Our family farm is located not far from the Rock Springs church. That church building was moved sometime in the 80's, It used to be in front of and across the creek from my uncles house, which used to be the Rock Springs Hollow school, he converted it to his house when I was probably 8 years old or so, maybe 1966-ish. When I was a kid my uncle would take us to the little grocery store that was in Thebes then. Up on the hill in Thebes is a Baptist Church, I went to a lot of services there. We used to go and play in the creek at Rock Springs, you should go there it's very pretty, it's only a few miles from the Thebes bridge. I've lived in Algonquin Il now for 40 years, having moved from Anna IL to go to college in Chicago in 1976 but much of my family remains in Southern IL.

In addition to the herds of bison, there's a large herd of wild longhorn cattle, and a prairie dog town! To the east is Mount Scott, I think the second tallest mountain in the state, which you can drive up with a small parking area at the top. If you live in OKC it's just an hour and a half drive. And yeah, there's so many people here that have never been much less even heard of it.

I was excited to stumble onto this video as I was just talking with my mother about taking her to visit there again soon. I can provide some history on this cave and the dam built there. My mother lived on that land with her family in the decades prior to WW2. If you walk up to the top of that hill on the north side, that's where my grandfather built the Conner family home. He and his brother farmed that land on the Current River branch nearby. Eugene Conner and my grandmother Nellie raised 14 children there; my mother and one of her sisters are still living in West Plains, MO west of that area now. Her older brothers built that dam and power station (I don't know the correct terminology for that) to pump water up the hill to the house. The family relocated from there in the mid 1940's. The concrete dam that is left at the mouth of the cave isn't really visually appealing, I get that. But, it's definitely a neat perspective to think about someone owning this land and making it work for their needs at that time, in such a remote area of Missouri. I'm really excited to share this with my now 94 year old mother, she'll really appreciate this video! Love it, thank you!

The Ohio River, as we know it, did not exist before the last ice age. What was the ancestral Ohio River actually flowed Northeast to where Pittsburgh is now located, where it joined the Monongahela River. The Mon flowed north, up what is now the Beaver River Valley and emptied into the St. Lawrence River, as Lake Erie did not exist either at that time. The glaciation blocked the northern flow of the Mon, creating a giant lake that covered much of Northern West Virginia and Southwestern PA. Where Pittsburgh is now was under 500 feet of water. The water kept backing up the ancestral Ohio River until it breached lower hills causing the flow to reverse from Northeast to the current Southwest direction. Geologists think as the lower hills were breached, it caused a very quick draining of "Lake Monongahela" and the current Monongahela, Allegheny. and Ohio River Valleys were cut down through the rock very quickly due to the massive volume of water being released. The Snake River Canyon out west was also formed in the same quick way.

I found this in the Audubon Reader and John James Audubon heading downriver in 1810 on the Ohio to where the Mississippi River comes in. He talks about getting word that the Mississippi was frozen over (it was December) so he stops at where the Cache River comes into the Ohio and how a tribe of 50 Shawnee's we camped on its bank. Audubon states they: "...had moreover chose this spot for an encampment, to reap the benefit of the good harvest of pecan nuts; and to hunt the innumerable dear, BEARS, and raccoons ..." Very interesting to say the least!
