While downsizing my mother-in-law who very much would fill the cupboards and spaces with clutter (a borderline hoarder), I found a trick that works for her-and now several others-including me, use it to keep certain spaces clutter free - like your 5 x 5 cubbies. First, do your declutter, of course. Then, use the empty space for ONE thing. The thing you put there must be a very very sentimental item. It may be buried in the back of the cupboard, but it’s extremely important. You kept it because your heart will never rest if you part with it. It holds good memories - another important part. Why keep it in the dark. That thing now lives in that space. For everyone who has done this, the places where we put extremely sentimental items (from family, kids, lovers, or a sign of an extremely difficult accomplishment), we have maintained that space. It is never cluttered, sometimes dusty, but never cluttered with other stuff. It is like a sacred space. No clutter invited. This works great for chronically sentimental people assigning value to things, especially if the person can tell the story of its origin to you (as the helpful declutter partner) and to anyone who visits. They will think about what they set down there. ‘That mail doesn’t go there!’ I swear it is true that some people cannot SEE clutter, but they can see that very special place holding that very important thing. For mother-in-law it was a swan. It was from an old boyfriend. She had it in her hand and I saw her start to put it on the “special“ shelf. I asked her what she was thinking and about where the swan came from. She said she was thinking to herself: is it important enough to live in the same place as Granma’s teapot.
Or maybe that swan is so special that it needs its own place
Trigger a little more decluttering to create the swan’s special place. I never did get the story, but there is no clutter around that teapot or that swan. 😊 It’s great for shelves after a brick-a-brac and book declutter. The point is ONE thing (if it’s a set it’s okay-like a tea/coffee set), but never a collection.

That scrub mommy got a work out in that kitchen! Dad getting someone in to help, that’s phenomenal. Good on him. I know your help is invaluable. Tidying up, and as my mother says, knocking the first layer off, allows his mind to settle down from an overwhelming state to a bit of breathing space. Having ADHD, I’m time blind-VERY! time blind. I help friends and family members who need help with downsizing, decluttering, cleaning, and always underestimate time needed. Because we don’t see success quickly we don’t get satisfaction from a quick result. We get discouraged and tend to avoid cleaning because it’s not interesting or repetitive, or we go off on a bunny trail of organizing the junk drawer or craft room. Then, at the end of the day, it looks like we’ve got nothing done.
But I finally have a term to use now. Thank you for “invisible cleaning”.

Your question "Is hoarding an inherited trait?" is a great question! My parents both went through the Great Depression as children, which did affect them. They had a garden all of their lives, and preserved or froze everything that they grew. They had a deep freezer which was always packed with food. My mother had tons of clothing that she saved her entire life, even though she had no need for them. Mom sewed all of our clothes from her massive collection of fabrics and clothes that were given to her. She was a textbook hoarder. My Dad was not a hoarder, but he did save money extremely well. They paid cash for everything and did not own any credit cards. Their appliances were always bought second hand as were their vehicles. They lived a simple life. Two of my siblings are hoarders, and the third sibling and I are minimalists. My minimalist sibling and I also have few possessions, pay cash for everything, and save as much money as possible. So, our family is split 50/50- Mom was a hoarder, and 2 siblings are hoarders. Dad was not a hoarder, and 2 siblings are not hoarders. It would be interesting to know why there are hoarding/not hoarding traits present in 4 children who were raised by the same parents.

I think a slow speed of the 1st cleaning of a sink, with faster speeds on the 2nd and 3rd cleanings or not show 2nd and 3rd cleanings except for final wipe off. You’re really great cleaners, so methodical and thorough! Love it all! We understand that things happen in people’s lives, and you may not always be able to give us a new cleaning video every week. Take a sock or old panty hose and fasten it onto the inlet of the hose of your hoover with an elastic band. Put your hoover on a low setting if possible. Then carefully hoover your books, strings with beads, lampshades with applications, small ornaments or dreamcatchers.
