My Freeride has 71 Hours and almost 1,300 miles when I get my first Fault Code. The bike will not run. It turns out to be Blink Code 44. This indicates that the auxiliary 12V Battery needs be either charged or replaced. I charged mine using a trickle charger. That solved the problem, for now. A Project Video that briefly shows how I fabricated a small front wheel for my Freeride E-XC. I was requested by a friend to make this wheel. Is it a new holeshot device? A new idea for training wheels? No and no. My wife asked if it is an aid to learn stoppies. That is not the case, either. So what is it for? Watch to find out! Thank you so much. Please a video on chain tension adjustment
Hopefully someone here can help me, my bike was sitting for about two weeks, and when i started the bike i got fault code 43, it says in the manual switch the main switch on and off, but its still the same, i tried more than 20 times…
I find the default 12V battery completely lacking in capacity and this has left me stranded a number of times. Not good since I drive on the streets! A long traffic jam could eat up the 12V so if you turn the bike off for a bit, it might not start again. I want to replace the lousy standard battery with a quality kit any suggestions?
Hey, hopefully you can help me with my question. I get 3 of the riding mode lamps lit up and the daily light blinking erratically when I power up my bike, you can still ride but the engine braking is not available in power mode 1. I’ve been trying to hunt down the explanation in the manual but to no avail.
Daily=fault lamp/ light
I have the same problem i looked it up in the book there was a explanation but nothing on how to fix it
What oil did you use?
Your forgot to ride it
Hello, have you checked the chain tension on your freeride? Can you make a video?
I have the 2021 model and the auxiliary battery is now also a Lithium-Ion one.
what if the 12v battery was charged ,checked the voltage levels of the battery and it was ok but the error code was not eliminated will replacing the battery solve the problem .thank you!
My son and I used to ride there a lot. Great memories. The hanging rock trail head out of Ironton Ohio it’s a pretty good track as well. 35 miles total. Although that’s a long drive (2.5 hrs) from Nelsonville. Good bit more technical but rideable for most.
how can the blink on the sx-e 5 be eliminated on the first start up, which doesn't have a 12v battery .thanks!
Thanks for info. I just bought a Freeride E-XC and was wondering how many miles or hours of operation before gear oil change and how much oil is necessary. Got my answers. Well presented.
Wow I have never seen that many trees down there
Thank you, I don't own one, but curiosity had me. When I change the oil on my KTM's, I cut the handlebars fully to the side and lean the grip on my bike stand so it is not fully "on the ground". This is enough to fill the oil filter cavity to the manual specification. Could you do the same with the gear oil fill I wonder?
Hi Rob. Yes, I think this would work. I'm approaching the 75 hour mark on my Freeride, and plan on changing the gear oil soon. I'll try this method, should be better than my original idea.
Merci pour l astuce 👍👏
Je vous en prie, Loic!
Are you from this area? We are looking to spend a weekend out there wondering if it's worth spending 3 days there. Trying to find somewhere on the east coast to make a dirt bike vacation for a few days.
Will, I live 1.5 hours away. I've only been to Wayne twice and only ridden a small portion of the trails. I'm not sure how technical of a ride you like, I'd rate the trails that I was on as mild. They are good for a family ride. I do have a coworker who frequently camps and rides there for 2-3 days at a time, he really enjoys it. My biggest concern is that you have to be aware of oncoming traffic, and I've heard the parking/camping areas can get congested over weekends. I hope this helps, if you have any more questions just reply, and I'll try to answer.
@@gtoutrider5762 hell yea man! My wife is probably slow C class so that sounds perfect for us
Hey Will! I live out this way. I ride these trails every weekend from Friday to Sunday from opening of the season to the end. Best time of the year is in the summer for sure. When I ride I get to the trail head just before sun rise and ride till about 2pm. If you get there early you won’t see anyone till about noon. Season pass is about $35 dollars. But you’ll probably just wanna get a weekend pass. Hope this helps.
@@prestonsaunders1188 thanks man! Seems like a pretty nice area to ride!

Sir can u ride this bike on normal cement and ashpalt roads..I am almost 5.10..5.11 ...
I believe the bike is street legal in European Markets. However, it is not in the US and is limited to off road use only.
I have one in Minnesota that I made street legal. It has all the wires and hook ups for lights so it was super easy.

This is good information. Sorry you went through that. I was thinking that the 12v only charged through forward motion. Am I correct? (I've seen videos of "no start" situation because 12v is completely flat even when power pack battery is fully charged, but 12v monitors ALL other functions except motor. ) Any codes will be a big problem for me as my nearest KTM e-tech is 2 states away. Is that 12v moto battery lithium? easily found at shops or dealers? (I ask because I've never seen pos/neg terminals like that.) Regardless.. well done,, keep it coming!
Hi Dan. According to the Owner's Manual under Recuperation, in Riding Mode 1 (Economy), the Powerpack HV (not the 12V Battery) is charged by the electric motor when the throttle grip is fully closed in overrun. Basically an engine braking effect that increases with motor speed. Recuperation is not available in Modes 2 & 3. The Manual also states that the 12V Battery is only charged if the Powerpack HV is being charged in the vehicle, as opposed to removing the Powerpack HV and charging it. So, no, forward motion does not charge the 12V Battery. The 12V Battery is not Lithium. It is a YUASA NP1.2-12 valve regulated lead acid battery, 12V 1.2 Ah. However, it is very small and light (I weighed it at 0.58 kg (1.28 lbs)), and is easy to remove and install. It's currently available on Amazon Prime for ~$18, and as low as ~$6 on other sites. The Manual also states that when the 12V Battery has been discharged (Fault Code 44), recharge the 12V Battery immediately. FYI, I've ridden the bike several times since this incident with no problems. Hope this helps!
@@gtoutrider5762 he'll yeah it helps! Thank you!!!
@@gtoutrider5762 I just bought a new 2022 and the sales person told me I need to use a charger for lithium batteries for that little battery. I'll need to find some verified info. Also I think what you're saying is that to recharge during riding, be in Mode 1, and close the throttle all the way when decellerating.
@@patrickleigh1523 The little auxiliary battery is a Lead Acid Battery, and I've charged it in the past using a battery tender. Note that when this battery dies, the bike will not operate. If you get this error, you may be able to charge the battery a couple of times, but I'd recommend a new auxiliary battery. Also, if you are riding remote locations, I recommend buying another auxiliary battery as a spare and carry it with you. Yes, this is a pain, but it's better than being stranded. To recharge during riding: I don't think it matters what mode you are riding, the main battery should charge the auxiliary, similar to an alternator. If and when you get this error code, it's probably a good indication that a new auxiliary battery is needed. Mine lasted about a year. Enjoy your new '22 Freeride!
That small little auxiliary battery is easy to accidentally leave the key on the headlight and tail light can drain enough power to trigger the 44 code. One time while unloading the bikes preparing to go ride I left the key on for probably 30 minutes and sure enough code 44 flashing. Electric bikes are so quiet sometimes it is easy to forget they are still turned on when park them. Enjoy the Freeride!
Hi mx! I didn't leave the key on for any length of time. I was testing GoPro Settings, and riding around the yard for ~2 laps after making a change, and then turning everything off on the bike. After the third settings change on the GoPro, this happened. I'll have to keep checking the auxiliary battery with a voltmeter, hopefully I won't need a new one.
@@gtoutrider5762 The 12v can easily die if you crash or drop the bike, so having a spare battery is mandatory. I pushed my bike 10km once through the woods and Ill never do that again.
@@enforcer-enduro Since I received this code, I've been debating whether or not to carry a spare 12V Battery. I'd prefer not to, but after hearing about your experience, I probably will. It beats pushing the bike! Thanks for sharing, Fredrik.
@@enforcer-enduro remove the fuse 3 and 4. This will get you moving again. These are the light fuses. When 12V battery is low, then the consumption of the lights will lower the system voltage too much. Without lights, there is no such power consumption and the bikes starts up just fine
Ouch! 😵 (guess it could have been worse.. did front end lose traction before the ramp?) Yeah, That single pinch top clamp is going to be number 2 on my sortie list for sure. Glad you are ok.
Hi Dan! Yes the front end lost traction under braking. This is the same same thing that happened last time I laid the bike over, which was in the summer and only a few feet away. The only difference was that the first time I didn't bounce my face off of a frozen-solid pile of topsoil!
I hope your okay brother.
Hi Scott! I'm fine, just a little sore.
I've heard a few riders note that the front end moves too easily (and the single-bolt top clamp pinch bolt isn't helping). I wish it was stouter, but everything has it's price point and weight considerations, I suppose. Thanks for the vid.
You're welcome MrChadx1. Thank you for watching and the comment!
Winter riding can be tricky with the frozen icy spots of dirt! Glad you are OK and easy enough to realign the front end of the Freeride!
I'm a little sore, but the ride was so much fun! Finally had sub-zero temps that made my entire yard rideable, instead of swampy wet spots in certain areas.
Very creative and well done!
Thanks MX!

Thank you, sir! Exactly the test I'd asked so many other KTM Freeride E-XC owners to do and none did. There were a couple that did mode 1 reviews, but they rode it hard and wide open, which kind of defeats the purpose of Mode 1 Eco. Your test better simulates a slow family trail ride. That 26.3 miles range at that cold of temperatures of 23F - 33F surprised me. I bet at a comfortable 65F - 75F temps, one could get 30 - 35 miles; about the same as my Surron X. But the KTM is a much more comfortable bike (riding position, quality moto suspension rather than mountain bike suspension, larger diameter wheels/tires to roll over rough trail, etc.). Maybe the KTM is back in the running for me. Or could fill the gap for a couple years while waiting for a true 50 - 60 mile range trail bike to come out. Really appreciate your being responsive to a request for this content and for taking the time especially when it was below freezing temps! Top notch. Thank you!
You're welcome MrChadx1. I do believe that a test like this in 65F - 75F Temps should result in a mileage range of low to mid 30's. I went from a '19 Alta EXR to the KTM Freeride, and the Alta was superior in range, power, and acceleration. However, where the Freeride really shines is trail riding, especially in the woods. Check out this video from a buddy, mxengineer1, where he compares lap times on his 2020 KTM Freeride to his Erzberg Rodeo and Kailub Russell 350: czcams.com/video/QIu5s9RFiXo/video.html
Can't wait till the pond freezes thick enough to ride on it! Enjoy that Freeride E-XC!:)
Neither can I! Looks like warmer temps are in the immediate forecast, may have to wait a bit longer. Love the Freeride!
Great vid. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I've been riding a Surron X the last couple years and can get 25 - 35 miles on easy, family mountain trail rides in eco mode. Have to take one of the ICE bikes for our typical 50 - 60 mile rides. Really looking forward to an E-dirtbike that is closer to fullsize like the KTM Freeride or Surron Storm that can do an honest 40 - 50 miles out of it on eco trail rides. That may not be until the next generation KTM by the sounds of it. Any chance you can do a max range ride in Mode 1 "eco"? Terrain seems to make a fair bit of difference (asphalt/packed gravel vs trail rides). Not sure what you have for trail riding in your area. Very few KTM riders are doing mode 1 rides. I know it's not exciting, but the data is valuable to many of us looking for a Edirtbike for family trail rides. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment, MrChadx1! Yes, I can create a Max Ride Range Video in Mode 1. However, temperatures are currently below freezing here (30 Degrees F), so the Freeride will probably be in 50% Power in Mode 1, and I expect the range to be decreased as well. I'll set up a trail-like course in the yard and keep the average speed low, as to simulate a family trail ride. I'll try to Record / Edit / Post within the next few days.
Great video 👍🏻
Thanks Scott! I do enjoy the Freeride.
Great video! You normal range in Map 3 is 60~70 minutes? Not surprised to see less range in the cold but perhaps not as big of a drop due to the power down mode. Looking forward to racing on the ice once the pond freezes!
Thanks MX! Yes, normal range in the yard (in Mode 3) is anywhere from 60 - 90 minutes. Hopefully the pond will freeze over this year so we can ride on it!
