People always say we can’t judge the past with our modern standards, but they never go further than that. What are the standards of those eras? For example, were the Japanese atrocities in Nanjing bad for the standards of the 1940s? Was the My Lai massacre a bad thing for the 1960s standards? I also hear Columbus was pretty bad for the late 1400s standards where even the Spanish Monarchs reprimanded him for the shit he did in the Americas.
