Hi Anthony, Am I correct in thinking that sulphuric acid could be added directly into the aqueous copper nitrate solution and that this might save a step as well as yield significantly more nitric acid? This should allow one to reclaim the maximum amount of nitric acid. And, ending with copper sulphate is desirable as it can easily be converted back into pure copper and sulphuric acid using electrolysis. Please let me know if I am overlooking anything. BTW; I am so glad to have found your channel. You are the first person I have seen on CZcams that has given any consideration to reclaiming acid as well as the various base metals. A couple more thoughts on things to consider and ways to improve this process: First, do you actually have a need for fuming nitric acid? I haven't seen any example of a process in refining gold, silver, or copper that doesn't work with dilute nitric, and many seem to absolutely require it. Given the effort, expense, and severely increased danger of working with fuming nitric, I would avoid it entirely unless I had a specific need for it. Secondly, if you want to convert dilute nitric into sodium nitrate, lye seems like a poor choice of reagent to me. Sodium carbonate (washing soda or ph-Up for pools) and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) are both substantially cheaper, easier to find, and safer to work with than sodium hydroxide. They also both provide a nice, visible indication that you've reached your endpoint when they stop creating carbon dioxide bubbles on addition. Third, since you always have a need for dilute nitric in your refining, I would recommend skipping the conversion step entirely. Just save the cost of the lye and put it toward buying more nitrate salts if you need to produce fuming nitric instead of converting the stuff that you already have ready to use in other operations. Keep up the good work, and thank you for sharing your processes with us. I love that this community is getting more quality content producers who are working to refine (pun intended) these techniques. 😊

Humbly and with great respect, I confirm your thanking NurdRage. I too have enjoyed and learned much from his work. As an absolute amature in the metal refining scene. So, after having used the method you show many times before your video i would politely add my own findings. In my own case I learned the following the expensive way.... 1/ the left over salts in the reaction chamber can and will destroy the chamber if left to go cold and reheated with water to clean because of uneven heating, as nurd warns of in his video.( scratch one reaction vessel) As the salts are very hot, it's difficult to pour them out safely before they set. 2/ if you overdrive this reaction you may experience a boilover, which results in a solid salt mass forming in your condensor, this results in a pressure build up in your reaction vessel. Dependind on your apparatus, you might end up with high pressure breakage and very hot salts ejecting. (Blocked condensor of your type is very hard to unblock, Graham). 3, Any small amount of nitric acid generated comes at a massive electric and chemical cost, with risk to equipment and health, at a far higher concentration to be safe to you or required to conduct silver refining anyway. I have enjoyed this channel and can learn too. I don't post videos. I refine gold and silver and sell it on an amature basis. I can see that it's possible to make extra money setting up a channel and posting videos of my work to increase my earnings. However i dont want to be responsible for ignorantly posting chemical reactions that I don't understand and causing injury to others who may be more ignorant than me even. I wouldn't want to have the pressure of posting regular videos to keep the channel alive and the money coming...... Eventhough it's up to others to do their own research. All the best and thanks.

As cheap as sulfuric acid is compared to nitric acid, it seems like you'd just be better off buying that and distilling your nitric acid right from a nitrate salt. This method is nice if these reagents are all someone could get, or they have a bunch already on hand, but between the low yield, and the high price--I'm just wondering exactly how much it would cost to make, say 1L of 70% nitric acid, considering that can be purchased as-is for around $100. Even less would be buying a gallon of sulfuric acid drain cleaner for about $20 and using it on the copper nitrate or mixed nitrate waste products, and then electrolyzing the sulfates to recover the metal and the sulfuric acid. I've heard of people doing dry pyrolysis of Copper Nitrate directly to nitric acid but with low yields.

Good point. The only chemicals I purchased to make this video were the sodium bisulfate monohydrate and the sodium hydroxide. Everything else is recycled waste from the 4 Horsemen cells. I don't typically use this method for bulk extraction. I use sulfuric acid, which that video is coming up next. @@CamRStanford Nurdrage has a great video where he compares yields on several methods of producing nitric using sodium bisulfate. He got a 97% efficient yield out of his nitrate salts doing this dry method by using an excess of the sodium bisulfate. I just checked prices at my local Walmart a few days ago, and the 5-lb bag of sodium bisulfate (Chlorox ph-Down for pools) was under $10, while a half gallon of sulfuric drain cleaner was $20. For me, that would make the dry chemical method substantially more cost effective. If you're able to buy sulfuric acid for $20 a gallon, though, that obviously cuts the savings substantially.

@@monadnockgems I have no idea how rhodium would react. I've always just seen platinum and lead dioxide offered as the two possible choices in all of the sulfate-based electrolysis examples I've seen. I wanted to point out the other option knew would work. I meant to reply to @readoryx373 originally, since they were asking for an alternative for the anode. Forgot to tag them.
