Is it better to use both wood and charcoal ?

Hi It's to get the fire started. You cannot get coal to burn from cold On this scale easy light or paraffin soaked charcoal is excellent but even on full size engines they still use wood to get a fire started

Matt Seymour Hi. No not really. I found using steam coal broken into anything around half inch or little bigger was best. You can see sone in the video Too small and it burns too fast and breaks up dropping through the bars as will the anthracite which powders too fast

So grains is not as good as bigger coal?

Matt Seymour When you move the flywheel if the mechanical pump is engaged you should see water coming down the pipe to what would be the clack

Matt Seymour You should see water coming from the pump to that clack yes The ball bearing should be free to move up in the clack when the engine is cold as there is no pressure to hold it down on the seat You can find out by pushing a small rod (paper clip should do on that scale) up into the clack If you don't have water coming from the pump you need to check the pump feed and return valve are all correct If you don't have water coming from the

Matt Seymour if you take the pipe off the clack do you see water pumping ? If yes then you need to check the ball on the clack to make sure it's not seized and water can pass into the boiler

Hi Sorry I only just saw your questions. You need either parafin soaked charcoal or wood to get a fire going Once the charcoal is burning well and formed a good hot layer you can add small amounts of coal Firing on small engines is a constant thing little and often is the only way really You'll need what coal merchants term "beans" Not sure what you mean by priming the mechanical pump ? As long as the tender is full it will pull water .. there should be a valve which you turn to send water into boiler or back to tender

I've tried that with the valve and it still doesn't pump water Into the boiler.. Why is that?

Hi. no I just did the work on it to super detail and weather it phoenix locos are very good. I guess if you order just parts to self build then it might be quicker this one sold for about 6500 due to all the extras on it. give you an idea against a basic one

Hi 2.4 Ghz digital radio control from spektrum linked to 4QD control for motors.

Bryn Morgan hi The motors are the ones that came with the loco from Dan Jeavons, now under miniature rail supplies. Not sure of the make.

John Gay if you have a look at marksmodelboatbits.com under foggy units it will show you the info. You need 24v to run the mister piezzo and anything from 6 to 12v to power the fan which blows air in forcing the vapour out

So the fan is wired to a motor ? And the main heater is on the 24v off battery

John Gay Hi Mike, how have you wired them up to your loco, i have a dan jeavons western and was looking into sound and smoke, this has defo inspired me to do this

John Gay hi, they are simply wired to be turned on from radio control, see my class 37 video where it details how i installed them and where they come from
