I think the general public loved it but madonna fans hated it. It kind of introduced Madonna to a new generation of hip hop lovers.

Well argued and nothing wrong with the list because it’s based partly on your own taste as well as objective appraisal. Like A Prayer probably my number one as well; it seems to get a bit of backlash because the late 80s production is not in vogue with many younger fans at the moment but of course this could change over the years. Agree about the weak spots on True Blue. But the greatest bunch of singles. I always thought the “New York/dork” thing was funny in a cheesy way and very her - but it seems to annoy a lot of people! Music is so amazing on a decent pair of headphones. If you’ve not tried that, it may change your opinion of the album.

Great review Josh! I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this album. I think this album is one of the only times Madonna made an album without trying to "play the game" so-to-speak. That's probably why it's so divisive among the public, but I think that's also why Madonna seems to still love it to this day. Also, I'm glad you love X-Static Process as much as I do! That's my favorite song on this album.

I agree that I love New York is one of the worst Madonna songs ever. I would say the worst, but Spanish Lesson from Hard Candy competes with it. Forbidden love I love, it is a must for me. :)

Good list, but did I hear you say This Used To Be My Playground is on Like A Virgin? It was from the 1992 soundtrack from A League Of Their Own. Also, Madonna was already a huge star before Like A Prayer came out. I guess you weren't even born yet then?

I realize this comment is about 3 years too late, but I'd go back and listen to Messiah. Her voice has the same beautiful quality that it does on Wash All Over Me in my opinion. I put Messiah on in my car with the speakers turned up and it just sort of whisks me away. It's one of my favorites on the album, to be honest.

I hate confessions album. Horrible album. Very overrated. Only like Jump and Hung up just a little.

Yes! Like a Prayer is my #1 with Ray of Light as my #2 also! Rebel Heart is painfully underrated and underappreciated. It really should have been another career-pivoting album for Madonna much like Ray of LIght. I think half of both MDNA and Hard Candy are A-level for Madonna, but the other halves of both albums are definitely D-level, which also puts them at my bottom rankings. Confessions has become my solid #3 Madonna album. but I will also say that American Life is under-respected.

Agree with you about Get Together and that genius line “do you believe…it’s an illusion…”, I always thought it should have been a bigger hit . Regarding “I Love New York “ at least she rescued a bad song with a great live performance on The Confessions Tour.

I was a teenager in the 80s so presumably witnessed Prince at his peak. I'd say For You and Prince (the album) are his coming of age, prime Prince starting at Dirty Mind and ending somewhere at the Black Album/Lovesexi period where Prince allegedly started to produce mediocre albums deliberately as part of a feud with his record company. On occasion he "returned to form" but he never went back to being in tune with the public at large and mostly kept either satisfying or even disappointing his loyal following. A bizarre aspect of his artistry is that his performances on stage remained extraordinary much longer than his record output did. I came to this list after having acquired 2010 2nd hand and was not too disappointed listening to it. It's bland at times but it does have hooks and arrangements that pleasantly surprised me. The same goes for Plectrumelectrum, which isn't featured here due to being a "collaboration" but I think it's 100% a Prince album. It has the same interesting mix of run of the mill songs and occasional gems. I keep wondering what was really going on in his head. Having been the most accomplished artist of the 80s, how he kept going for so long in twilight mode, is a true mystery.

American life album isn’t mainstream but it’s very unique in many ways.

My 3rd favorite Madonna album. I'm not a big fan of I Love New York too. Sorry is by far my favorite song here and my personal favorite Madonna song in this century. Fans usually criticize Push and I don't get why. Push, Sorry and Isaac are my personal "golden trio" of this album. Let It Will Be, How High, Get Together are great songs too. Never really liked Forbidden Love. The Bedtime Stories version is way better IMHO
