In this episode we explore a relatively new subgenre of science fiction called Solarpunk, which aims to imagine better, more ecologically harmonious, futures on earth. talk about 3 months late
Great work, thank you
I think there might be more to the idea of there being a bad thing always happening in fictional utopias. I think it mirrors real life in a way. Like you can point out how things are generally improving for people with better healthcare and whatnot, but there's still slave labor and sweatshops and whatnot that haven't gone away despite things improving on the whole. Maybe it's not only better for entertainment for there to be some hidden conflict, but it is more a reminder how in real life there's still room for improvement
Ure kenouugh men
Barb still great they cant fight it
Such a smart analysis!
Wait till the reboot/sequel series.
If you look at the work of people like maria Gimbautas, there is the theory that matriarchal societies in europe around 4000 b.c. were invaded by horse-riding people from the caucuses, the horse-riding lifetsyle favoring warrior hierarchies, kings, raising and war and other patriarchal traits, so yes horses might be a fundamental part of the patriarchy. Also, no colonization by Spaniards or cowboys without horses, you need their power advantage.
Male redemption in death sounds like a great essay, can't wait!
You are becoming one of my favorite CZcamsrs and I honestly think your essays should be watched in schools!
Toxic masculinity is your best entertainment value.
I wasn't crazy about this movie, but always found myself put in position to defend it because the criticism it receives is always either misogynistic or lazy (because the reviewers really want to be misogynistic but aren't clever enough to do so successfully). Your commentary about the mixed metaphors and inexact messaging is the only criticism I've ever felt was truly earned, because you did such a magnificent job of first pointing out why most criticism is worthless since the men hating on it understood nothing. It means so much more to take in criticism from someone who fully understood every intention the movie had, and pointing out where it failed to live up to that, rather than being like the conservative pundits you mentioned who only jumped to slander because they did not understand and did not respect the premise to begin with.
Oh right, Ben Shapiro still exists. I was getting hopeful there for a while
most people aren’t taking a fair inventory of this thing you call “the patriarchy “. For every “men oppresses woman” example one can give an equal amount of “men enhance women” examples. …and it’s highly dishonest to say that toxic women behavior is an example of “the patriarchy “. What a cop out.

I’m wondering if their putting a trans character in the film undermines its anti-patriarchy message?

I love this! Thank you!

What a well researched video. Thank you for making this.

brilliant as ever!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you listen to the whole interview, she also says that if there was a way to reproduce without men, she would send them to another planet. And that men would "love it". When the detector detects "lie" in rhis clip, it might very well be true in her head, except for a small list of men in her life. She clearly has some history of of trauma and/or abuse and has disproportionate feelings about men. She herself talks about her past trauma sometimes. She built defense mechanisms but still is very biased, understandably. But therefore I wouldnt take her persepective as a guide.
Ok but what can we actually do? Its a bit hard to argue against the existence of a patriarchy when you do see mostly men in positions of power but in an ideal world i think it should be based on competence and not just having equal parts of both genders for the sole reason of being equal.
Ooh I'd absolutely love to see a side-by-side comparison between Arrival and Interstellar, given that they are so so similar: two parents trying to grapple an otherworldly issue, both portray the strong links to parenthood, but arguably there are gender differences between the two, although they generally explore themes of humanity, rather than men or women's challenges. Also really really insightful and interesting video : )
This is all good until we get to talk about Disney's patriarchy.
What is Disney patriarchy?
@@joseantoniomillabrito2764 Well excuse me for wanting clarification. 😂
@@joseantoniomillabrito2764 What’s Disney’s patriarchy? You mean Bob Iger running Disney? What does that have to do with Barbie?
@@beethovensfidelio no problemo. I love interesting arguments.🤘👍
@@joseantoniomillabrito2764I wasn’t trying to argue. I was asking for clarification. When you say Disney’s patriarchy are you talking about how Walt ran his studio or the princess movies? I don’t see how this is relevant to a movie about Barbie.
Tbh I don’t really care if an equal amount of women run sweatshops and become CEOs of companies like Blackrock and Lockheed Martin. Capitalism is what REALLY needs to end.
So this video was recommended randomly while researching solarpunk, and, honestly, I think I gave this movie too little credit, even though I remember being rather surprised by it being a better film than I expected. This movie is not unique in its environmentalist message, but because it is under the label of a megabillion dollar company, I dismissed it. Like, oh yeah, Disney churned this out to seem progressive (same with the diversity and LGBT couple). Because, look, as a marginalized person, I hate when people throw us in because it's usually to pander and I've become too jaded with folks in my community taking the bare minimum just to "own the conservatives." It never feels like we're genuinely wanted, just brownie points (like that one 'lesbian cop' character in that Pixar movie). However, your dissection made me realize something: why Disney let this flop. It didn't pander to the audience, but the creators of this movie. They said, "yes, have your solarpunk message with BIPOC and LGBT" yet its anti-capitalist message is likely why they didn't promote it. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but it would not shock me if one of those board pundits caught what was being said and waved off commercializing it. I should really give this a rewatch.
This video was amazing and very insightful. I wish all those who misunderstand patriarchy and how it was portrayed in Barbie would watch this video. I know it's not a fully in-depth, be all end all to the topic, but it is a good start that is clear, concise, and easy to digest. Love the videos as always!
I can't help but feel that Barbie and Ken could have both benefitted from having a talk at the start of the movie about how they each viewed their friendship/relationship (although the movie would have been very different! 😅)
Can you please add subtitles to the essay? The auto-generated ones really aren't great, so I'm having trouble. 😅
“In the game of patriarchy women are not the opposing team, they are the ball”. Great video as always, can’t wait for the next ones!
"White heterosexual..." and you're showing Spartans 😆 the gayest of the warriors
The ones in 300 weren't so much historical spartans as they were a male power fantasy, and they're juxtaposed against a very queer coded depiction of Xerxes
That is exactly the aim when activist say "all men" or "all white people".
What a great video!! :)
Just another explanation of patriarchy that is as vague and imaginative as the tooth fairy. The misconception is that it is a construct crafted by men and not just a product of nature and people naturally organizing into hierarchical structures. That structure used to be based on strength and now it completely defined by wealth. I don't give a single crap that woman have difficulties navigating the system, so do men in different ways, I care that poor people can't navigate the system because they can't obtain leverage.
Lol so might have had a misstep showing the 300 film talking about "white heterosexual hyper masculine" comment in the video.... Given you know all the homosexual things the Spartans did....
I’m watching this in case it disappears. As a man I’m excited to learn something new.
The movie was honestly so confusing when I tried to make sense out of the messages about patriarchy
Do you understand now after watching Pop Culture Detective video?
The movie didn't understand it's own message
@@ordeporama The message was "buy more barbie toys" so they nailed that IMO
@Hahahahaaahaahaa I cannot argue that 😅
The funny thing is that knowing Robert Pattinson he'd actually enjoy watching this mixup
I'm making my boyfriend watch this instead of the actual Barbie movie
Fighting in school as a kid would always make me cry because I didn't want to hurt anyone but I also onew that I had to stand up for myself or the bullying would continue. As the tallest kid in class(usually) I would get bullied for that reason alone since everyone has something to prove. And crying during a fight is seen as a weakness noatter the reason. So I don't cry anymore, except in private and for the "reasonable" reasons outlined in this video. Death or something very important and traumatic happening.
Patriarchy is a lie. What they had was a division of labor and responsibilities. In some of these "patriarchies" the women might even control all of the money. The man would earn the money and have power outside the home to function as a provider, while the woman had all of the power in the home including how the money was spent. It really depends on geographic location, and time period but on average there was an attempt to be fair to women. The division of labor was just more important in the past because we didn't have the same technology we have today. The jobs were much more physically demanding, and women have the burden of childbirth without any modern medical technology. The division of labor was practically unavoidable. If we lost all of the technology that we have created for the last five hundred years, we would go straight back to patriarchy out of necessity.
Thanks for adding some actual history and context into why things were done for thousands of years because it's obviously lost on the video creator
This is gibberish with no basis in reality.
Would people be really so dickish that we would take away women's right to vote after losing some "technology" (whatever it is that we're referring to)?
At least in Ancient Greece, the men can choose who they married to without the consent of the mother and the one who got wed. The only consent needed was from the father. How is that even fair ?
"there was an attempt to be fair to women" 😭😭 oh alright then - sorry!!
Interesting points. Thank you for speaking out.
Great analysis man
