Choosing A Motorcycle to Restore
zhlédnutí 110Před rokem
Sorry for the faint sound on this one, the rest are better! - So you'd like to restore a motorcycle - Here are some of my thoughts on things to look for when you buy one.
My Bike Build Concept - 1974 DT250
zhlédnutí 586Před rokem
I talk about what I have in mind for the end result of this build. It's not a restoration, but more of a resto-mod that looks like a vintage moto-crosser, but will still be "street legal"
The Tear Down - 1974 DT250

Taking apart my 1974 Yamaha DT250 in preparation for the rebuild.
Rear Wheel, Sprocket, and New Tires

Working on the wheels for my 1974 Yamaha DT250 motorcycle. Laugh at me nerd-ing out on the design of a sprocket! A big thanks to Violet, who did most of the cleaning and polishing on these wheels!
Deleting the premix oil pump - 1974 DT250
zhlédnutí 2,9KPřed rokem
Removing the premix pump from my 1974 Yamaha DT25 motorcycle. This was a common modification to save weight back in the 1970s. Also found a little surprise when I got the engine cleaned up
Cleaning up the Fuel Tank - 1974 DT250

Cleaning up the inside and outsides of my 1974 Yamaha DT250 fuel tank.
Trying out a product that removes RUST

Trying out some EvapoRust - let see if we get good results on the 1974 Yamaha DT250 parts
Painting the Frame & Fenders - 1974 DT250
zhlédnutí 59Před rokem
Slapping some spray paint on my 1974 Yamaha DT250. This is a difference between a fancy resto and what I call a "Rattle Can Restoration", on this bike I'm just going for quick, reasonably clean, and rideable.
Replacing the Seat Foam and Cover - 1974 DT250
zhlédnutí 130Před rokem
Found a great aftermarket foam and cover on ebay. A fairly tricky process but it came out great!
Reassembly - and then I go racing! 1974 DT250
zhlédnutí 362Před rokem
Finally time to put it back together! Just in time (like literally the night before) to try my first vintage motocross race at Dino Daze in WA with my 1974 Yamaha DT250. My first time on a track - the bike had a few issue but did fine eventually and I had a blast riding with the VME crew from Seattle. Would definitely do this event again, very low-key and welcoming to newcomers like me.
Installing a Street legal Lighting Kit - 1974 DT250
zhlédnutí 148Před rokem
Got this great kit from streetohv.com and got it installed on my 1974 Yamaha DT250. Uses a tiny dedicated 12v lithium battery and has a headlight, brake light, and turn indicators. Worked out great and so much better than trying to upgrade the bikes original 6 volt system.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. I have a 1975 DT250 that needs a new seat. Very insightful.
Mistake!!!on racing bikes delete pump cable and set pump on lowest setting . On long downhills compression braking the engine gets no fuel or oil and can seize.. I set up my Dt2 with a Rt1 360 crank . Really pulled out of corners but it needed a bigger carb . Don't be tempted to go bigger than a 34 mm carb on that 250 .
Hello friend, a pleasure, I have a 250 but I don't know how to assemble the electricity, that is, the coils, would you help me?
Do you have a link to the block off plate you ordered? I’m having trouble finding the correct one. Thanks
Just got the same bike this series will help me so much
What is the oil ratio of the engine
I use 40 to 1, I’ve heard others use 30:1, or 50:1, so it’s not critical to be exact but something in that range
Did you change anything on the carb.
@@bmf3634 nope, it’s all I think factory spec and seems to work fine, of course I rebuilt it but no changes so really just cleaning it out.
The differences are more substantial than you realise. As an example, the MX had longer travel forks and light weight front wheel, bigger air box, different porting and an expansion chamber. You would get a far better bike going the other way; start with the MX, slot in the DT bottom end, transfer the MX barrel, carb etc.
Sure sounds like a fun project and I as well love 1970's dirt bikes ! Those 70's bikes just got a good feel and look about them that has not changed . We picked up a 1978 Suzuki PE 175 this fall and really enjoy the bike and the memories ! czcams.com/video/Su8x9k1eGV4/video.html
Oh , one more thing , I think you have an early ‘75 model as the ‘74’s as I remember them had low mount front fenders, a different type exhaust pipe and were in Green or Purple ( if my memory is still functional)😆😏. Have fun !!
Wow had never heard about the purple ones had to go look those up! The 1970s had such fun colors 👍
I remember going to our local Yamaha dealership and at 14 years old in 1974 buying a “ Mini -Enduro “ 60cc to start out my motorcycle riding career . I really wanted one of the new 125 cc or 250 cc DT’s like yours , but at only about 5foot tall and with a mom who was sure I was gonna kill myself on a motorcycle ,that little Yamaha I bought was all I was gonna get that day . At 62-1/2 now I’m still actively riding motorcycles ( I have a ‘77 RD -400 I bought my senior year in high school, my ‘85 Tri-Z 250 3 wheeler , my ‘99 R-6 600 , & my ‘99 WR-400 Dual sport with full street legal kit from Baja designs.) Wish I still had that old Mini -Enduro & my ‘81 YZ-125 Water cooled , first year from Yamaha for my collection, but it was not to be . Oh well , guess you could still call me a Yamaha guy for life anyway. Enjoyed your video . Ride safe man , and enjoy your bike as well .🤞😊
Just a heads up…if you are planning on reusing that petcock, the vinegar will eat away at that metal as well ruining it. I made that mistake on an XL500 I did over the summer lol. I have been using an aluminum plate to block the opening when soaking the vinegar.
Nice presentation! I’ve got a couple DTs on my channel that might help you when you begin. I’ll be watching yours to see the progress as well!
@@radmark1592 thank you! I didnt realize until after I watched your first video that you had the others done already lol. once you get a formula down for how you present and edit, it gets easier. I've had my channel going for almost a year now and the editing part is the most time consuming still, but the more you do it, the easier it gets! keep it up!
