from perfect. Some DPEs are different. But I knew who was going to pass or fail with her before they even walked in the room. Come over prepared to every checkride.
You should come again to greenville it has change a lot.
She wasn’t gonna pass you no matter what you did …Sounds like a set up from the get go
Some so called professionals are just that so called ..😮
Tom man you have to report this DPE this is outrageous brother
I did 🙂
Was the instructor Sam L? I need transition training in NC…
It was. If you use him, please let him know I recommended him.🙂
I flew mooneys for 37 yrs great airplane.
WHEN I MOVED FROM A C TO A J IT WAS TOTALY DIFFERENT.
Really well done!
Hey Tom, I also own an E model. I just watched this video this morning and this afternoon I had this exact failure of my prop governor in flight. I knew what had happened immediately because I was primed from your story. Keep up the good work 👊
For the sake of everything holy....we need to know who she is. Checks are already hard enough without dealing with Betty Bipolar
I’m really sorry you had such a bad experience but… you got a great story out of it! 😂 Good luck on the commercial!
You did nothing wrong, except maybe calling her in the first place. By the way you explain it, she has no place in aviation at all...i probably wouldn't let her staple 2 pieces of paper together, because she would say it was a waste of her time 😅
Hey, nice Mooney. Funny, I recognized Eddie as well as your airport... small world! I have a J model based at Owens in Columbia- KCUB since 2005. I fly into Summerville every now & then to visit my pilot friend Hans, who owns a Comanche.
I would have reported her in a split second. You’re more patient than I am, that’s for sure.
sorry the audio is horrible. stopped the video
Is that a tattoo of the Aragon Ballroom sign in Chicago on your arm?
I have a smol scooter that fits my smol plane. I get 6-10mi distance, goes about 12mph, great for those last few miles.
2 door excitement....someone must be flying a piper! lol
You’d want to climb 2500-3000’ for a 14 nautical mile flight that takes about 11 minutes at 80 knots? And wouldn’t your only choices be 2500’ or 3500’, since 3000 is a westbound IFR altitude?
Sounds like some guys just don’t want (or aren’t cut out) to work with female DPEs. Can’t say I’m surprised. Can’t make any decisions until I hear her side of the story. How did the checkride for the other guy go? He passed, right? That’s telling. He was probably ready!? Did you both have the same CFI-I (was it the CFI-I you called your “buddy”)? Maybe you were too confident and rushed it? “6 days to get ready.” When you broke into quoting FAA rules and recent changes, my immediate thought was that you may have come off as trying to “teach your grandmother to suck eggs,” as they say, and/or man-splaining stuff to her. Would have been easier to just let her do her job and pass you based on the standards as she knows them, or pass on her and wait for another DPE. Then you argued with her about the time, then didn’t get enough sleep, and still took a stressful exam. And you never told her about an email to expect from the FSDO, until the exam, so she needed to call timeout to analyze that, which caused additional delays. Didn’t know what a TRSA is? That’s PPL level stuff, my man. Hell, it’s on the Part 107 exam! And you didn’t know about BasicMed? It sounds like in her opinion you didn’t know as much as you should at this point in your training. And you admitted to blanking on quite a few questions she asked. You seem to be focusing on “nothing to do with flying” and “not IFR questions.” Maybe she was making a point about you not blocking off the room, if it’s as important and stressful as you say. Also sounds like you were digging in the FAR way too often for things she felt you should know by this point. Can’t say she’s wrong, based just on the examples you gave. Just my personal opinion on it based on what you said and the fact that you published a 30 minute rant about her, but are calling her unprofessional. While you’re flying, quite distracted and frustrated, and talking to a camera. Advising others if the lessons you learned (?) shouldn’t take more than about 5 minutes. I’d say you need to rethink your attitude about this, and accept personal responsibility. Accountability is an important skill and trait to have for a pilot. Do you have any proof she told people you failed? Maybe they assumed you failed since they didn’t see you running around celebrating and posting your success on social media? Based on your story, I’d give her an A-, and you a C-.
I took a ride with her, and I felt exactly what you described. Entitlement. The guys that came prepared. Passed. The ones that didn't. Failed.
You def have a professional responsibility to yourself, other pilots, other DPE’s, the FAA and the entire aviation community to report bad actors, be they pilots, FBO’s, ATC’s or DPE’s.
Can you please provide the link for audio splitter too? I really cant find it
