Once again Vindolanda delivers the goods, love the nail cleaning tool and the portable altar.I like to imagine the Roman troops popping out for a pizza from that oven, especially in the bleak winter months it would have been cosy in there. 😀

Thank you Marta for bringing history alive,i,m learning so much about the Romans.I walked the cantral sector of the Wall in May and visited Vindolanda, was blown away by the excavations and artefacts in the museum.Well done to Eric for for finding that exquisite brooch, the colours really stand out.I had the pleasure of meeting Professor Andrew Birley at the on going excavation site,i must admit to being slightly overwhelmed and tongue tied!😀

Marta, Thank you for following up on my recent inquiry about fossils at the site. Here’s another question: from how far away were Vindolandia’s stones quarried. Are they all the same type of limestone. Or lots of variations due to what was accessible at different points of time? Also what percentage needed to be cut, as opposed to used, “as is”?

Im loving this series but it would be really great if you could somehow highlight the sections/house that you are talking about when you do an aerial shot. It would really help to get a clearer picture. I’ve got no idea where north or northwest is and sometimes can’t work out which bit you are looking at 😂

Not likely, I'm afraid. They would end up in the ocean well South of NZ. The antipodes of NZ lie mostly in Spain and the Bay of Biscay. I know, because from where I live close to Auckland, New Zealand, the antipode falls in the South of Spain, in the mountains about 50 km almost due North of Gibraltar. I can now sit at my dining table and direct visitors' attention to a modest crystalline rock safely ensconced in the China cabinet, which is an actual piece of the Earth from a point straight down through the Earth from where they are sitting. 🙂

I never fail to be impressed by your explanations of the complexity of the site structures Marta - and how they relate (or not) to each other. With so much construction and reconstruction within a defined space, it's a special skill. Looking forward to catching up soon, Joe

Has anyone plotted where the trash heaps were on the site where the wood fragments with text were found? I am curious if other forts along Hadrian's Wall may have similar finds in similar locations? One thing is for certain, Romans followed many predictable patterns in their behaviors and constructions. Roman forts in Syria and Algeria follow the same patterns as those in Northern Europe. Similar rubbish heaps may simply be waiting.
