IRON WILL WIDE SINGLE BEVEL 125 gr BROADHEAD TEST
This is a test of the 125 gr Wide Single Bevel Broadhead by Iron Will.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 17 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a score of 22. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 16.03 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.125" = 5.95 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.125”=5.95 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.375" = 4.125 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 19.72 pts)
Initial sharpness 9%, 107 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts +.93 bonus = 9.93 pts & Edge Retention (9%, +34 grams = 9.32/10 = 8.39 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10= 1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 16.75 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (8" = 8.89 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score. (55 layers= 7.86 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.88 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.75/10 = 4.88 pt)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
Bonus:
+.55 pts Extra thick blades (.062")
TOTAL SCORE: 89.93 pts = 10 Golden Arrows (rounded up)
Price: $43.33/head

    I'm curious why you shoot the broadheads into concrete. Any metal that can withstand that will have properties that make it suboptimal for cutting through tissue and bone.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures Před 13 hodinami

      Well, honestly, that is just not true. If you look at the incredible sharpness of this iron will, for example. And you see the A2 tool steel it’s made out of. And it did very well with the concrete. Why would you say that is sub optimal? The type of steel that’s used in a broadhead is only one factor affecting durability. The way it is hardened alsoaffects it. And the geometric design also affects the structural integrity tremendously. So the concrete test is a good test to see if and how a Broadhead may fail on a very hard impact. If it can handle that, just imagine how well it could handle an animal. That being said, the concrete test only accounts for 3% of the total score. I certainly don’t consider it a pass fail test for a Broadhead. But if I have to choose one, Broadhead that can handle a shot into cinderblock, and one that cannot. All other things equal, I know which one I’ll choose for my hard earned shot on an animal.

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures Well said. It seems to me toughness and hardness would be serious factors when hitting strong bones.

    • @ThirdLawPair
      @ThirdLawPair Před 46 minutami

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures This is due to the tradeoffs present in the metallurgy and geometry. A very novice approach to think of blade design is that if it can withstand an extreme test then it should excel at its intended use. A good book worth reading is "Knife Engineering" by Dr. Larrin Thommas. For the metallurgy component, there is a tradeoff between hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Even when you have a nice mid-grade steel like A2, the heat treating processes can either maximize hardness or toughness, not both. If you increase the toughness to go beyond the intended use of the blade, it will have lower hardness. The same is true if you did an extreme test for corrosion resistance. If you were to soak it in vinegar for a month and expect no spots of rust, you would need an extremely high-alloy steel with very poor edge retention qualities. Likewise with the geometry. To survive the concrete test, it needs a very wide primary grind and working edge. Edge geometry has an even bigger effect on blade performance than the metallurgy does. That is why blades are designed with a grind angle to match the exact task it will be used for. When blades are designed to pass a test rather than designed to perform the intended task, they perform more poorly as a result.

    Highly impressive head. This video is a great example of why gel and other solid media penetration tests don't reflect penetration on animals. As much as I love Sevr's, there is no way they will out penetrate an Iron Will wide on an animal even though they beat it in Lusk's test. (Various model Sever's out penetrated the IW on cardboard and gel)

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures Před 21 hodinou

      Well, I agree in part. No homogenous test mediums can accurately replicate an animal, because animals have various mediums within them as well. This head has a fairly wide cut, with much greater surface area, and also thicker blades. That's creating greater friction and resisting penetration. In dryer mediums, like bone and hide and some tougher tissue, penetration will also be reduced by that friction. And a larger bevel like in the Sevr, often opens up a channel for the arrow shaft to pass thru more readily, compared to two blade predominant heads. But in more liquid based mediums, like bloody tissue, penetration will not be so hindered by those factors and heads like this may penetrate more effectively. It's a mixed bag.

    Hey man thanks for your great reviews. After being inspired by your videos I decided to use the sevr 1.5 on a nice bull moose in northern Ontario last year. I’m heading back up this year. After your testing would you lean towards these new hybrids instead of the 1.5s for a large animal like a moose?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures Před dnem

      Good question. It largely depends on your set up and shot distance. It takes more oomph to drive it deeply. If your goal is maximum penetration, the 1.5 is best. If you have plenty of momentum, then the 1.5 Hybrid would be great.

      Thanks. The last moose was a 51” I hit him with my compound at 20yds and 50yds. Dropped in front of my eyes within 30 seconds. Neither shot passed through but lodged in the hide on his opposite side.

    They should make the whole tip a small single bevel.

      @LuskArcheryAdventures honestly I have no idea. Maybe best of both worlds. Bevel the mechanical blades too. Do not know until you try.

    Man I appreciate and respect your testings. Your testings is what pushed me towards sevr’s. Between my son, daughter and myself we harvested a lot of deer last year with our crossbows using sevr’s. Great blood trails. We love them and ill never shoot anything else

      That's great to hear. I used them with a crossbow a month ago on hogs and they worked excellently--they fly SOOO well.

  • @southdakotasaved126

    You just made my day… once again! 😂 I’M ordering these as soon as I can to add to my Hyde’s that I also ordered thanks to you, In our previous correspondence I said I love the Sevrs performance but just not comfortable with a 2 blade after years of 2 blade sub performance IMO over many years of use with my traditional bows, next thing I know, SUPRISE, here is Sevr with a 4 blade, that makes them near perfect in an imperfect world! Once again, thanks so much for your channel! God Bless! 😃

      @LuskArcheryAdventures Před 3 dny

      It depends on what I’m hunting. For deer sized game, yep. For much larger animals I like the penetration of the 1.5.

  • @yourmomma2995
    @yourmomma2995 Před 4 dny

    adding a tiny bleeder just seems like a a gimmick, why wouldn't one just go with the 1.75" if they wanted a little more cut than the 1.5" ? more exposed surface area in flight is NEVER a good thing.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures Před 3 dny

      Well they fly exceptionally well. Did you watch the video? The longer the blades, the longer the head. They have a hard time adding the weight to the 1.75s. That’s why they’re only in 1.5 and only at 125 grs.

    • @yourmomma2995
      @yourmomma2995 Před 3 dny

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures yes i watched the whole video, we all know for a fact that having more exposed surface area in a broadhead is not ideal. i have never seen a difference in flight from using a shorter head vs a longer head of the same weight. but i have seen more surface area heads mess with flight like everyone has. this one is still small enough to fly well, but we all know that the original without the added bleeder will fly better over long distance and in wind. there is no way to deny that fact.
