    In my twenties I walked Offas Dyke North to South, 3 days in and found a suitable camping spot on farmland, I asked permission to camp at the farmhouse a quarter mile down the lane and then I looked around for place to gather some water, I found a fast flowing stream and filled my water bottle , in those days you would use purifying tablets that you would drop in your water, no sawyer filters or similar, anyway returned to my tent and always as a secondary precaution I would boil my water before use, but as it had been a warm day and the water looked crystal clear I decided it would safe to drink, no problems, retired to my sleeping bag, in the early hours I was being very sick, sweating, Diarrhoea and feeling lousy, I decided to walk the short distance to the farmhouse to see if they had a phone and if I could get some medical help, The farmer who was very helpful got his wife to take me to hospital whilst he went and gathered all my belongings and tent etc and put them in the dry barn, I was in hospital for three days, eventually feeling well enough to resume my walk the farmer collected me and I gathered my belongings, before I departed he asked me to walk back and show him where I had taken the water from, when we got there he asked me to walk upstream of the collection area and lying in the stream was a maggot infested carcass of a rotting sheep, he had become mangled in barbed wire and was unable to get free, so after that I went and resumed my long distance walks but always checked very carefully that the stream was clear above where I intended to take my water from, so I take your point about bacteria and other nasties that linger in what you would think is pure, Good video by the way, 71 now and my LDW days are over , nowadays its a mobility scooter around the local park, but I still have a Brita jug filter to put in my water bottle to keep in my seat bag when I am out and about

    • @theinvisiblecamper
      @theinvisiblecamper Před měsícem

      I agree - when it comes to water you cant be too safe. Generally I carry all my water in unless I know there is a safe water source and even then I will bring in some back up water. When it comes to water treatment I take the belt and braces approach - I filter with a top end bit of kit, I then use military grade oasis purification tabs and then most of the time the water is also boiled. Thanks for your comment.
