  • Here, I am starting the process of recreating an Italian Renaissance man's overgarment called a giornea, based on an extant garment worn once by the Count of Montella, Diego di Cavaniglia. Enjoy my process! The violent death of a medieval Italian knight has allowed us to better understand 15th-century fashion and how clothing was constructed; here is the start to my own journey to recreate the garments in which he was interred after dying in one of the last crusades to be called, specifically his giornea and farsetto. Here is the story of hius death and rebirth. #patternmaking #handsewing #Florence #medievalclothing #project #sewingproject #MySCA #historicalclothing #medievallivinghistory #sewingtutorial #history

    I'm looking forward to this video series! It makes me want to make fancy clothes for my husband except that he isn't into reenactment. 😂

      I totally understand the desire to dress up one's man like a doll. :-D

    I like that it's part one. 6 minutes is a good length.

      Trying to find the right length can be tricky sometimes! One of my viewers thought that the video had glitched because it ended where it did! 😅

      It's a nice cliff-hangery ending, but it may be beneficial to switch it to a format ala Extra History where you let them know that there is a part 2 coming up next week. I think "shameless self-promotion time" is hurting you on the CZcams platform. Just skip that phrase.

    There is not much on CZcams for men's period clothing construction, especially outside of armor. Underserved niche, albeit I suspect at least partially due to it getting lower views?

      I think it probably has more to do with the fact that most of the Costubers, as they're called, are ladies sewing clothing for themselves. And that most of the men doing medieval historical content are focusing on as you say armor and combat. Many of them seem to forget that clothing is a key part of their armor and that having the proper clothing will actually make the armor work better. I know many practitioners of medieval martial arts wear modern underlayers under their harness.

    Hello Contessa!! I asked you a while ago where you got your background from, and you said you got it on Ebay. I can't find it, so do you have a link for it?

    The original appears to have a short yoke, with the rounded pleats below it. How is the pleated section sewn into the yoke?

    • @thecreativecontessa
      @thecreativecontessa  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I thought that too when I first saw the pictures of the giornea, but it most assuredly does not have a short yoke, or any separate piece. I know it looks that way, but it doesn't. I actually personally chatted with one of the fashion historians who worked on restoring Diego's clothing, Paola Fabbri, and she assured me that the four giornea panels are each cut as one piece, with the pleats forming from the fullness of the Garment. I suspect that they were actually formed by padding and then ironing/steaming the pleats over some sort of form.
