1948 Elgin Outboard, Will it Run?

This is my 1948 ( I believe) Elgin Outboard, It's been sitting "stuck" in my garage for a few years, and for who knows how long before that. In this video we try to get the ignition sorted out by replacing the coils and laminate with a mismatch of parts and see if it will run for us. Eventually, I plan on possibly putting this motor on the back of my Argo to use when crossing bodies of water.

      @@jimatkins2980 if you can find a parts diagram online and pull the part number off that, just googling it or putting it into Amazon often produces results. I wonder sometimes if a 3d printer could be used with a proper filiment to replicate them.

      @@RustRehabthat's the approach I'm trying with the water pump. I pulled the plugs today and I was amazed that when it was winterized the oils were still there. But yeah I think a 3d-printer would work. I hadn't thought of that. I'll do some research on it and get back with you. That's a great idea 💡

    Working on my 47 IHC KB5 and found some new 750 20 tires out of China. Pulled the rims and at ture shop now. Once off there is another series of bolts that just spin. Look like they're going into the drum. Trying to figure out back side on and was hoping I'd see you remove rims but didn't on video unless I missed that one?

      @@brunoclassics nope, sorry! Those tires are actually still on those rims today for me. They're almost ready to go back on the truck, but there's a tire shop up my way that still does these tires so I'll just have them do it all when the time comes for a replacement

    your black firewall piece is on wrong,, it slips into a grove at the top, and you have it on the outside of the machine, the top ducks under one piece and against the other at the top, look and you will see what im talking about,, iv got a conquest that i bought new in 96 and it still looks new,, it took the place of the magnum but is the exact same machine except 4 the engine witch is a 20 hp Kawasaki v-twin and liquid cooled, i don't understand why we can't get parts 4 these old machines anymore, it ain't like you need parts 4 a new one, somebody needs 2 tell odg that and we ain't happy, it also might have a influence on buying a new machine someday...

      A 549v8, there's a motor! Mine eventually ended up with a 454 Chev, I looked for over a year for an international motor to put in but their just not common in eastern Canada like they are in the USA.

    What this said about at "1:10" is basically correct. Or as also called a: "COMBINATION MANIFOLD". "DANG!" I LOVE THIS! But at the same time, I also envy the snot out of this guy watching him doing what I've always had a love to do and hopefully will do again one day: "RESTORE ANTIQUE TRUCKS". But with me, I don't want to just: HEAR THIS TRUCK PURR LIKE A KITTEN, SEE THIS TRUCK ABLE TO DRIVE AROUND. NO, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE OLD TRUCK "FULLY RESTORED" PAINTED, AND EVERYTHING!!!       I need to replace the coils in an old Martin outboard. I looked at them on Ali express about a year ago but can't find the ones at that price any more. they use to sell just the coil part without the laminates. Does someone have a link to these?

    It's a two engine. Two stroke engines need carb cleaning all the time, because of gunk build ups. So first give a thorough carb maintenance,and,then give it a proper test in a water drum !

    Most motors low speed top needle about 3/4 to 1 turn and Bottom 1 1/2 about turn out you will know when you go to start it. You need the original pressurized tank to make it run. The pressurized tank is what keeps the motor running and provides the fuel throughout the motor.

    That is the original bowl gasket. be careful of that small cork round gasket it is must for it to be there .

    I always shut off my motors with Throttle control never with the choke, using choke is wrong .

    That float in the carb changes up tp a plastic float a must do as the varnish on the old cork does peel off . Also be careful of those 2 screws on the high and low speed knobs hard to fine new ones.

    The squeaky noise it the rewind very common with those old motors. Also 24:1 fuel mixture .

    Just to help you out 1957 is the year of your motor. Your also missing the rubber bumpers for the hood .

      Thanks! If it wasn't for an issuing I'm having finding some steering parts, specifically a bearing, I think I might have been able to get mine to move this year under its own power

      What kind of bearing is it? Last winter I sleeved a couple ball roller bearings to replace the obsolete output bearings in a transfer case. Purchased new bearings with correct width and inner dimensions and sleeved the outer on a lathe. Worked great. Wonder if that could done for your situation?

      @@ponway unfortunately, it's a taperd roller bearing. I can find the outter seat no problem, but not the bearing number. Even took it to a bearing shop and had no luck. I may put up a post on one of the forms and see if I can have it identified, or maybe just buy one off someone. Absolute worst case, I guess I could replace the steering box, but we'll cross that bridge only if we have to

      @@ponway there are 2 in the steering box, one on the top and one on the bottom. I seem to remember there being just a few bolts and a plate to remove at the bottom, but I could be mistaken. I was suprised My bearing place couldn't just get the dimensions off it and order a new one based off that

      Thanks Paul! It had been slow going for a while, but it's coming together again now. The next major hurdle is steering, I need to make a new steering shaft to go around my manifolds. I can't find a bearing that I need to replace in the steering box, but once I have, I'll be able to tackle that.

      Nope! It's been a few years now and it's held beautiful. I haven't done the second coat yet, I plan to wait another year or two, and so far so good. Especially considering the minimal prep I did, I'm pretty tickled with it.

      FYI, I believe that new head gasket is made of a material we call “grafoil”. I work in maintenance at a paper mill in upstate NY and we use this material for sealing high temperature applications. Basically a sandwich of stainless steel foil between two layers of graphite impregnated fibers. At least as far as I can tell from the video, it should be more than suitable for that purpose.

    Mix the ATF with something like PB Blaster to thin it out and let that soak it. The oils dry out over time and this has been sitting. Roll it slowly with the plugs out.

    This is about a 1957 to 58 motor. It should run. Usually clean the point and plugs to make sure there's a good spark. Also change the lower unit oil and water pump impeller. All these arts are available.

    Just watched this video 2 years after you put it out, so you probably won't notice the comment. There may be a a screen filter in the output side of the gas tank that is gummed up. This motor reminds me of my grandfather's 1939 Johnson Seahorse. I had the fuel tank screen problem along with a carburetor that was hard to keep sealed. Great video!

      Thanks for the comment! I can't remember if I took all the fuel lines off that tank or not. I discovered that one of the bolts (or was it a stud?) holding the carb down had snapped, so it was running much leaner than it should. I do love small outboards of that era, it's too bad that the impellers are hard to come by now.
