From a 26 year old CFI/ A&P: The greatest thing I’ve done so far this year is I finally deleted the last of my social media. (Only CZcams now). No more comparing myself to others.
My words of encouragement is this: don’t compare yourself to others, strive to be the greatest and safest pilot/ mechanic you can be, trust the journey, remember your roots, be patient (it’s a lot of work), don’t stop learning, and HAVE FUN!

I've LITERALLY gone through EVERYTHING you mentioned too this winter. Haven't flown in over 2 months. Maintenance is what's been killing me. Regarding the "comparison" issue, I'm sure you feel that pressure significantly more than we do as you are creating content. For me, at least, content consumption is filler for when I can't fly. Frustration around flying is about my circumstances only. While ALL generations have succumbed in some manner to comparing themselves to others (eg "Keeping up with the jones's" is an OLD expression), the younger generations have it 10x worse with social media. I at least was an adult by the time the internet hit the scene and we knew 99% of it were lies and fake- an assumption that still serves me well. "Trust but verify" only works with face to face interactions. For the internet it's more "Distrust UNTIL you can verify". Your advice is solid and the video is appreciated. We need to stop living as if the present is the norm. "This too shall pass" gets me through almost any hard time. It ALL passes. It's not fun. You may wish the situation never happened... but it did... but it will pass. Keep controlling what YOU can control and move forward.

You are not alone. Working on my private the past few months has been frustrating. Weather is a major factor, but regular life gets in the way. Your practical approach to self analysis and mental health is interesting to me. Having a spreadsheet to track your input and output is an eye opener to me. Never thought of it. Will give it a try.

Resonates 100%. I've been working on my IFR and had really hoped to have it by the end of 2023. Two mechanical issues, getting COVID, a long annual, and shitty weather have meant I've only gotten a few hours of instruction in the last four months. I'm sitting here now 2.5 CFII Sim Instrument hours away from checkride and now my CFII is out of town. It's hard to be patient and not compare yourself to others but I'm trying.

182 owner myself and I am a subscriber to your channel because of that. I was logging a couple of biz trips last week and noticed I didn't fly once in January. I thought about that for a few minutes and reflected on what I had learned in the past month. I had re-read a few of my flight manual supplements and learned a few things on my Aerocruze AP that I didn't know how to do. My point is: even though I might not be flying I am still learning, and felt good about that.
    Hope this perspective helps!!

This doesn't just happen with flying. When I got my license back in 2004, I really struggled with periods of bad weather. Then I had one of the scariest experiences of my life. My son and I were itching to get from Nashua, NH to Philly, and got to the airport to find the plane we were renting (182RG) covered in snow. It took a couple hours to get it cleaned off and heated up. While I was doing my preflight, I asked my son to add a quart of oil, and between us we left the cap off after he filled it. My fault - I was the PIC. As we took off, I got a windshield full of oil and had to declare an emergency and land in a slip so I could see out the side window to line up on the landing. The problem was the rush that was induced by not having flown for a while and it created a stupid emergency. I learned from that incident that you have to be extremely vigilant about allowing yourself to get too caught up in the emotion of missing out on doing what you want to do.
I have had the same sort of experiences riding my motorcycle or taking the motorhome out. Being aware of the rush to fulfill a desire is essential, especially when you are taking a calculated risk with something like flying or riding a motorcycle.

So good to see your encouraging CZcams video. I have not flown in SIX MONTHS!!!! Four of those months I was out of the country teaching. Since I've been back, my plane has been in the shop getting avionics upgrades. However, I have been studying. Later this week I will take the Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) written. Hopefully, next week my plane will be ready and I'll resume IFR training. All this is to say that, even when we can't fly, we can continue to learn. Keep the videos coming. You are a keeper!

Stumbled on your channel. Fully relatable. All non-pro pilots will experience this.
That said let’s get hard core honest for a minute. If you couldn’t go out and fly a private pilot checkride tomorrow, you are not proficient enough to meet the MINIMUM safety standard for your certificate.
With that in mind, does that deprioritize other things in your life to maintain your proficiency for taking your family or other passengers aloft?
Having flown non professionally other than as a CFI since the 90s, I see the proficiency level of recreational pilots at Flight Reviews. Some understand the checkride was a MINIMUM standard and some don’t.
This was the number one concept I learned over all these years from a former Naval Aviator and lifelong CFI.
    Don’t accept minimum standards.
You’re either taking a flying break and planning your recovery to at least MINIMUM standards with a CFI, or you’re maintaining well above MINIMUM proficiency. The shadowy inbetween is where recreational pilots - some of them CZcamsrs (having a podcast or CZcams channel doesn’t factor into your personal proficiency whatsoever) who have harmed themselves and others - get hurt. Bad.
Make a decision. Prioritize proficiency today. Above all else. Or officially take a break and return to recreational flying when you can commit to it.
Tough words. I know. Been there. Done it. Multiple times. All intended in care and love.
Don’t be the pilot who couldn’t pass a checkride tomorrow loading the airplane to the gills with immediate family and blasting off on a trip. Just don’t.
Triple don’t if you fly a twin.
I’ve seen it hurt people. Bad.
    Cheers. Go fly!

Oh man! This video felt like a hug. Me, I’ve had a pretty unique and different ride when it comes to aviation, I have struggled with everything more than anyone I know. I have been trying to finish my hours for 6 years, maybe 7. Since I’m the only one that supports me financially I haven’t had a smooth ride and there has been a lot of setbacks. I try to learn from each one and make the most of it by studying theory and regrouping but it’s hard not compare myself with others that fly many times a week and maybe finish flight training in a year, when it’s taken me almost a decade. But seeing that we all have struggles and we all have a different journey truly feels like I’m not alone and that is completely worth it. I’ve never given up and I never will.

I am a VFR only Microlight (fix wing) pilot in the UK. I have managed to only fly 2 hours this year in Jan and am now at the point that I feel like I need to fly with an instructor for 1 or 2 hours to shake off the rust/combat the skill fade. Due to work and aircraft availability that won't be until March.
I have had flights planned every weekend for the past 4 weeks but mainly due to weather and even because the airfield (Barton EGCB) was closed due to water logged grass runways, I have had to cancel one flight after another. Very frustrating :(

This winter seems to be one of the worst for flying, I’m currently working on my Instrument Rating and I’m finding out how quickly my scan goes away (I’m 64yo though) I treat the no go days as part of my training as well, patience is a virtue!! I have had some of those setbacks myself recently. Here in southeast Michigan we had a several week period of IFR or low IFR weather combined with freezing temperatures. The weather finally improved but it's still spotty--it's absolutely beautiful right now but I'm stuck at my desk doing the job that pays for fuel so no flying for me today--and we're supposed to return to cloudy and cold conditions by the weekend. To top it off my plane is about to go in for annual and there are a couple of large items that I'll be having taken care of so the annual will take longer than it would in a mythical perfect world where inspections never raise issues and there are never any squawks. But if there is ever a good time for maintenance setbacks it's this time of year. I'm cautiously optimistic that spring, summer, and autumn will provide me with much better weather and that the maintenance I'm taking care of now will leave me with a plane that is ready to fly whenever I am.

The last time I flew was in October 2017. My setback came in early 2018 when I lost a very good paying job, was unemployed for 8 months, and when I finally got a job it paid over $20K less per year than I was making (despite being the best paying place in the region for the type of work I could do aside from the place where I lost my job). After my mortgage and expenses I was literally just breaking even each month, and on top of that during the plague every flight school within 50 miles of me closed down so even if I could afford it there's nowhere to rent. Affording an airplane is out of the question, so all my knowledge of aviation has been stagnating and fading in my memory. Lack of money to afford flying anymore is the biggest hurdle.

Not the only facing weather issues; I fly once a week, and January essentially was a trash month. Currently prepping for solo, and flying with the chief CFI before, she is tough as nails. I'll admit she's cracked me before, and she had to remind me to be kind to myself (had the mindset, one wrong move and the maneuver is failed). Probably over the last couple of months, I've started to realize the "it's not a 100-yard dash, but a marathon" to help ground myself.
Regardless, over the past couple years, I've learned so much, and a prior CFI recommend that I get my Advanced Ground Instructor rating (no problem passing). I've also had the opportunity to teach the aviation merit badge to ~40 scouts (using foreflight, nearly everyone wanted to download it). After teaching, I legitamilty felt I did a good teaching, being able to apply what I've learned so far, to help the next generation get interested in aviation.

This sounds A LOT like me during the last year. Struggled to fly the last year mostly because of weather. The summers were super windy and the winters were just constant rain all the time. Add to that aircraft availability with planes being fully booked weeks in advance and maintenance issues on the planes and one plane also almost getting written off. There were times that I didn't fly for over 2 months because of this. Illness, instructors leaving for the airlines and flight schools just being too busy or unable to help you has also been frustrating. I was hoping to have my CPL and IR by now, but I'm still far away from that. I now moved to flight school with better weather and more airplanes so we'll see what happens.

Hey, worry less! Here is what a lot of owners underestimate: maintenance. My own aircraft is on extended annual/upgrade. Prop went for overhaul mid Nov 2023 and is just back. Few avionic upgrades and its going to take days to sort out. Also working on two other aircraft with avionic upgrades. One is over 100 hours in and the other is going to be worse. We are flying vintage machines. If they were cars we would only go to shows on dry days! Other set backs to overcome: rebuilding an aircraft after it hit power lines! Rebuilding an aircraft that was never built correctly the first time round! Motto: if it was easy, everyone would be doing it! It’s all worthwhile when you’re off terra firma!

I think the most important thing is not to put too much pressure on yourself, I'm working long hours farming at the moment and have just told myself, look work has to come first, and flying will have to go on the back burner. When I'm ready to get back in the air after a break I'll get my instructor to come up with me and do some refresher training. General aviation is not commercial where refresher/currency training is provided all the time so you should budget for that as a private pilot, the money I spent with my instructor working on crosswinds was well worth it

You are definitely not alone my good friend! We all go through difficult time like today. I just got a letter from FAA saying that I have to send back all my medical exams to be reviewed after they granted me with a third class medical for over a year, so I’m thinking why did I get the third class MEDICAL and now they want to review it? For the record this is now the fourth time this happened before I got my PPL. They set me back for whole entire year waiting for them to exam my medical records twice a setback that cost me thousands of dollars because I had to do the PPL course twice, but as we all know, God is in control and there’s ways of learning from the past that these times of trouble won’t last. Stay strong my friend. God bless you.

From my perspective southeast on I-45 from you, I'm a little frustrated that, since earning my Instrument Rating in August, the weather when I schedule a flight (I still rent) has either been well below my personal new-to-IFR minimums (or flat-out below even Low IFR), or "clear and a million." I'm maintaining currency by flying with a safety pilot, but it would be nice to get some real IMC time. On a positive note, I flew my 100th Young Eagle in December and about 10% of the YE kids I've flown over the past four years have gone on to pursue their Private Pilot Certificate and some are closing in on ATP and hoping to fly for the airlines. You have a lot of people out here who enjoy your videos and appreciate what you do.

Mee too!! Big set back in november-december-january due to bad weather and lack of available DPE (I was ready to do my PPL checkride since mid-november 2023, and still haven't done it yet...)... I felt discouraged cuz wx was shit again back from the holidays and i was running pretty low on money... But fortunately talked with some friends and my instructor also encouraged me to get back at it once wx improves and after some nice practice flights I'm ready again for my checkride! Lack of DPE is unfortunate and we cannot do anything about, so like Charlie said just focusing on my inputs for now fly regularly and hopefully have an appointment shortly 😊Let's go everyone!

Literally can relate so much to this as a new pilot. In September I got my LAPL (European light aircraft license) and I still haven’t gotten the chance to fly with it yet, which may sound really surprising. But because of reasons from the Irish weather flooding the grass runway to being busy with school, it’s just been almost impossible to get a flight in. It kills me but I hope I can get to use my licence soon

Yeah...setbacks. I'm probably closer in age to your dad, but, I'm trying to advance a retirement career in flying. It (meaning the setbacks...) started with the six month annual I sat through while a paperwork snag got sorted out on the new to me Cherokee I bought....then, here in Southern Ontario - as with much of the Northeastern US we had to deal with forest fire smoke, zero visibilities on otherwise perfectly clear days! Even the night hours were unflyable?!?!?!
Then came the onset of winter - we haven't had one. Living in the Great Lakes basin, most folks will tell you; once the lakes get some ice on them the weather will be cold as hell, but clear and pretty...nope. No ice, temps in the 5⁰-10⁰ C range have meant low ceilings, fog, mist and drizzle...and a lot of rain. My flying hours for the year period are off by 30% from a year ago...maybe more if I actually do the math-and time is ticking. If I ever hope to get paid for doing this thing called aviation, I have to knock off the multi/instrument ratings ASAP...at the end of the day, I'll be able to say I owned an airplane and flew it around a fair bit...head down, plow forward, aim high-what's the alternative?

Your videos and the experiences of other pilots have been inspiring. No matter what your aviation goals are, whether it's becoming an airline pilot or plan on serving in the Air Force like me, don't give up. Life is a marathon, not a sprint, and we all have our own pace. Remember, everyone's journey is unique, so don't compare yourself to others. All you men are lucky. I have not piloted in 40+ years and then found out to get up and running I’d have to rerun lessons but worse is getting a special issuance medical. After an exam the medical examiner said I’d need a review by FAA. She sent the reports I had in…..I needed more. However when the FAA contacted me and said send those same papers in again I told them I’m not going to pursue a medical. Too much bureaucracy. We can all pay our taxes but get little personal help.

Here’s one for me Charlie: I’ve been an aviation nerd my entire (41 year old) life. I grew up memorizing every spec on every civilian and military plane I could find. Both grandfathers were flight instructors in the Army Air-core in WW2. It runs in my blood. I’m STILL not a pilot. The only thing preventing me from pulling the trigger on something I’ve wanted to do for decades is the cost of ownership of even the most basic plane! I don’t want my PPL just to say I’m a pilot. I want to be able to fly MY plane. I get I could continue to rent after my cert, but I travel for work. I’m on planes every week; most flights under 500 NM. Renting isn’t a cost-effective way to fly myself to work. I understand flying isn’t for everyone, but short of being a millionaire, the GA community seems to be mostly off-limits to average people. End-rant.

Every year I look at the number of hours I've flown and think, how could I fly so little! Weather and maintenance issues were huge in reducing my flying. It's either too hot (AZ) or too cold, or too windy. Plus, we were gone about seven weeks of the summer! Then, I had my magnetos rebuilt and had a nagging problem with one of them. Before I knew it, the year was over and I hadn't flown much. And, don't even talk about the high price of aviation fuel!! Yikes! Weather affects my personal health, too. I can't get out and ride my bicycle as much as I'd like. So, I end up walking more, which isn't good for my back. It does seem like you can't win sometimes. But that's life. You struggle and struggle to live, but eventually we all die.

Almost feels ridiculous to say it, but there are times I get scared to death of flying. I have 250 hours, hundreds of landings, an instrument rating and over the two years I’ve been flying I’ve had tons of successes. But even so, when my reservation time comes up, I get super nervous. I feel like a chump showing up at the flight school I rent from, being around all the seasoned pilots there, and so on. Big time impostor syndrome. But eventually I overcome it and I’m always glad I did and I feel reinvigorated until the next time. Why the heck does this happen?

@@AirplaneAcademy - I'd say it's mostly Impostor Syndrome, with a little inconsistent self-confidence peppered in. When I flew more often - during my PPL and IFR trainings - I felt more confident than I do now that I only fly a couple of times per month. Just hearing you say "you're not alone" helps tremendously, because you're certainly one of the people I'd consider to be highly skilled and confident. Haven’t flown in 6mo due to financial issues after wrapping up my IFR rating last year. It hurts to look at my logbook and know I’m on hold for now. Setback? Maybe. The desire for maintaining proficiency vs being legal & the craving for flying more than less more often succumbs to both life events & weather. It's a burden most GA pilots face & maybe more so of GA aircraft owner/pilots. Although maybe expressed differently by others, it's most likely a common experience by many. Still in the overall view of GA flying, it's all about being flexible. When faced with this delima, remind yourself of the privilege.
