Hey guys so I’ve wanted to do this since I rebuilt the cross slide, replacing the lead screw with a trapezoidal lead screw makes the most sense, this particular lead screw wasn’t my first choice as the thread pitch is what you would call coarse, and having done it I can positively say it’s not bad but having a much finer one would be the way to go, but they ones are expensive where as this one ...

    I have similar chisels, and I'm just working on replacement handles for them. The only thing I've done differently is I've got rid of the ridge on the back (just in front of the ferrule) so you can sharpen the entire chisel without hitting it on the ridge.

    You can get heat shrink sleeving that will make your electrical connections look much nicer. Just keep it far enough away from the soldering. a selection of 300+ varied pieces is under £4. You can also shrink pieces around allen keys so they don't get lost so easy. p.s. I felt a wave of dread when I saw your hands passing so close to the circular saw.

    First 20 years or so of my life, I lived near Redditch, Worcestershire. Milwards needles have been based in Redditch since the 1600s - the history is fascinating and well worth looking into - the best paid job was needle sharpener - they earned more than doctors (but rarely lived beyond 30 years old) - they used water mill driven whetstones, no safety gear, so the constant spray of grinding dust and metal debris into their faces clogged up their lungs or blinded them - even so, they resisted all attempts to improve safety conditions, because they didn't want to reduce their wages.

    That's a really nice result. Using more value in brass than the chisels cost is quite funny, though. I use cheap chisels at work, spend time sharpening them, then some git pulls one out of your toolbag and starts attacking plasterboard with it.

  • @joewilson4436
    @joewilson4436 Před 2 měsíci

    This was a fun video. As you said at the start, my biggest concern was the quality of the steel. It looked like you could cut it pretty easily with a file which shouldn’t be possible with good quality hardened steel (as far as I understand). You mentioned you thought it was 20-30 rc which was surprising to me, is that Rockwell or some other unit? Good chisels are usually 58+ Rockwell from what I undertand. But when you used it, it seemed to hold an edge for at least a little while, so it must not have been that soft (or I really don’t understand the Rockwell scale). I think it was James Wright who did a really extensive chisel test and tested some Aldi brand chisels that actually performed pretty well, I’m not sure if it was these ones. But maybe the steel isn’t quite as bad as we would expect? You mentioned case hardening but I was wondering if you might try to retemper it and make them a bit harder. I dunno if that would cause other problems though, like making them more brittle and prone to chipping? Anyway, that would be neat to see if you try it someday.

    I have a 5 piece set of Aldi chisels, but they have wood handles out of the box. I sharpened them similar to how you did and they’re fine. I wrap the full length of the blades with cardboard and put tape around that and to close off the end to make sleeves to prevent the blades from getting banged around and dull.

    • @Darren_Barclay
      @Darren_Barclay Před 2 měsíci

      @@mrlikwid100 na I wouldn’t worry or overthink it, it’s a tool use it as you see fit, don’t allow tool purist to spoil your fun use it with wood same as metal, I’ve made a tool rest so you can use chisels, it just sit a bit of steel in the old 4 way tool post, after each use just vacuum everything up and wipe it down with some oil, if you’ve got a compressor blow some air in to the chuck and you’ll be golden, if you can spare it just keep a separate chuck for turning wood, I do plan on getting a cheap one just for that.
