- This is a test of the 125 gr Slick Trick Standard.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 21 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 14.2 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2" = 5.6 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2” = 5.6 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1" = 3 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 17.92 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 166 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +82 grams = 8.36/10 = 7.52 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 18.71 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (9.25" = 10 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 61 layers= 8.71 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.88 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.75/10 = 4.88 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS:
+..34 pts sharpness greater than baseline
+.28 pts Pen 1 better than baseline
TOTAL SCORE: 92.33 pts = 10 Golden Arrows
Price: $12.50/head

Only one broadhead better than a slick trick & thats another slick trick👍
Haha
Which slicktrick is better? I use the magnum the grizztrick.
Great old classic heavy duty, accurate broadhead that leaves a big hole. It's as good today as when it was introduced. The Slick Trick Standard and the QAD Exodus are 2 of my favorite double bevel blade broadheads.
Yep.
Slick Trick makes a great broadhead. I'm currently using the Viper Tricks and like them alot. I used the Magnums in the past and liked those as well. Might give the standards a try in the near future. Good video!
Thanks for sharing that.
Been shooting slick tricks since 2015 mainly standard or magnum. It’s good to see people giving them credit… also 4 broadheads for the price of 3
Yep
I hunted with them a long time ago as well, excited to watch this review. Keep up the great work!
Thank you
Same, switched to exodus after the blades chipped on shoulder shot moose
Another great test!I Been using both slicktrick standards and mags for many years and still have them in my quiver along with qad exodus.I never had one break a blade or bend a ferrule yet.I have no reason to switch even though i am tempted with all the great new broadheads coming out every year.
Yep
Great head, used them for a couple of years.Because of the smaller cut size I moved on to other heads.
Yep. I did the same.
Thanks for working in some resharpening info on the heads you test lately. So few people seem to understand that ANY dull blade can be sharpened.
Yep
Garry knew what he was doing with this head! I have an interesting story about them when he first go started, LOL great job as always
Right? Thanks Chris.
Great looking broad head!
Yep
I would be very interested to see the SIK F3 broadheads again in your 2024 testing and scoring. I bet the accuracy with the crossbow would be just incredible just like these were. I use SIK F3 broadheads and I trust this broadhead brand. Like you said in the F3 video sometimes innovation works where others fall short! I see you’re bringing back a lot of classics and retesting so I hope these are on your list. Love the channel and the content so thank you!
Thank you. If someone sends me a pack, I’ll gladly test them. I’ve tapped out my broadhead budget
John i was at the ATA show when they were first introduced ans thought they would be a great head. I was probably using the muzzy 90 grain 4 blade back then. Great testing as us!
Nice.
Really good results for a broadhead that has been on the market so long. Slick Trick knew what they were doing.
Yes indeed
you should discuss in each video. where the broadhead lands in terms of scoring and performance.
you mentioned the Slick Trick scored very high, maybe talk about the ones that performed better, or just a tad worse.
would be interesting to know. great video as always!
Thank you. It’s hard to do that, Because I test so many different heads. But at the end of the year, I always share an excel spreadsheet with all of the scores from that year and the previous years that I’ve used this scoring system. You can find that spreadsheet in the video description of the last video of 2023.
Beast of an old broadhead! I never did try these, but I tried Muzzy four blader’s in 90 grain. Never got great blood trails and also a four blade 1 inch diameter broadhead. I still would take a big cutting expandable over them all day long, even though it’s a great broadhead.
Yep
Shot these for a few years. Very solid head construction wise. My problem with them was the complete lack of blood trails for some reason even with excellent shot placement. Really made no sense to me but it happened enough times that I changed and never looked back. Recovered all deer shot with them but some difficult trails to follow.
Bloodletting is all about what vessels or arteries you cut. A wider cut has a better chance of slicing through an artery. But these do cut a lot of tissue, just with a smaller diameter.
Great head
Yep
I shot the original magnums. I would keep my practice head in my quiver and then out of my treestand I would pick a leaf on the ground and shoot it before I came down. After a season of being shot into the ground it was still in amazing shape. They did great on deer too.
Nice
Pretty sure I’ll still be hunting with these heads until the last hunt I’m fortunate enough to go on. Been using them for years and have never been disappointed.
Nice.
Looking forward to the new 3 blade tooth of the arrow review. Although i really hope they come out with a bigger cut diameter for whitetails. Looks good…i have the XL 4 blade. But i opted to go with the Hades Pro this year. Think i need better steering for vane selection. I have 3 fletch 2.25” TAV drivers on VAP SS .166….shoulda went with the 2.75” vanes
Thank you
My favorite head for turkeys. I’ve had so many pass through hits on them using this one. I do consider it a one time use head as the blades can be deformed or chipped fairly easily. That’s why you buy replacement blades. 👍👍
Thanks for sharing that.
Slick Trick, QAD exodus, Magnus stinger, Tooth of the Arrow and Rocky mountain Cuththroat are my go tos.. my priorities are Accuracy, Penetration, and toughness (is it gonna explode/deflect if it hits bone?)... i dont care about blade retention, i sharpen or replace blades after every use (except target practice)
And retention is even more important than initial sharpness. Many broadheads are super sharp out of the package, but our Dell by the time they impact the Hyde. But Ed retention affects the cutting throughout the entire animal. An edge integrity plays a huge role in penetration. Edge chatter hinders penetration
That thing spun more true after the concrete block than before.
Haha. I noticed that.
John love what you do. Are you going to do the new 3 blade tooth of the arrow?
Thank you. Yeah I have them now. But they are in my next batch of 30 heads to test. I have videos scheduled to drop through May. Then I will start posting this next batch. I have not begun testing the next batch yet. But I will do so soon.
Slick trick mag 125 will be my head this year.
Nice. That test is coming.
I’ve always had good luck with slick tricks. I’ve used expensive heads that got the same result as a $10 per slick trick.
Yep
The original Magnum appeared in 2000. The Standard (2005) is the exact same ferrule with 1" blades instead of 1 1/8" blades. Slick Trick 100/125 grain Xbow is simply the Magnum. Ferrules are identical for all three , & Magnum or Standard blades work in all.
Thanks for sharing that
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Thanks for the testing! 2010 Xbow was a 2000 Magnum put in a different package, but they did add a 150 grain ferrule option. I forgot to mention that. 1" & 1 1/8" blades work in all of them regardless of what you buy.
Been using standard and mags since 2008. I've been tempted to buy the new or flashy kids on the block, but why? Virtually nothing to gain and higher price. Testing like this helps me remember how amazing slick tricks are even after all these years.
Yep
Iv used these a long time ago... I always prefer the grizz trick or x bow 150 trick wich is basically just a magnum
Yep. I will be testing those as well.
@LuskArcheryAdventures right on there solid heads for sure I mainly just run cross bows I lost my right eye in a accident and I'm right handed so swapped over to shooting left handed making the switch with a rifle was easier not so much with compounds longbow ect. Now I just run a tenpoint point 505 nitro and stealth 450, been looking at a siege 425 as well just cause lol how you liking your swat x1?
One of the most overlooked quality broadheads of all time
I’ll take a exodus any day of the week
Yep
is there a spread sheet for all the broadheads you tested? or does one have to go through the hundred videos you have made? appreciate the work you have done making sure each broadhead is tested equally
I post a spread sheet in the last vid of each year, summarizing the tests of that year. You can find that here on my channel.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures must of missed that thanks!
Hello Mr. Lusk,
I sent the broadheads I was telling you about a pack of 12 from Amazon. If you need more information about them please let me know.
Thank you Kendall
Thank you, Kendall! I do not have any information on those broadheads. Can you please send me the link? My email is johnlusk64@gmail.com
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I sent an email to you
No experience with this vintage broadhead. Did amazing on the test. I just don't pay that much for a replaceable broadhead and usually shoot at least 150 grain or heavier. 4 edge tip splits the bone in two directions which is better than a 3 blade that tries to split a bone in three directions.
They’re one of the more inexpensive heads on the market.
They’re one of the lesser expensive heads on the market.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures
Lord have mercy I’m getting old. Slick Tricks are now vintage. lol
Any reason you aren't shooting a more typical crossbow arrow in the 400-450 gr total weigh range? That would have your speed up to where the flight characteristics are going to be a lot more sensitive.
Good question. I experimented with a lot of different weights and distances. I wanted to find one that would most accurately Minnick the speed at which a compound bow is shot. But with a crossbow, I have the advantage of it being on a mounted rest with a scope, to eliminate much more human error.so the weight I use generates the speed of about 300 ft./s. And the results are actually very similar to the results. I’ve gotten in all my other flight testing over the years, but are much more consistent with the crossbow.
John why is it that when you shoot a fixed head into the layered cardboard we don’t see cutting from the blades on impact? Just a punch hole basically. I get that with the mechanicals but I’ve often wondered why the fixed don’t show the slicing immediately. Kudos on another great test, and apparently a great head. I have never played with Slick Trick, even though they’ve been around for a long time. it would be nice to see them make an inch and a quarter to an inch and a half diameter head. Also, how are you liking that X1 Crossbow? It’s on my list.
Well, with a fix blade head, it’s a given that the Cut in the cardboard is going to be the same size as the blade themselves. I just showed the final layer that the broadhead penetrated up until or through. It’s just because that’s what the test is for, to show the depth of penetration via the number of layers.
And I am really loving the SWAT X1! It’s so fun to shoot.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Thanks for the clarification. I was really scratching my head on that one lol. Good to hear you’re liking the X1. Seems to be most people’s opinions
Slick trick changed ownership a few years back correct? Is the quality as good as it used to be? Going from this test it certainly looks like it.
They were purchased by the Outdoor group. The ones I’ve tested are with the new ownership. And they’ve done very well.
What is the highest scoring fixed blade broadhead?
This one is one of them. You can see the score sheet for the past 2 years on the last video I posted in 2023. You can rank them all in any way you want on the excel spreadsheet
Just a fyi. That heavy bolt may fly n penetrate great! But thr average crossbow hunter is shooting 400-500 grains total at over 400fps.
I disagree your Xbox better be rated at 450 or better for that
Yes, I understand that. The the reason I am using a crossbow is to have a more controlled, accurate, consistent platform to test the flight of the Broadheads. I am purposely using a heavy bolt to reduce the weight to compound bow speeds. That way it is a more relevant test for vertical bow shooters. and that is my target audience. In the past, I just shot them through my vertical bow, but that is nowhere near as consistent as using a mounted crossbow with a scope.
Almost makes me wonder why I'm buying more expensive broadheads lol.....just a classic head.
:)
Sometimes that old technology is still superior to others.
:)
Haven't seen it yet but I asked my self why test a proven killer lol
Definetly what I thought would happen did I always liked the square hole killed some game for me for sure
:)
Puts the exodus to shame.
I like the wider cut and stronger blades of an exodus. But they’re both solid heads
Never a fan of BHs that have to be put together. I tried these out and didn’t like how they didn’t fit flush into my insert.
But that said, I have friends that are legit killers and live by these BHs
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Ranch fairy 3 blade please
I’d be happy to, if someone sends me a pack
“Accuracy test” at that range using a heavy crossbow bolt? Not a very great test of accuracy.
I think it is. I was using my compound bow at 30 yards for accuracy testing. But I could not rule out human error as much as I can with a crossbow. So I shoot it at compound bow speeds, yet can benefit with the scope, and tripod, and accuracy of the crossbow itself. So it is a much more consistent way to compare the flights of the Broadheads with the field point. The only variable that changes the flight is the Broadhead and not any human error.
