11 Ways to Instantly Get Better Talking to ATC
I learned to fly in the Dallas Class B airspace and it was really intimidating, but now I'm really confident in that airspace. Looking back there were a few things that really helped me in my confidence with air traffic control that I wanted to summarize in this video in case it helps you in your aviation journey.

Why are these go/no-go decisions so easy on paper but so hard sometimes in real life? I almost made a flight a while back that I'm glad I didn't... in retrospect I was frustrated that I was thinking about going for it, but some reflection has helped me realize why it was tempting. You are your own story. Your journey will not perfectly fit anyone else’s. It is definitely worth your time and money if you are passionate about aviation to go get your pilot certificates. I caution anyone looking to pursue a life of aviation to do so with a mindset that this career field that it is not a life of instant gratification like many pilot social media personalities make it out to be. Not saying this video does this. He is very humble and is voiced by his struggles and achievements. I’m talking about the ones that always post “oh yea, get to be an airline pilot in a year or 18 months.” Or the ones that only post amazing pictures all the time. You have to realize the training takes a lot of dedication, physically, emotionally, and financially. Further, aviation is about learning constantly, and it never stops. Those that think getting a license super fast is safe are too naive to realize the true risks that they live around while flying. Training is a balancing act. You should strive to fly more vs less each week and also study as well. The other piece of this is to make time for yourself. Don’t burn yourself out chasing your dream. I’ve seen people go through that flew too much and stopping loving flying. Or those that did it just for the paycheck once at the airlines. I can tell you, it should never just be about money. If it is, I invite you to seek another profession. You will meet a whole spectrum of CFIs out there. Stay away from the ones that are all about themselves, saying “oh I did my training so fast and I can’t wait to make 6 figures.” They are only in it for themselves, not for your learning benefit. Stay away from ones that will fly into any kind of weather. That’s dangerous. Find the ones that are genuine and truly care about your success, and also those that aren’t afraid to cancel a flight if weather is on the edge of being dangerous. Stay away from the pilots that take to social media in a hurry to show the world every video from the cockpit to glorify themselves. Listen to the instructors that are humble and aren’t afraid to say “I don’t know.” It could save your life one day. Best of luck to your pursuit of aviation.

Listening to LiveATC as a student is super helpful, it doesn't take much time. For myself, I started writing down everything I heard in short form (listening to my training airport) and then rewound to see what I got correct. About an hour or so of that everything started clicking in. Try not to be passive about it, writing as you listen really cements it. You'll notice a difference on your next flight.

For what it’s worth I owned a AA1B for almost four years. Sold her two months ago. Was a dream to fly and fairly economical burning 5.5 GPH. Downside was payload and range but my mission was to do primarily local 1-2 hour flights so never had a problem. If your mission is to burn holes in the sky chasing clouds then this may be a plane to consider!

I always dreamed of becoming a pilot but the cost seemed really high, so I put it off. One day I realised I had wasted too much time waiting for all the ducks to line up so I decided to make a radical change and just get started. I started living in my car, to put money towards flying training, knowing that still wouldn't be enough for me to keep up pace. Anyways, along the way help came in different ways, and 3 years later, I got my PPL. Now hour-building towards CPL... I love what you said towards the end there. People don't need to have it all figured out. We often underestimate how much we develop in the process. The more you advance, the more developed you become. The future, more developed you will be better able to figure things out than the now you.

I'm a CFI-I and have a cautionary tale about using the i-Pad for copying clearances. I live in Georgia near Savannah, and the day was really hot at about 100 degrees (just like when I was based for many years at Addison and McKinney) and my Cardinal RG doesn't have AC. Anyway, I was at KSAV waiting to takeoff and wrote my clearance down on my iPad similar to your method you described. Then, I did my run-up and was cleared for immediate take off on RW 01. I pulled out on the runway and rolled around the corner and added the power, lifting smoothly into my climb on RH. Then I looked down at my iPad to confirm my first turn, and my iPad had shut off from the heat and could not be restarted until it cooled down. That took several minutes! I couldn't remember which way they had given me for my turn, and the controller was so busy giving instructions to a wayward pilot who was landing on the wrong runway, I couldn't ask. And another departure had been cleared to take off behind me. So, I just turned right to a heading of 140 as I had been given numerous times previously. But, of course, It turned out that my clearance had a left turn to 240. So, I have decided to never write another clearance down on an iPad. I will always use paper from now on. Paper never shuts down from the heat!!!

This is great stuff, as always. I've made a few no-go decisions while standing at the plane, with a friends who cleared their schedules to fly with me. It always feels bad to deny yourself the opportunity to get off the ground, but it's better than being dead. For those of us who fly as a hobby, the risks need not be taken. And it's good to see how a respectable experienced pilot processes these decisions as well. Thank you for sharing!

I got to fly as a passenger on a few of the very earliest Kodiak 100's in Papua New Guinea. Those were revolutionary at the time because they were a dedicated utility / bush aircraft and really helped modernize the aging fleets of their operators (who had until then been holding on to a bunch of old 206's in lieu of suitable replacement types). Amazing to see how much further the Kodiak design could be pushed. Quest nailed it with the 100, and it's great to see Daher continue that tradition with the 900.
