    At 00:08:14, I made a double land drop. It's been a while since recording but if I had to guess I was trying to figure out how to play around 3 mana Thalia and just forgot I had already played a land. Fortunately, I lost that game so it did not affect the outcome. Sorry all!

  • @juhalahdenoja2245
    @juhalahdenoja2245 Před 14 dny

    11:56 Was the opponent technically supposed to shuffle the entire library? Also, what's your take on the non-bo between blood moon and path to exile?

    • @Cyclopes8Highlander
      @Cyclopes8Highlander Před 14 dny

      Yes, they were. We both missed it during the game. It has been a long time since I've played Aven Mindcensor (and a lot of other white hatebears) so I was not as vigilant about keeping track of my hate effects as I should have been, and that's on me. As far as Path and Blood Moon: most decks play very few basic lands these days, and Path is just so strong that it's worth the tension with Blood Moon. In my experience, relying on Blood Moon as a hard lock piece is usually not very effective. People will often start fetching basics when they know you run Moons/PoP. Locking away most of your opponent's mana sources is usually good enough for a big tempo swing, and if you happen to get all of their mana sources, that's just a nice bonus. Basically, I think decks can tolerate a certain amount of non-bos for the sake of power/efficiency - it's pretty rare to see any pair of cards in the same game in 100-card singleton as it is, so it's not worth it to dilute the removal suite just for the sake of the moons.

    This was a really awesome watch. I loved how thorough the deck analysis was for each list. Talking about the pillar cards that lists were leveraging for strategies was really informative. Especially in how that effected their point spreads. As someone who's still newer to this format its hard to find content this thorough and informative.

    The runback! Hope you've got some time to brew again soon, sucks when time is so stressfully limited. I'm wondering -- since you're already playing on colour fetches for the battlecry surfer and so rarely seem to do anything proactive on turn 1 -- might it be worthwhile to include even just one surveil land?

    • @Cyclopes8Highlander
      @Cyclopes8Highlander Před měsícem

      It's certainly possible. I tend to avoid tapped lands as much as I can, especially since there's a lot of value in blanking Wasteland most of the time, but I definitely do feel the lack of a surveil. The deck is in kind of a rough spot right now, MH3 was not kind for red with the printing of numerous beefy and/or lifelinking threats, and I haven't had the time to figure out how to adjust properly.

  • @nemmielicious

    Sweet list 🙂I'm curious about a couple of things! - I would probably be playing Lily of the Veil, Hostile Investigator, Collective Brutality over cards like Wrench Mind & Go Blank. Do you just value the 2 for 1 over the card quality in these cases? - The green splash, is that just for answering arts & enchs? Wondering if we're already splashing green maybe we should go for a Goyf with all this discard to grow it, or a Witherbloom Apprentice since we're already on Chain of Smog - I'd also probably be on at least a few one drops, like an Esper Sentinel and a Mom. I know you're leaning midrange not aggro, but not even half our one mana plays are proactive. Anyways, happy to get some Gx mid gameplay, and good luck with grad school 😊

    • @Cyclopes8Highlander
      @Cyclopes8Highlander Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks! I'm happy to answer. - Hostile Investigator felt extremely mediocre in goldfishing as the bar for 4 drops is insanely high. It's probably better than Grief on the hardcast, but Grief has the option of being an emergency discard valve, but if you wanted to go bigger it would be one of the first cards I would look at. Lili of the Veil is another viable option, but I was trying to avoid any effects that were symmetrical. Collective Brutality is a very bad card outside of combo decks in my experience. It's inefficient, misses on hand attack a decent amount of time, and doesn't kill things you want 2 drop removal to kill. It's also not card advantage. Wrench Mind and Go Blank are wacky looking cards but are 2 for 1s. Normally I don't consider them good enough, but I wanted to test out this idea and they turned out to be not as bad as expected. - The green splash gives some nice removal (Decay/Trophy), as well as engines in the form of cards like Grist, Glissa, Dreadknight, and Sentinel. It also gives a real incentive to play with Moxen over having to warp the deck to accomodate Sol mana. I do think Tarmogoyf is something that probably should be in the deck, I was just too eager to try out other 2 drops that I haven't gotten to play with in a while. Witherbloom Apprentice is too mediocre imo and the odds of actually assembling the combo are extremely slim - if I wanted a value permanent that could accidentally go infinite, I would look towards Sedgemoor Witch first. Chain of Smog is just another 2 for 1 like Wrench Mind/Go Blank. - Esper Sentinel is a low-impact card in Canadian Highlander, and I would avoid putting it in 95% of decks. You can add Mother/Giver of Runes, but you need to make cuts somewhere, and they are not highly impactful cards on their own. Many keepable hands in this deck only feature 1-2 creatures, which means if one of them is Mother/Giver, you effectively have no threats. There's also the issue that the deck is heavily black, and playing extra non-black 1 drops has a tendency to strain the manabase. - I do agree that the deck could use some slimming down, but I think I'd err towards more 2 drops, as 1 drops lose effectiveness as the game drags on, and by the nature of this deck, the game tends to drag on. I also have noticed that many decks try to be proactive on 1, which means that being reactive on 1 lets you throw a speed bump into their curve to slow the pace of the game to allow a grindier build to take over. Maybe that theory wont hold true over time, but it is one of the ideas that I built the deck around. I hope that answered your questions, and if you have more, feel free to ask. I'm going to be uploading another video with this deck later today with a few changes made to it. Enjoy!

    • @nemmielicious
      @nemmielicious Před 2 měsíci

      @@Cyclopes8Highlander Thanks a lot for the in depth answer, that all makes a lot of sense! Collective brutality and hostile investigator basically never make the cut for me either, I was just curious about them since the deck is explicitly discard themed. Super interesting that sth like Wrench Mind performs well, I should give that a spin myself as a serial Jund spammer. Green splash also makes sense with your explanation, that's super interesting that you would otherwise feel obliged to run sol mana -- I play eurolander so this isn't a question on my mind, but I would have thought mox mox strip tainted and maybe jitte is a fine spread. Definitely going to watch the cockatrice vid as well, thanks 😊

    I love this video. I've been trying to combat my meta that is a mix of combo and proactive midrange with one or two DnT players thrown in. Any thoughts?

    • @Cyclopes8Highlander
      @Cyclopes8Highlander Před 3 měsíci

      Depends on what your exact meta composition is, but that sounds like a good place for some type of blue deck. You can tech towards winning the aggro/midrange matchups via sweepers, or more towards the combo decks with more restrictive counter spells (like Dovin's Veto) and possibly hand attack. You also could look to join in on the combo plan yourself - currently, artifact combo is pretty well positioned for being able to find some silver bullets and have a strong grind plan that can outmuscle many fair decks. Hard to say anything else without more information, but that seems like a good spot to start based on your description. If you want more ideas or help tuning a deck, I highly recommend joining the Canadian Highlander Discord, if you haven't already. There are a lot of active members there from a variety of metas with a many unique perspectives that are often very willing to help with deck building. The link to the Discord is in the video description. Hope that helps!

    Clarifications and Corrections (Will Update as Needed): - The Speed categories should really be Fast (<= turn 4 average goldfish speed), Medium (> 4 but <=6 average goldfish speed) and Slow (>6 average goldfish speed). This gives a little more granularity and is useful because there are a number of combo decks that average a turn 4.x goldfish which is less than turn 5 but still in the Medium speed category, as most of the fast combo decks in the format average a turn 3.x. - How fast your deck is partially determined by the combo itself (resources needed, ease of finding pieces) but is also determined by the shell you put the combo into. For example, Scapeshift needs a lot of resources and so naturally fits into a Slow control/combo variant, but there are versions of Scapeshift in the past that have used cards like Nature's Lore and Skyshroud Claim to aim for turn 4-5 kills. When evaluating the speed of a shell as a whole, there's a difference between the maximum speed at which you can get a combo online versus a realistic speed in which you can get a combo online. When in doubt, look at your average goldfish speed rather than your best goldfish speed. Ultimately, speed is mostly an indicator of play patterns you want to employ when playing a combo deck and are not meant to be taken as immutable breakpoints. - I've been informed that Slushie is more likely a "Slow" speed combo deck rather than a "Medium" speed combo deck.

    Love this video. I'm not super new to the format but I basically only know my decks. Going to watch this entire vid over a few days to become the highlander guy at my LGS haha

    Thanks so much for this! Worth calling out for everyone because I was about to do this myself - Cyclopes8 sorted all the decks across all archetypes into the tiers they assigned in the second tab of the Google Spreadsheet 🙌🙌🙌

    There were some technical difficulties in setting up the stream, partially because I have not streamed in years and partially because we decided to make this a stream at sort of the last minute. I've edited out most of the issues and there should be no missing gameplay, but if the screen is black, that is why. Huge thanks to solemnstorm for hosting and being flexible, and to Harju, JadedTrekkie, Purukogi, and Vaaste for helping me with commentary. Enjoy!
