Dreamcatcher are outdoing themselves here once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's backing vocals is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. They noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your face turns blue, blue. Your expression is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.

Typically, high notes and ad libs are either Siyeon or Yoohyeon. If it's a title track, it's Siyeon 99% of the time. If it's a b-side it could be either. You'll find all of them doing belts throughout the discography though and that's only getting more common as time progresses.

"Bon Voyage" is the 3rd and final part of the Apocalypse trilogy, which is about the destruction of the environment by humanity. The members have mentioned that it is about giving nature a break. Any encounter between human beings always has separation attached to it as well, just as death is a part of life. SuA also said that the fluffy floating thing that Dami summons from her painting is a cell, representing nature. It has been named "Celly" and is adorable, right? My dark mind believes that they are saying "Have a good trip" to humanity, since we are well on our way of wiping ourselves out. It's like a breakup between humanity and the earth. Once humanity is gone, nature gets the break it needs and the circle will begin again. For me, the key to understanding the lyrics is that they are singing as human beings, not as a single person. And they are singing to nature, confessing their love and the realization that we are not good for nature and that it probably resents us. It could also be the other way round (them singing as mother nature to humanity). SuA jumping out after the dove seem to represent their desire for peace. There are still many things I don't know. For example, why are all three titles in French. 😉 (And why are there 3 Damis with 7 shadows...) The story of the MV seems to be that the rest of humanity has sheltered away under force fields after the apocalypse. This gives nature time to heal. Musically I can already say this is one of their best songs for me. The chorus slaps hard, and the variations between heavy and slow are just beautiful. It has emotion and impact at the same time. Putting JiU's sweet voice together with an acoustic guitar is simply genius. At first glance you could think OOTD is about them being proud and happy with themselves, about confidence. I don't think that is it though. The album is called VersuS VillainS, which makes me think it is not this simple. So I believe this song is meant as a criticism of narcissism, vanity, materialism and also (maybe) the fast fashion industry. "OOTD" stands for "Outfit of the Day" after all, maybe it's about useless instagram fashion-influencers posting videos of their outfit of the day, which also promotes fast fashion. The fact that fashion is moving ever faster makes it the most destructive industry to the planet only outdone by the fossil fuel industry. The Aral lake has all but disappeared because of the cotton industry for example. It would fit to the Villain image, and you can see in the MV that they are acting. It is shown in the scene where Yoohyeon and Handong are fighting, but then the camera is off and Handong helps Yoohyeon up. The main reason why I don't think it is about confidence or their own success is the line "Driving on the highway, drunken everyday, do you feel like a monster?" and the album title. That just doesn't fit. And there was the ymenehcra (arch enemy backwards) account posting about touching a crown is dangerous and other cryptic messages before the comeback. It could also be a big and well-hidden F*U to the Kpop industry, like the Nightmare arc probably was. The narcissism and materialism is definitely criticized here, and Dreamcatcher have been criticized a lot themselves because of their rock/metal concept, while other groups have been celebrated for using a guitar riff once in a song. And Handong standing in front of the camera with bruises all over her legs seems to be a comment on the merciless industry as well. The music is highly interesting as well. The Rock is dirty and distorted. The song structure is not what you'd expect at all, for me it is funk rock meets K-Pop. Not their usual spiel, but a very good progression. It takes a couple of listens to really appreciate it.

If a high note is involved, 90% of the time, it will be from Siyeon. The high note in Bon Voyage is from Siyeon.

"Maison" is part 1 of the Apocalypse trilogy. Dreamcatcher are touching on a very important subject here. Maison is French for "house" or rather "home", and they are singing about everyone's home, which is our planet. Previously they talked about online hate, now they are tackling an issue that impacts the whole planet and therefore everyone. Climate change is going to affect all of us, and it is already affecting many people. Island Nations will disappear under the ocean ("Save my home in the ocean"). Ice melts in the arctic and displaces people ("Save my home in the polar"). Forests get decimated by corporate greed and habitats get destroyed ("Save my home in the jungle") and disappearing glaciers and snow packs result in even less water for deserts ("Save my home in the desert"). People have a natural tendency to ignore issues that seem to be in the future - but climate change is here, right now. We can't wait anymore, and it is good that Dreamcatcher use their platform to promote change: "Break your habit now!" Musically I really enjoy the song. Like in BEcause, the rock/metal vibe is dialed back a bit, but it is still there and highly distorted. Although the more I listen to it, the more Rock I hear. I especially like how the pre-chorus and chorus seems to appear out of nowhere, the chord progression in the bridge, and the epic end part. The bass line is crazy as well. LEEZ and Ollounder (their producers) have done it again, and the members are just brilliant. Respect! "Vision" is part 2 of the Apocalypse trilogy. I believe they are showing us the perspective from the future in this series, showing us how the earth looks like when we keep acting like we do. While "Maison" was talking about the destruction of the environment, here they seem to be talking about the destruction due to war. I don't know if that was the idea from the beginning, but Putin's aggression definitely played a role here. In one set they even dance in front of what looks sort of like a huge trident, which is the coat of arms of Ukraine (could be a coincidence though, or this is me seeing things). It is easy to see how the conflict in Ukraine could result in global destruction. It's just a push of a button away. Note that Dami presses a launch button, but it's not for nukes. It's for spreading their message, their vision. Peace. To be heard all around the world. The song is also a call for action, to stand together against aggressors and those who are destroying the planet out of greed. There is not much difference between someone leading an army or a corporation, if the result is destruction. Still, Dami said the intention is to resolve the problems in a peaceful way. So, what do we do? There is no easy answer. Dami has an outfit that shows that perfectly. One half is an innocent bridal dress, the other half is simply badass. What I know is that any aggressor only listens to very limited diplomacy, and they need to know that the good in the world is ready and willing to fight them if needed. Whoever the aggressor is, we are more than them. They need to know they will never succeed, the only option is peace. By the way, my interpretation could be completely wrong, any other theory is perfectly valid as well. Musically, it's heavier than Maison, and I feel it fits the subject matter very well. It sounds aggressive and heavy, but also soft and vulnerable. There is the duality again. And I love the fake keychange at the end of the chorus, the crazy bass and the guitar in the bridge. All in all this is a fantastic release!

Scream is part 1 of the Dystopia trilogy, which is about cyber-bullying, hateful comments and people losing themselves in the (fake) online world. It is mostly showing the victim's perspective of (cyber)bullying, comparing it to a medieval witch hunt and a burning at the stake. The tree is the tree of language, and it grows black fruit for every hurtful thing people say. Note also the hand gesture, it is the devil's horns introduced by Ronnie James Dio as a symbol for metal, but it originally was a gesture in the middle ages to ward off the evil eye, tying into the witch hunt theme. I really enjoy the music, it's rock mixed with EDM. Dreamcatcher are always very creative, and they are in their own genre by this point. Odd Eye is part 3 of the Dystopia trilogy. People can get lost in the world of the Internet and social media and their online personas can take over their life. Dreamcatcher want us to use our odd eye to see through the lies (on Facebook and others) and don't be fooled by the "lies masked in sweetness". I can only recommend to keep reacting to them, they are always interesting and entertaining! And the song is a banger!

What are Piri are my two favorites from the Nightmare era. Piri was actually the first DC song I ever heard. It happened to pop up in a random playlist while I was driving one day, and I immediately loved it. When I got to a redlight I grabbed my phone and went back to it and liked it, but I unfortunately forgot about it by time I got home. It wasn't until a little over a year later, in late 2020, that I rediscovered them with the Scream MV and I've been a fan ever since.

"What" is still in my top 3 favorite title tracks. It's heavy for a Korean release and I love the syncopation in the second half of the chorus. Story-wise this is the first time they wear non-uniform outfits, which I believe is because they lost Yoohyeon (or at least her spirit) and are kind of broken. You can also see them search for her alone, not as a group. For me this is a song about the loss of a loved one and what that does to a group or family. I might be reaching, but this is the meaning for me. "Piri" is the last part of the Nightmare Arc (their Japanese release "Breaking out" can be seen as an alternative ending). In "What", the girls have been searching for Yoohyeon, and here they find each other again, but in the end they are all stuck in the white dimension. A Piri is a Korean flute that was used historically to signal danger, and that is what Yoohyeon does here when the members arrive. She is the one capturing them one by one, to rescue them and bring them to safety. They are together in the end, but still stuck. Dreamcatcher don't do happy endings. 😉

Rock bands were banned from TV in Korea for some years a couple of decades ago after one punk rock band stripped naked on live tv. So of course SK overacted and banned them all regardless. So anyone doing rock gets less attention but it's slowly getting better. Unfortunately it appears that many SK youth were raised to be afraid of rock. SK is very conservative.

I was scared for you when you picked up your cup to drink just before the horn went off for Piri, lol. Glad you didn't get startled. Glad you are enjoying your DC journey. There are so many great songs ahead, title tracks and b-sides. You're in for a real treat. As for biases, Siyeon and Dami are my biases. SuA is the bias wrecker.

"Fly High" is probably the poppiest of the Nightmare arc. It was not done by their usual production team as well. But it makes sense, since this is a prequel, so bringing in a bit of the Minx sound makes sense to me. There are really heavy parts in it as well, which clearly state that they are not Minx anymore. And I love the dark parts thrown in, they really make the song special. The light part sung by SuA after the metal break is in major, while the rest of the song is in minor. That is why it stands out so much. They did the same in Good Night, but a lot shorter. About the MV: You can see Yoohyeon burning the spider, which brought the curse of the spider queen down on the members. You will see the spider queen again in You and I. In Native American mythology, spiders are considered protectors, that is why a Dreamcatcher resembles a spider's net. That is a brilliant connection to their name! 😊 In "You and I" you can see the spider queen coming for Yoohyeon. She is the old woman that is being photographed - only to rob Yoohyeon's spirit. Also, earlier we see Dongie being pinned to the wall by needles, what is usually done to insects. For me, Yoohyeon's spirit is being pulled out here and thrown into the white dimension, which we will see again in Piri. The spider queen takes over her body, which is why we see JiU try to free Yoohyeon (without success) and grab her neck in the end. I highly recommend to check out the dance practice as well, because Dami does something very special that didn't make it into the MV.

Good Night is one of their heavier releases, and I love it. The K-Rock girl group Rolling Quartz also did an excellent cover of it. The Nightmare hunter casts spells to trap the members, but they get the book from him and turn it against him, trapping him behind the mirror. The next song in the Nightmare arc, "Fly High", is from the album "Prequel", which is a strong hint to consider. 😉 That is also a very interesting song.

"Chase me" was their debut, released on January 13th (a Friday), 2017. It must have been nerve-wrecking for the members, re-debuting with a genre that is not popular in Korea after Minx failed. (5 of them were Minx before.) But they already doubled their sales with this. And they stuck with the Rock/Metal vibe until today, now selling 50 times the albums than Minx did. This is the start of the Nightmare arc, which spans 6 MVs and 1 Japanese release. They are Nightmares here, and the Nightmare hunter is trying to dispel them - how that turns out is shown in the next one, Good Night.

Chase Me is their debut song as Dreamcatcher on January 13th (a Friday), 2017. 5 of the members, Jiu, Sua, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, & Dami were a completely different group before this called Minx, who debuted in 2014. That was Dami, lol. She does have that effect on people. Dreamcatcher's music has great dynamics. They switch between these really soft beautiful flowing sections into these hard-hitting hype sections. Their pre-choruses and bridges are second to none. That dynamism gives them the ability to make music that's very emotionally resonant while also making you want to rock out, or the Cry while you Headband genre, lol. My initial bias was Sua, but very quickly I became OT7. Once you start getting to know the members and see how ridiculous they are behind the scenes and how loving and caring they are for each other and the fans it's hard not to love them all. Now for the Lore question. They have a ton of Lore in the videos, especially the songs that are part of on-going storylines. For instance, Chase Me is the beginning of the Nightmare Series which consists of the following songs. Chase Me - Debut song Good Night Fly High - This is a prequel to Chase Me You & I What Piri Breaking Out - This is their first Japanese release and the finale of the Nightmare series. In the Nightmare series each of the members represent a fear or Nightmare. The Nightmare curse was triggered by something that happens in Fly High and they all become cursed and trapped in a semi-dead/spirit state. The Nightmare storyline seems them become cursed, fight off hunters (one of which you saw in Chase Me), and attempt to free themselves from the Nightmare realm. Lyrically, the songs tend to speak to real issues that we all face. The Nightmare series of songs tend to discuss internal conflicts such as dealing with societal expectations, fear, loneliness, depression, and more. Looking forward to your deep dive. If you're going to do album reactions, then make sure that you don't skip the Intro's as they're fantastic mood setters for each album. Also, there are a bunch of special clips and performance videos for each album that you can watch as well. They also do a TON of covers.

Thanks for checking out more Dreamcatcher! The "rough" answer for your question on why they're not as popular as other groups that you listed is multifaceted. The 3 biggest factors, based on what I've seen, are the Rock/Dark concept, the fact that they're from a smaller company (not one of the big 4), and the fact that they were originally a different group named Minx that disbanded and reformed as Dreamcatcher. Rock isn't as popular in Korea as it once was due to some unfortunate events that happened in the past that led to "rock" being blacklisted by broadcasting agencies. I don't have all the facts on this but it had something to do with an Indie rock group doing a performance on broadcast TV in the nude. Also, the fact that Dreamcatcher launched with a horror concept as a girl group was pretty much unheard of when Dreamcatcher debuted. Happy Face Entertainment (Now Dreamcatcher Company) is a relatively small company compared to the heavy hitters in the industry and that plays a role as well. I've noticed that a lot of the discourse from K-Pop fans, specifically those from Korea, has a bias towards popularity for popularity's sake and a group that failed and re-branded is seen as a negative to some people. In the west, the underdog tends to be pretty popular because it's seen as someone overcoming an obstacle and rising above their circumstances but, from what I've seen, the Korean general population doesn't feel the same way towards groups and Idols who've gone through hardships or failures and managed to overcome them. The flip side of this is that Dreamcatcher, while not that popular in Korea, is fairly popular internationally. They've got a pretty large following in places like the US, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Malaysia. They're one of the most traveled k-pop groups I believe, having done concerts in 26 countries, with 8 tours now. They were the first K-Pop group invited to one of the world's largest rock festivals, Primavera Sound in Barcelona Spain, they were dubbed the "Face of Rock in K-Pop" by Rolling Stone India, and they have topped the I-Tunes worldwide charts a few times. I also think there's a bit of a disconnect between their perceived popularity and the reality since they have such a diverse fanbase. Their concerts tend to be pretty fairly balanced between men and women with ages ranging from people in their retirement years to teenagers so there's a large portion of their fanbase that doesn't spend a lot of time online. Do you have an idea of how you're going to tackle the deep dive? Are you wanting some guides to check out?

Deja Vu is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is a beautiful, fragile ballad that kicks your teeth down your throat in the chorus. It is extra difficult to sort out, because it tells the story from two perspectives. You know how even evil people think they are the good guys? This is reflected here. One perspective is Yoohyeon's, who gets corrupted right in the beginning. She thinks JiU is bad (does not want to share power) and backstabs her and kills, imprisons or banishes the other members so that she can rule alone. The other perspective is reality, where we can see JiU be kind to Yoohyeon, but she gets killed for it. I believe this is a commentary on the different perspectives people can have about the same event. The lyrics seem to hint at an abusive relationship, where there are usually two perspectives as well, and the abuser finds excuses to justify their actions, while the abused find themselves in an endless Deja Vu.

Their style is k-pop with rock influence/elements. My bias is Yoohyeon with Handong nipping at her heels.

Dreamcatcher fun fact: The main rapper (Dami) has the 2nd highest voice after the main dancer (SuA).
