I lived in the SF Bay Area in 1979, and KSAN radio would play punk/new wave back then. This song blew me away when I first heard it, as it still does today.

One of the best bands I ever saw- randomly enough- the Blockheads in a silly provincial music fest (Maldon in the UK). 2010 or so (ish!), 2 keyboards with full Hamond rotaries on. Most people had left- got to stand at the front on my own & own the sound- no Ian obviously, but what, what, what a band, what a sound. ID probably one of the best songwriters of all time. The Blockheads- boy they still rocked back then.

Years ago, I had a neighbor (Benny Roybal) who walked similar to Ian (see live interview with Dury walking from stage to chair or seat) Immediately I knew that Ian had polio, as our beloved neighbor Bennie did (toppled sideways nearly falling down) less the benefit? of a cane or crutch. Now I realize that they were merely fighting back - for some kind of dignity. I have nothing but the utmost respect for any one overcoming such obstacles... Their way. I am going to listen to Paul Anka now. .. My Way. Remembering them fondly and respectfully.

I always loved the steady beat on this. Great playing from Charley on drums and Norman on bass!! Is that a drum machine, can be heard at 1:15 and during the sax solo (and later on). Great sound!! There's a live video that's a bit faster and even better than the recorded version, and the bass can be heard in front of everything. Awesome!!

I loved the song as a kid lots of the boys in school would sing it junior ,but I remember being scared of Ian when seeing him perform on the TV 🤔🤗🤗....I wished I could of watched the blockheads live and I should of but it until these bands have gone that you realise just how brilliant they are/were and Ian showing polio doesn't been the end of dreams...by the way me and most of my little school friends found out what rhythm stick meant from our older brothers🤗😆😆....liked Ian with his martialing stick (military cane)....

I was today yesrs old when i found out Ian had polio. As a kid in the 70s and 80s I did not know he had polio.
