Properly mirroring geometry for baking/rigging
This is a quick demonstration of the simplest procedure to "properly" mirror geometry for the purposes of baking and rigging. While this is done in blender 2.79 these practices can be applied to just about any modelling program.

EDIT: The legacy model editor no longer exists in DOTA 2, it has been replaced with the much more flexible Model Doc, I will hopefully learn enough about that one day to record tutorials on how to use that, but it's documentation is a bit spotty. How to export Models and Materials/Textures from Source 2

Please forgive the unscripted quality of this. This tutorial should go over the basics of exporting read only assets from source 2 as best as I am currently aware of. One main caveat that is explained at the end of the video, this technique is limited to static props and is not useful for properly exporting rigged & animated geometry.

Hello I don't know how to describe this issue but basically my custom 3d model I have some UV's on top of each other and it works fine, but there are parts where I'm using a mirror and in blender it would like fine, but on dota itself, there would be gaps there. Is this video the solution to that? (I am using an existing custom model)

@@MichaelShilliday this is why it's weird to explain. Let's use a cape as an example. On the outside of the cape there would be like holes/gaps in between vertices, but then you flip around to see the back of the cape (the mirrored right at the back of your character/Front view) it would be inverted of the cape where you would see the texture of the hole, but not the rest (the rest would be missing, but you know the cape exist there)

Habit. 2.8 nuked a bunch of my shortcuts and rearranged everything to the point of it being more laborious to use. I CAN use newer versions but I don't particularly like them. I'm effectively using 2.79 as long as I can because I prefer it. Newer versions don't really revolutionize my workflow.
nice video. what are the negatives of leaving the mirrored UVs on top of each other?
@@lordyrich can cause baking artifacts as the normal map light source is trying to bake multiple light directions on the same faces.

How do I export the model from Source 2 Viewer? It works for textures, but cant seem to work with models.
you can export models from the model doc editor in the source 2 sdk

@@MichaelShilliday like how do i have it so that when texture file has some uvs that use metal but some that are like fabric related like a pouch how do i make it so it dosent effect the pouch ?
@@FullCaber you might need to set up multiple material slots or set up shader masks

how to add facial rig to a model?
unfortunately there is no way (as far as I know) to export the facial flexes of heroes from the tools, you'd have to reconstruct them manually using blender shapekey functions, I've been meaning to make a tutorial on this for some time but I've been too busy.

the new model doc editor should be able to export rigged character models straight to .dmx now.
Seems impossible to export textures (in full resulution) that are bigger than your screen... do you know of a way?

hello sir, I'm new here, I want to import a model that has a roughness and metalness map, but why I cannot find the properties in the Material Editor?
Metalness and specularity must be activated by checking the boxes for mask 1 and mask 2

you cannot export meshes directly from SFM but you can export them from the model doc
i dont see any option for importing dmx files on blender, does they change that feature in new blender update?!
SMD/DMX support is a third party script you need to install. It doesn't come with blender.

There’s a better way to extract the materials more directly using the source 2 resource viewer.
