That made me feel nostalgic. Years ago (in the 90's) I used to make slip gauge boxes and other types of precision measurement equipment boxes, like vernier calipers etc. Most of them we made out of Brazilian mahogany, but we used other timbers too. We also made them out of birch ply, with finger joints, just like the box in your video. I did all the machining processes on the boxes. In fact I did my apprenticeship there. We made all the inserts too. All cut by hand (so to speak) on a little crosscut radial arm saw. Very laborious work! I was hoping your set would be in one of our boxes, but sadly not. Way too old for that. Sadly Parkwood Arts is no longer going. Went bust in '17 I think. Thanks for the memory of past times.

Great addition to the shop. The box looks great too!

First, get some chunks of tool steel and make replacements for the missing two spacers. Once you can do that (right size, polished flat, will wring, etc.), just use them all as stock & shorten all by 1.6% (25.5 mm -> 25.0 mm, etc.). Then you have a metric set 😉!

Thanks for the comment, I had thought about that but worry I’d ruin them if I start removing material. But it’s a great idea if I had a surface grinder I’d definitely resize them. Maybe I could use the mill with a diamond cup wheel hmm maybe.

Greatfind Darren, nice purchase Well Done
Great for checking the accuracy of your vernier gauge too
I find that some days my vernier is unreliable, may be due to damp or temperature but nice to be able to check them on a known, reliable dimension
    Cheers

For 20 pounds it's a great deal... The chinesium sets are accurate and a lot cheaper than name brand.

Looking good! Real shame they are imperial, but like you said you can still use them for some things.

My set is also imperial, but as I've only ever used them to set a sine bar to an angle, it doesn't matter because metric and imperial angles are the same!

20 quid for a set of slip gauges is a total steal. Even if they're imperial and a bit rusty.

Me, in America, absolutely floored that you got them for 20 quid. I am surprised that the steel wool had no effect on the dimensions. Is that because it was 0000 (“four-ought”)? Thank you for this video. I now know eBay is a good option. I didn’t know these could be restored, excellent work.

Hey thanks for the comment yeah got them a bit cheaper than other sets, definitely eBay is a great resource for tools like this. Well the steel wool or wire brush are softer metal than the slips so if bearly touch it, it really only touch the slight rust on them but yeah they were all still bang on the measurements.

Steel wool don't really cut at all, even if your work piece is much softer, say copper, your gonna rub a long ass time to change the dimensions

I guess the next question is; after all that work cleaning them up, can you still wring them together?

    • @Darren_Barclay
      @Darren_Barclay  Před 4 měsíci +1

Yeah they still stick together no bother. I never really took metal away, it was a brass wire wheel, it only cleaned them.

Well done, Darren, nice job. Although they are imperial, they will come in handy as you are a restorer, plenty of imperial stuff still out there 👍

Appreciated, Yeah they still stick together no problem, should have shown that my apologies. I’ve not removed any metal, simple cleaned them with a brass wire wheel.
