Just got the S-1. Need to invest in the Volca. I assume your red cable is into a DAW via your audio interface
6 minute of your annoying voice.
Stop talking
Now I need one.
Nice! If you are going to get it, you can consider using my affiliate link, it would help me a lot: amzn.to/3zoNNzp Cheers!
8:08 Wow!!!!
I beg you, please add actual keys. Even just regular keyswitches. Fuck this touchpad shit.
You can always use an external midi keyboard. I suppose these kind of keyboard are used to keep the price lower.
Really nice, and "We are here for the fun, not for making sense" is now my favourite explanation for everything. Thanks for the video.
😆
TUTORIAL - Activate the Roland S-1's arpeggiator and choose the arpeggio type you prefer. - No sequencer needed: to engage the arpeggiator, activate the Hold button, then on the keyboard push all the notes you want to play at once. - I used the Filter LFO to create an evolving effect (to make it quicker I started with a presets that comes with one of the default patterns, but you can easily program your own sound). - You can tweak the Filter and the Effects knobs in real time to create sound variations. - On the Volca FM I pre-recorded a simple pattern in the internal sequencer, using the preset "Glassbell". - I didn't sync the two units because I wanted the two patterns to interact in an unpredictable way. - I used the transpose slider on the FM to create melodic variations in real time. - In the final part I messed up with the tempo by slowing down both units at different pace.
Great for someone like wanting to experiment with this type of equipment. Thank you
Great
Like everyone has said, very inspiring, especially to be sharing how to make it work in that etherial ambient manner. Wow. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind feedback
For fifty bucks, I think it's pretty cool. Great demo!
Nice sounds & vibe ✌🏼
These babies are like super Volcas, Korg should take note of some of these refinements and enhancements to the portable synth concept.
I think the s-1 brings the concept of portable synth to a new level. The included battery is a game changer too and to me it makes a great difference!
lovely!
People call this a toy. Legendary electronic pioneers Kraftwerk used toys, such as the kid centric Mattel Beegees, Casio VL-1, Speak n spell, Stylophone and the wonderfully lo-fi Optigan.
Thank you for the reminder. Times have changed, but still interesting to think about that.
@@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic Most people didn't use toys back then either. It's an idea- of course they used Minimoogs and other pro gear as well.
Loved it ! Returned the S-1 for the JT-4000 and very happy with it using with an Ipad setup. The audio over USB on the S-1 was driving me crazy
what was the issue with USB audio on S1 ?
They are very different beasts in my opinion. I didn't understand your issue. Maybe you could give the S-1 another chance if you check out this video: czcams.com/video/VHT5iIjnigo/video.htmlsi=KhD_r_D8_8tZ1iWs . Cheers!
@@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic Agreed - the S-1 is phenomenal.
The problem may have been me and my lack of patience. My setup is Ipad Pro running AUM thru Scarlett audio interface to mixer. The probem is…Ipad/AUM doesn’t handle 2 USB interfaces very well. There may be work arounds but it was driving me crazy setting which USB Ipad/AUM was using. I’ve been watching and enjoying your video’s. Hope this clarifies things
@@john678 I understand, the s-1 has also a regular audio output though. Thank you for the support!
The Roland S-1 beats it for sure! 😊
$200 vs $50. No comparison. I can’t believe the JT doesn’t take batteries! That’s already a con 😑
@@jjbing3 Just plug it into a small power bank. I'd prefer an inbuilt battery too, or AAs, but it's not a big deal really?!
That's quite true, but they are in differente leagues, don't you think? Maybe you'll enjoy my video about the S-1 then: czcams.com/video/VHT5iIjnigo/video.htmlsi=KhD_r_D8_8tZ1iWs
I'll never sell my S-1. One day, I'll have to open it, and replace it's cell. Not difficult.
@@jjbing3 Like they say “You get what you pay for.”
I've just got mine. All I've done so far is to update the software, but when I get home tomorrow, I'm having a play around with it!
This is so freakin awesome! I am just diving into the materia and got some questions. Is the Zoom MS-70 CDR connected into an Audio Interface, what are the cables on the left side of the MS-70? Sorry for those stupid questions, but i am a total beginner!
Yes it goes to pc audio interface for recording. Good luck with your new beginning! Cheers
I use whatever..The only thing is, unless you are sing something like Reaktor/CSound/MAX/PD/ SuperCollider/Macaw,etc, that's open ended, you will stay inside the box.I just do not fall into the SCAM that you need new gear and software. A 5 year old computer can make all the music 95% of people make.
I have a 11 years old laptop and only budget pocket synths 😊
Please dont cut the video, we loose track of the explanation
Sorry I tried to keep only the important parts otherwise it gets to long and boring. If something is not clear you can ask me.
I make most of my music using volca keys, totally in love with this synth from day 1.
Definitely an evergreen
Just sent my one back to the shop. It sounds great, yes !! But the UI is not like using an analogue synth with a knob per function. For $%^& sake, I work in Serum ( A virtual synth) and it's 10 times easier to program than the S1, and I loath programming virtual synths. This got to me after a while, and I thought, ok this is not a synth I enjoy programming at all. But if you're into hidden functions and menu diving, go for it, it really has amazingly good sound and FX. If you're thinking I'm some old fart who doesn't know how to even plug in a synth, I built my first Moog clone at 16, and owned quite a few well known synths like Juno's Yamaha DX7, Ensoniq, and recently a Hydrasynth deluxe (which is totally digital and has menus - But has a very intuitive workflow which I love). The S1 is totally digital, and if you're aiming for deep powerful bass, good luck with that. I have a Behringer D and it utterly destroys the S1 as a bass synth. I tried substituting the S1 for the D part, in a piece ambient music, and basically the S1 bass got lost somewhere in the mix. It doesn't have the raw smooth power of an analogue synth, and ends up sounding very raspy, even with the sub oscillator on. But for the immediate Wow factor the S1 destroys the D because of the great effects engine. It it's a matter of taste, and function in the end. Have fun making music, and at least try the S1 out, you might end up loving it.
Thank you for the accurate feedback. I agree that bass is not the strongest point of the S-1. I think that it works great with mid range sounds, and if you need fat deep basses you have to look somewhere else, as you do. I don't feel like it's too unfriendly to program, but i guess that's kind of subjective. Anyway, of course as any other machine, it has strong and weak sides, but it's surprising to me how much you con do with just one synth alone. Cheers!
Tiz a strong synth ever, isn't it?
it's surprising how much you can do with just one synth alone!
@@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic Yeah right?
Beautiful! You have truly demonstrated the S-1 can be a fantastic ambient machine!
1 word: FREEDOM!
I would have gone with 'Simplicity' ....... but then I might be considered a Luddite.
@@ralphhathaway-coley5460 that works too. I just enjoy not being focused on a DAW piano roll.
Thank you!
Music starts at 5:06
It is undoubtedly a good synth in the budget range and I use it constantly in my music, but it has a serious flaw: even though I create a sequence with the metronome, it doesn't keep time: it plays the notes late. I also downloaded the machine update files from the Korg website without appreciable results.
Did you make sure you deactivated the flux function?
Thank you for the advice, but I had already deactivated the flux function without obtaining any improvements. Unfortunately, the problem remains
Awesome vibe. My ears thank you.
Such a great soundscape! Really getting some great sonic potential out of a minimalist setup here! Just internal reverbs? or are you using any external processing in addition?
Thank you! Besides the internal reverb there is a gentle post processing in Ableton live
Crazy Tangerine Dream
wow
An impressive jam. 👍👍
As someone who is just beginning his musical journey, videos like this are so incredibly inspiring. Please... keep creating content like this.
Thank you , I'll try to keep up with more inspiring videos!
Add a beat and you have a beat scape. Is there rhythm beats in those synths?
No but you could easily connect a drum machine
ok so how does this work? valhalla into monotron duo, duo into monotron delay, and delay into whatever sound capture you're using? just trying to figure out where Valhalla fits in all of this. i have all 3 monotrons and wanna know how i can add more stuff to a noise session
Hi. The Valhalla is at the end of the chain so it affects the whole mix. I used Ableton live to record. One monotron goes inside the other one an there is only one output
@@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic that makes sense -- one more thing tho, you're using an interface to get the sound from the linked monotrons into ableton live? an interface is the one thing i am missing but am wondering if there's a way around that.
@@HannaManful yes i used an audio interface. You definitely need one to capture good audio. There are plenty of options with a good quality/price ratio. Audient is my current choice. Make sure you choose one with a stereo input .
Great stuff! Mind me asking how you connect them to the pc and record it?
The FM goes into the mix in of the s-1. Then the main output goes into the audio interface connected to the pc. I used Ableton live to record. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing the tutorial/setup notes in the description!
The FM tone is evoking some classic Kitaro for me.
I also had the same feeling. I'm surprised no one noticed before 😊
Love it! Thank you.
❤❤❤
Your battery be like 😵💫
But I made it! 😅
This was fun
a visitor at home had one, hooked him up to my stereo and was so impressive for such a small device...was like a mini rave happening in my lounge! but you have shown me the mellow side of it and i thank you greatly
The size can be misleading. This is a real synth, very capable and versatile! Thanks for the feedback
Nice!
Nice sound, but I’d prefer a little more variation in 5mn of the same patterns - can you randomise at all? or maybe simply switch patterns?
Yes of course it would be possible to create variations in different ways, like transposition, or simply pushing different notes. Pattern change doesn't apply here because I'm not using the sequencer. I understand your point. The variations here are not melodic but in the interaction between the two patterns and timbre of the sound. Of course it's just one possible approach of many. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers
@@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic a jam is a jam is a jam. sounds nice tho. with the S1 I find even with arps you can use shuffle and delay to achieve great variation. if its a sequence, the use of transpose feature is godlike
Thanks for this new trip!
