I want to share some of my old 78s shellac records, playing international music (different artists and orchestras) mostly of the thirties and fourties authentically on original gramophones. I live in Bavaria, Germany.
"How About You?" - Judy Garland (1941)
Judy Garland (vocal) with Orchestra under direction of David Rose. Judy was 19 years old when she made this recording on October 24th, 1941. The song was written by Burton Lane (music) and Ralph Freed (text) for the MGM Musical-Picture "Babes on Broadway" (1942), starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney and it became a very popular Jazz Standard the following years.

1:36 "And Franklin Roosevelt's looks give me a thrill." I think we can safely accredit this to the propaganda department. The record was released in November, the movie premiered on December 3rd, 1941, only for days prior to Pearl Harbor and the attack that shocked a whole nation but boosted FDR's popularity which had been waning, due to the huge failure that the New Deal really was. Even so, Frank Sinatra too was thrilled by his looks but later changed his eye to Jimmy Durante, in the famous recording with Nelson Riddle. When Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby did the song on their _Fany Meeting You Here_ album, Rosie was thrilled by Frank Sinatra's looks, as was Joni James a year later. In the recording with the Hi-Lo's she named Nelson Riddle, who was her real-life lover. In 1957, Anthony Perkins was smitten with Sophia Loren (as was quasi every member of the male species). Annie Ross preferred Billy Eckstine, Bobby Darin by JFK (another president). Joe Pesci gets a thrill from Oprah Winfrey's smile, Sylvia Syms is thrilled by Robert Redford's looks, Morgana King by Michael Jackson's, Jack Sheldon by Theresa Russell's. On one of her last albums, Rosemary Clooney picked up the song again in a duet with Barry Manilow, accompanied by the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of trombonist Grover Mitchell, and she was logically thrilled by the Basie Orchestra. Last but not least, I want to remind you of Brazil's cult singer and pianist Dick Farney, who is the only singer I know of who actually honored his spouse. "And Mrs. Farney's looks give me a thrill." Well, isn't that nice? One of the great list songs, open for improvisation and all kinds of updates as the thrilling contemporaries indicate. No one, though, sang _How About You?_ with the same sincerity and youthful innocence as sweet, incomparable Judy.

Ehrlich gesagt, sind mir solche Kinderstimmen zuwider, und Durelles ist schon ziemlich grotesk. Das Radio Guide Cover mit ihrem Antlitz ist aber ganz reizend. Ich liebe diese Illustrationen der damaligen Zeit, ein warmer, einnehmender, einfach _wohliger_ Stil. Bob Todd hat in seiner _Pax41 Music Time Machine_ auch die herrlichsten Bilder, daß man aus dem Schauen gar nicht mehr herauskommt. Den Rodgers & Hart Standard habe ich übrigens zum allerersten Mal durch Josephine Baker kennengelernt, _C'est un nid charmant._ Charmant ist übrigens auch Whitemans Einleitung, mit dem Frage- und Antwortspiel der Holzbläser; sie versprüht eine weltentrückte Atmosphäre, wie es sich für ein Liebesnest bzw. ein romantisches Hotel ja auch gehört.
Durelles Stimme war für mich auch gewöhnungsbedürftig! 😜 Aber mit der wunderbar von Dir beschriebenen Orchesterbegleitung ist es doch eine charmante Aufnahme dieses schönen Songs von Rogers und Hart! 🎶👍😃 Freut mich, dass Dir die Illustration gefallen hat, ich findecsie auch hanz reizend! I always loved this song, but my favourite version was recorded by Henry Hall. This is a close second. I always loved the sound of Durelle’s voice as well!

Bei Oberammergau denke ich als erstes an _Passion;_ und diese ist bei dir ja auch in jedem Video spürbar, ob im Zimmer oder auf dem Balkon.
