    Great video, lots of good info, especially the VFO servicing. My 901DM is 46 years old now, June '78 build and the VFO is getting a bit lumpy. Also got issues tuning up on 40. Loading control won't peak. Just keeps rising all the way to position 10 on the scale. l hope yours is now working 100%. Thanks for posting. 73 de Keith

    I bought one FT 910D back in January. Seems the Attenuator Switch is pretty much broken. If it is half depressed I have a good reception, in any other position I have nearly no reception. And the S-Meter doesn't display how much output I have. I will trace all the cables and see if I can get the 901 back to service. On the good side: VFO is stable and not drifting, dial is smooth output is around 80Watts, but without a proper readout I won't try more. Any tipps are higly appreciated.

      Hi Andre, Incoming RF is routed through the Tune Switch board ( PB 1720) before being sent to the RF board ( PB 1702 ). Switch S03 on the Tune Switch board is the attenuator switch that switches in R05,06, and 07 to attenuate the received signal. I would clean the contacts of S03 as it is likely the cause of your intermittent. It is a good idea to clean all relay and switch contacts as these are the major areas that cause trouble in these older rigs. Good luck

    • @toddanonymous5295
      @toddanonymous5295 Před měsícem

      Hi Will, The battery pack is working good. I try to match harvested cells as close as possible. Also what is most important is using a battery protection circuit, especially with series strings. The charging current is low enough, and the maintenance circuit protects against both shorts and excessive charging. It is wise to be cautious anytime working with lithium cells. These cells also have a built in disconnect mechanism ( under the positive cap) that open the circuit with excessive current. Thanks for the comment.

    It looks like next to adjustment R741 up by your high voltage oscillator, it’s stamped “1675v ADJ” which would imply that the 1665ish volts you were measuring were actually very close to correct. It’s odd that the schematic calls for over 2300 or so.

    • @toddanonymous5295
      @toddanonymous5295 Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Skyler, I maxed the setting of the adjustment but still was unable to increase the voltage. I have solid state HV diodes on order and it will be interesting to see if decreasing the load on the HV transformer improves operation. This unit has a lot more problems and I am not sure it it is worth the time and materials to get this scope back into shape. I have a thing for Tektronix scopes , and once started it is hard to know when to stop.

    I wonder why is there two branches of dividers R9,R10 and R11,R12 and a (pseudo) differential amplifier? Why not just one branch and a non-inverting amplifier? (I know that the direction on the ammeter would be different.)

    • @toddanonymous5295
      @toddanonymous5295 Před 4 měsíci

      Hi odieadog, In this case the meter needed to determine whether the cap was good ( LED off ), or shorted ( LED on ), since the meter would indicate full scale ( zero ohms ) in both cases. This configuration allowed the bridge and IC1-c to differentiate between an AC short ( normal good capacitor ) , and a DC short ( bad shorted capacitor ) . If you scope pin 8 of IC1-c , the 100 Khz signal is clamped up about 2 volts dc when the probes are shorted. This is enough to bias the base of Q3 into conduction illuminating the LED. The reactance of C6 at 100 Khz is 1.6 ohms. Therefor the AC the level at the base of Q3 is only 1/9375 the level at pin 8 and Q3 remains off during normal measurements. There are obviously other ways to accomplish the same function and the author of this article made us of all four op amps on this IC. Thanks for watching and the great comment.

    The diodes D1 and D2 can be considered fly-back diodes, or clamping diodes. If the capacitor is charged, it will force current flow back through the capacitor, rather than applying it to the differential amplifier.

  • @AstrosElectronicsLab

  • @AstrosElectronicsLab
    @AstrosElectronicsLab Před 4 měsíci

    "Across", there's no such word as "acrost". Subbed though 😀The TL081 is a single opamp, you most definitely mean the TL084, or TL074 which are quads. No idea what an "asamal multivibrator" is, I think you mean "os-stable", astable.

  • @AnalogDude_
    @AnalogDude_ Před 4 měsíci

    I have seen many of these spilt power supplies from guitar pedals, but this one is weird. the output of the opamp is connected to GND ... also the switch from the 9 volt batteries is connected to 4.5V. So you set GND for the whole circuit at 4.5V, but where is actual ground or -4.5V?

    • @AstrosElectronicsLab
      @AstrosElectronicsLab Před 4 měsíci

      This is a common way to do it. You use an opamp with the non-inverting input connected to a voltage divider to set it to half the supply voltage. The output of this opamp is now the "gnd" connection. This is only really useful for IC1-c, which is an inverting amplifier with the virtual ground point at pin 9. The other opamp parts don't need a reference to ground as one is an oscillator and the other is a rectifier.

    • @AstrosElectronicsLab
      @AstrosElectronicsLab Před 4 měsíci

      If you were to use non-inverting opamp stages, each would have it's own voltage divider on the non-inverting pin. However, this does increase noise as opposed to using a bipolar supply.

    • @simonlyons5681
      @simonlyons5681 Před 4 měsíci

      The output of that rail splitter is not shorted to the negative terminal of the battery. It's defining a halfway voltage which we're choosing to call 'ground' and label as such.

    many years ago when I was a Tech we used to replace all suspicious caps up front, particularly the well known dodgy ones ( Low value and tantalum). This was quicker and cheaper than testing each one individually and possibly having something intermittent and marginal slip by.

    Love it! New viewer and subscriber looking forward to watching ALL your videos! Please consider showing all your work in the future. Instead of showing; “here are the capacitors I replaced”, instead, ACTUALLY SHOW the replacement process. Yes, it means longer videos, but beginners would like to see it and learn, and others can fast forward through, and while longer, it would actually mean less editing on your part. Beginners need the education, almost no one is showing their work anymore, and soldering and troubleshooting are dying ART FORMS that need to be preserved for future generations. These are skills that will be LOST soon if we don’t do something about it. Thanks!
