      Thank you for watching and commenting! I'm pleased that it has been helpful. I wish the CZcams algorithm agreed with you. 🤣 as to your question, I think it should be no problem to cut the skirts extra-long and put a tuck in them that you can then let out incrementally as she gets taller. There are multiple images from 15th century Italy depicting skirts with a tuck on the outside, either put in place because it was a second-hand dress bought by someone who is shorter than the original owner, or in order to let the skirts down for a pregnancy belly. Either way it is an authentic method! 🙂

      Great question for my wool and linen garments, I gently hand wash in a tub with cold water some vinegar to make sure the water is the right pH. Stains are treated with dish soap and a vinegar solution. All of the wool pretty much never stains, just linen. For silk I do stain treatment for the most part sometimes I'll do a cold water soak depending on the specific garment,v again with a vinegar solution. I often also hang them up in the shower and just use the shower head to rinse out the dirt. Linen undergarments I just outright laundry in a washing machine on delicate and cold. Some things I will send to the dry cleaners. I guess it depends on the garment! 😅

    Mm. Unfortunately, the USA is almost uniquely unsuited to public transportation. They do not work well for suburbs (too spread out and are often inaccessible by design) which is around a third of the population, and around a fourth or fifth of the population is spread out over 97% of the land, when it has a national size about the size of the entirety of Europe with half the population. The fewer the people and wider the area the transportation network has to cover, the less efficient it is and the less useful/convenient it is for users.

    • @thecreativecontessa
      @thecreativecontessa Před 6 dny

      Funny thing is that before Henry Ford basically destroyed our country, towns were laid out for public transit in and actually had public transit systems. Henry Ford apparently bought up many of those systems and dismantled them so that people would have to buy cars. And thus, the horrible horrible suburbs were born. That being said, I still think public transit is possible in most medium-sized cities. But there are certain lobbies who definitely don't want that to happen.

    • @nevisysbryd7450
      @nevisysbryd7450 Před 6 dny

      @@thecreativecontessa While that is a common claim in modern urbanist and anti-car rhetoric, it is but partially true. Prior to industrialization in the mid-late 19th century, most of the population lived in low-density rural areas-indeed, far lower density than virtually anywhere else. Whereas most of habitable Afroeurasia has been relatively consistently occupied as densely as logistically possible from around the neolithic, what is now the USA underwent an apocalyptic plague relatively shortly after the discovery of the New World with the remaining Natives systematically displaced in the subsequent centuries. There was practically infinite land for the colonists, which created a profoundly different relationship to space and distance and thus density. America was built around travel with carts, wagons, carriages, horses, boats, and ships, unlike near everywhere else on the planet being established based on foot travel and the occasional settlement by aquatic travel. The central and western states were built up around the logistics of trains and ships, and the USA had small farms and semi-independent homesteads at a scale largely unheard of anywhere else other than post-depopulation events. A lot of new homes and settlements were made after automobiles became ubiquitous, too, and their distances both internal and external make them dependent on said vehicles. It is not unusual to be over an hour away (by automobile) from the nearest grocery store in the USA, depending on the area. That said, it is certainly true that this was massively exacerbated by automobiles, and a lot of infrastructure was altered around it. Regional overspecialization and excessive outsourcing also dominate our national logistics and transportation systems, often at the expense of pedestrians. American settlements to this day tend to be more geographically spread out, though especially small and mid-size towns. They rarely make remotely enough income to make anything short of a massive loss, indicating that they are too expensive to be anything other than a collective value loss to the area. A lot of the places in the USA where public transportation is _approaching_ worth it already have it. It is also easy to misunderstand what was the standard at one point in history as being normal, when the economic and logistical phase of the relatively brief period public transportation (especially in America) has existed may actually be anomalous or was built on unsustainable premises. The entire 20th and 21st centuries of the USA were an extreme historical and economic anomaly. However, I do not lay that much at Ford. The destruction of the Civil War and carpetbaggers resulted in a massive disenfranchisement of local industry throughout most of the South and was later expanded by things like FDR's New Deal. The entire logistical system became contingent on intense regional specialization in a way usually exclusive to trade-hub powers and thus requires an enormous amount of mass, long-distance transportation that, in a vacuum, is more expensive than local production. I have found the activists for public transportation often consider it myopically and idealistically, without consideration of the holistic context and why what worked in a different context is inapplicable to ours.

    Halfway through the video. A potentially important note on leather costrels-these appear to have been relatively exclusive to the areas that comprise what is now the United Kingdom. On the continental mainland, personal water carry devices were usually some sort of pottery canteen (stonewear, earthenware, ceramic, etc), what was effectively a tiny barrel, or hollowed out calabash gourds. The French ridiculed the English over this exact topic, saying they 'drank from their boots.' As I understand, this somewhat extended to general cups and tableware, with leather being largely an Albion/Ireland thing (I think related to thd availability and by extension cost of wood?). Conversely, leather _was_ more common further southeast, and was one of the standard materials for water flasks for laymen in the Islamic world in the form of matara. That said, leather costrels are obviously more period than a lot of modern water transportation devices, and are comparatively easier and often cheaper to find than historical canteen reproductions (although some styles of modern canteen are pretty pretty similar), so going for a costrel is often going to be an improvement over available options for some people.

    • @thecreativecontessa
      @thecreativecontessa Před 6 dny

      Thank you for the note! That being said, I was definitely not going to dive into what water carrying devices might be appropriate for a specific personae because this video is not about an authentically medieval pennsic, but rather surviving the event. 🙂 As you say, no matter one's persona, a leather costrel is an infinitely massive improvement over modern water carrying devices, and pottery options might be too heavy (and fragile) for some people. Besides which - and this is most pertinent to this particular video - leather ones are much more common amongst pennsic merchants than ceramic ones.

    Personally, I despise headwear. (On me. You can do what you want. lol) I find most historical and modern headwear looks rather silly and. . .I'd rather not anything but hair be up there!! However. . .I have had to learn to wear hats regardless. With the sun getting fiercer, I burn SO fast, and my hair goes all crispy. So it makes sense to protect oneself from the sun. I've also had health issues that have had my already ridiculously fine hair go thin, so it's had to be chopped short. Putting stuff on my head hides my 'shame'. (Yeah, ok. Not really shame. No one cares nowdays, But the short hair is SO not me, and as thin and fine as it is, it's hard to style it so it does anything that resembles nice. So. . .hat and permanent hat-hair it is, I guess.) And the chemise should be higher in the back than it is in the front. The idea is that gowns are generally higher in the back than they are in the front and that the chemise needs to reflect that to protect the Gown against your skin

    I don't suppose you can recommend somewhere to get the sewing needle for hair? I haven't had time to watch the video just yet but saw a short and i can't quite make out what it's called. Sounded like bodkin (the arrow type?, logpin or lockpin. It's very early right now and I'm going to catch some more Z's so that's probably why I can't understand it 😅 Can't wait to watch the full video 💜

      Bodkin is correct! I purchased mine at pennsic, which may or may not b help you. But as a stopgap, you can actually use a large embroidery needle with a large eye, like the kind used for carpet making.

    Music is relaxing, very relaxing. Is it Korean? And the instrument? Thanks

      That is Indian music and that is a sitar among other instruments. Historical Korean music is not necessarily what most westerners would find very relaxing. 🤣

    Namaste! Tried some sewing again a few days ago. Too bad eyes. Too bad glssaes. Too bad lights. Well two of those problems can be fixed. Forza!

      Indeed, it is even possible to reliably fix bad eyes these days! You just need the right leech! 😀😅

    Thank you for all the wonderful info and tips Contessa! 💕 They track well with my many years of regular camping experience and the one SCA event I’ve camped at! 🏕️ Someday I wish to go to at least one Pennsic, and will certainly say hi if I can 👋 These tips and tricks would apply well to other SCA camping events too! Thank you again for a most informative session! 🥰💕👍

      @catherineleslie-faye4302 I think being a shop clerk would work? They always need people to sit in the booths and accept payments. And I have seen many individuals with Mobility restrictions working in various merchant shops. 😊
