HENDON 1-2 CHARLTON ATHLETIC U21 - London Senior Cup Final, 29 April 2024
Although we ended up losing 2-1 after a very slow start, we pulled a goal back with Mert Apat scoring his first for the club and should have at least forced extra time. We can now look back on this season with very fond memories. Clips from the dressing room are always insightful, so hopefully you'll enjoy our last clip of the season.
Thanks for being on the journey with us.

    Lee Allinson as a manager: Played the game to a very high level, but communication is the key for a manager, and he's just somebody you never feel tired of listening to. He personable skills transfer to using his football coaching experience. Every successful manager had that. I hope he goes to National League, because managers there fail and just don't inspire.

    If that was true about how Mert was treated, then that is racist and so insulting. I believe Mert deserves a first team place, and his efforts against Wincester saved the game. This is disrespectful to his culture, and to Mert as a person. Football is supposed to be a game where everybody is an equal on the pitch. Life obviously does not convey those thoughts. How can Mert ever feel comfortable playing football here under these rules. He is a great player, with lots of presence and energy. He has an all round game, and unlike some, never gets pushed off the ball.

    Iam Allinson was one of the greatest players. If you were lucky to see him play, you saw courage, ability, but a football brain. He entertained. One thing he was, he was dependable. He is a legend. He played for the very best team in London, which must be short odds, even if you are a well known face. He did it.

    You could see it pre game, some players took this as a nothing game. The real match winners, are players like Dan and Joe- but the newish keeper showed the game plan that he does between the sticks. The rest are magnificent, but keep their best for the games which matter. They all won the points on board, so who can argue with them. They placed the team in a surprising position, so they are all Kings. Charlton had physically dominating players, who have a point to prove to progress to the pro game. They wouldn't be there, if not well drilled on how to keep possession. You can't expect an open game against them. The plus side, is that Hendon aren't academy players, so weren't out there to prove themselves as individuals. Just accept that the better team doesn't always win. Hendon bled, and have the wounds to show for the galiant way every point was won. No victory or draw came easily. I wouldn't expect these stars to have shown a regard, for a game which can never match the league or Vase heroics. I think the players know what they're doing.

    Hendon may have lost the Senior Cup final, but teams like that are built to keep possession, and basically play without any self expression. Any idiot can fit into that, and teams like Chesham and Gosport do the same. No joy in supporting clubs like that. They show no ambition or have personalities. They are robots. I don't believe the Hendon players were up for that battle.

    The team are still improving, which is frightening, so if any choose to leave then that's a big mistake. The management and players are winners. No way can they lose that final. The team play explosive entertaining football. Certain sides are more consistent, because their style of play is to dominate possession, but it's robotic and those individuals are only effective as part of that team. Hendon's players are allowed to express themselves, and they can do things with the ball which is pure genius. Long may it continue. This team deserve better sponsorship, because it has the potential to go higher. Only investment can guarantee that.

    Make no doubt on this, Hendon owes more to management team of Lee and Ian Allinson than anybody else at Hendon. They both combine to know which players work, and the results have proved that. What goes on off the pitch definitely keeps this great club alive, but putting great players onto the pitch is a job with pressures and criticisms. This isn't just a Southern League club. It has ambitions. Many thanks to two great people. All their team selections gained points, and prevented a bottom 4 place.

  • @charliemagri1669
    @charliemagri1669 Před 2 měsíci

    Lee has stated that players may decide to move to other clubs who offer more money, but think about this. Hendon have the nicest people, and other clubs don't have personalities. Referring to the players. The great Ethan Light had to go to Banbury, but that was a backward step, and I'm sure he's too professional, so just took it on the chin. Dylan Berry is mentally more mature, but he was more like a 20 year old with maturity of 40. He will handle any situation he finds himself in very well, and prove an asset to any team. These Hendon players are playing great football, but they have to be around good people to enjoy their game. Apart from Harrow Borough and Beaconsfield, no other club exists such a fine team spirit.

    Despite result, very impressed with Dartford's technique and tempo throughout. Their keeper was pure class. It could be argued, that Hendon knew the challenges ahead, but every man was excellent on the ball. Brosnan was obviously the better, but it was high quality throughout. 3,4,5 and 6 goals, needless to say, were outstanding, and made very good players appear lacking. Even then, Hendon missed so many chances! Hendon should win this final. They are all so good on the ball; express experience, and evidently a real team spirit. Dartford must wonder how they lost this. They were just beaten by a team which has achieved so much this year. They play like Brazil used to. That was when they had real characters. Hendon have them. Hope they stay together. Irreplaceable!

Now, it's time the fans dug deep. A fantastic year, and for only 12 pounds a match. If Lee can't make this a success, then nobody could. It's now time to show your appreciation, for all the great football this year; a management team which made the many high moments possible; not forgetting, the welcoming volunteers, who are the first people visitors get to see on entering the ground. Lee is a great manager, although Ian done it all as a player and manager. A great player of his period, where he could turn possession into an attacking moment, still logged into the memory years later. Lee has the backing of Ian, but Lee's man management skills are the best. If Ian had those, he would've been Premier League. Good luck to both. Two guys you wouldn't want to mess with. Intellectually, wise.

    Regardless of some the youth being put in, Hendon dealt with them, and that's all that matters. What won this for Hendon, was what has been achieved this season. Hendon have individuals, not just names on team sheet. The game was meant to test players against a decent level, but it will hurt them more than Hendon. Hendon didnt turn up against Hayes in that other semi, and look at them now. Results are all that matters in football. Those Hendon players aren't stupid. They could fit into any National League side. It's a mindset thing.Many are just happy to play Southern League, and for whatever reason. Niko, is the one who stands out. Not for me to judge the great man, but he's becoming more aware of what his feet can do. Maybe, coaches have restrained him, but he's a total attacking striker, who holds the ball up, where nobody gets near taking it. I love Niko, but he still needs to work on his final shot. He's at 90%. Hendon is a club, to put it bluntly, where you don't see idiots. Look at other clubs: their players, supporters and the rest. When you walk inside that stadium, you meet the personable volunteers, and they are so generous.You walk around, then meet the best people you'd ever wish to meet. Hendon is a club, which sets high standards, and fulfills them. For that, Hendon is a great place to go. The best people are at NW5.

    I never attended this remarkable game, but the players on Saturday had a feel good factor, and I hope that convinces many to come back next season. It is harder to play winning and entertaining football, but that's what these special players do. They so deserved that 6-3 win. A great management team, plus an immense team spirit and character on the field. Is it an excuse to say a person can get carried away. It will be so hard to replicate the achievements, but its more about these individuals achieving their best. Hendon, as a club comes second. These players made a special year. They are only human, with lives outside, but gave so much. Every pass, tackle and shot on goal meant so much. You are all brilliant. You never stop pushing out the boundaries. Great football, takes character, obvious technique, plus a a strong bond. You made everyone feel a part of that. That is special.

    A final mention about Dylan Berry. It would've been great to see him finish the season at Hendon, because keepers with a natural talent are as rare and exciting as any gifted outfield player. They can achieve the impossible, and can change a result in a second. Keepers worth anything, always have a personalty, and Dylan Berry always showed he was in total control, while between the sticks. As soon as the whistle was blown, I saw him change from his professional persona to being very amiable, while giving time for signing autographs to very young fans. His personalty and talent are of the highest quality, so that must mean a bright future in the game is a certainty. The gift he gave back to the club, shows a respect and an unselfish mindset. A lesser person would never consider such gestures. Dylan Berry made the game appear quite easy, but it's even harder, for anybody to show integrity. One in a million.

  • @charliemagri1669
    @charliemagri1669 Před 2 měsíci

    The keeper was pivotal, in ensuring the ball was given out quickly, and keeping up the high tempo which Gosport obviously dislike. He made the right decisions, and seemed to have the affect of being an outfield player. Gosport do tend to rely on quality passes to open up defences, and are confident enough to bide their time, but they don't play a physical game and always allow opponents plenty of possession. Hendon should've won this, but other sides have more natural strikers of the ball. Gosport did clip the bar, after a sharp turn and strike from an acute angle. With their style of play and team selection, Gosport can't but finish any season in a high position. Financially, it's more beneficial to remain in this league.

    • @charliemagri1669
      @charliemagri1669 Před 2 měsíci

      Impressive, but notice Gosport were always 10 yards off, when balls were played between the defence. Lots of crosses and runs, but no conviction of success even on the faces of attackers. Balls played out wide, but wingers deciding to hold onto possession instead of anything positive. The slightest challenge made them go down, so no ambition. I enquired and was told they can't afford to go up, as they have 4 local games a year, attracting over a 1000 gate. Gosport are the biggest fakes, and conned their fans. I heard analtercation between somebody and a player about the above, but why was he incensed? Must have hit a nerve. Who wants to watch a fix. If you've played the game at any decent level, you'd know it was fake.

  • @charliemagri1669
    @charliemagri1669 Před 2 měsíci

    Hendon consist of great players, but the defence prefer to play the ball instead of gètting stuck in. That's why you lose goals and don't hold onto the ball. Teams, like Chesham etc, live for the ball. They are robitic. You can't ever be Liverpool. They control the ball and are creative. Only Liverpool can do that. If you want to win the league, become hard to beat.

    A West Ham legend. Used to win every ball with his head, and a better way of getting through a quality defence, than searching for a player who can use their feet. Martin Jol said he wasnt good enough to lace his boots, but he turned out to be a very good manager. QPR could do with him now.

  • @charliemagri1669
    @charliemagri1669 Před 2 měsíci

    This was a nothing game in points value, but Saturday will be a special occasion. Playing a great Gosport side, watched by a crowd swelled by the kids who play for this community club, accompanied by their parents. It is guaranteed to be well attended, with lots of atmosphere; followed by the players awards, and a chance for these players to receive recognition for their efforts in a hard season. They have faced adversity, through injuries sustained in battles, but never stopped entertaining and won games through their courage and never say die attitude. Results and performances were above expected, and every player who proudly wore the shirt, contributed to a team triumph which will never be forgotten. It's easier being a fan, but the team put the effort in, and I don't know how they kept up their standards in over 50 games. Definitely a professional approach; certainly, a unique group.

    Unofficially, at this level, the Ref makes all of the decisions. The assistants are a requirement in the rule book but are there just for show. I heard the officials at SJP, a few seasons ago, where the Ref told his Linesmen exactly that. "I make the decisions and you indicate what I decide." That's why last season (?) Joe White was felled in the penalty area but the linesman said nothing. Even though he knew it was a penalty.

    • @charliemagri1669
      @charliemagri1669 Před 2 měsíci

      I understand your thought process, but refs at this level are a very good standard. Refs do understand the game in a different perspective- something no fan could mentally comprehend. I think VAR has made the game less natural, because what we perceive as true has been rearranged. Personally, I love the ref being conceived as a gatecrasher. The ref who showed Brooking's first yellow, and called half time a second after allowing a corner at World Cup which ended in a goal, are my favourite moments. Life is always about getting a little extra somewhere, and when players do it, cheating the ref is worth the entrance fee. Mostly, refs get away with murder. Who would want to be a manager or player.

    • @charliemagri1669
      @charliemagri1669 Před 2 měsíci

      One aspect I don't either agree with or understand, is that a ref will put up with managers swearing at players, but when a fan does it, they get thrown out. That doesn't happen at the Southern League, but it does a few steps down. I once spoke to a linesman at Wembley about this, and he kinda explained that a fan doing it was like a public disorder. At games with lower crowds, the ref is mainly concerned with a fan coming onto the pitch. A referee knows the game far better than any fan, player or ex player.

    • @charliemagri1669
      @charliemagri1669 Před 2 měsíci

      It's in the general rule book, that the referee can over rule the linesman.

    • @jagman84

      @@charliemagri1669 It's not thought process, It's sheer observation. I watch a swathe of matches at differing levels. Indeed, I've just watched a League One match this evening and that same "wait for the ref to decide" method was on full display. Including shocking offside decisions (made by a ref who was yards behind the play) and signalled dutifully by his assistants. So it's defiantly* crept up the football pyramid. Competent and unbiased officials are the cornerstone of the game (or any other one for that matter) and if players, managers and fans have no confidence that it is the case, the game is in big trouble. I chose "Defiantly" as it appears that the TPTB in the FA think that all is rosy in their garden but fans, biases aside, see each week that its not and is steadily getting worse.

    • @jagman84
      @jagman84 Před 2 měsíci

      @@charliemagri1669 The assistants don't make any decisions, that's the whole point! It's not about one side being robbed by a crass decision, it's the process where the referee decides every aspect and the assistants act accordingly. Think of repeaters on a vehicle. You activate them and they display your intention to observers.

    A nothing game? You've just achieved a great draw against the most talented side in the league. That has disrupted their play off chances, but made a statement about the standing of Hendon FC. Their keeper was excellent at Hendon, and saved certain goals.

      Regardless of what happens against Gosport, this result means more than those huge wins in the Vase. The fans watch Hendon because they are different. Other sides play a predictable way, but the individual talent at Hendon provides the spark for something to happen and surprise the opponents in a second. Hendon are all great players, and not robots. You could not become so involved watching another team. The quality and entertainment is amazing. Chesham may have won the league, but they did that like robots with no passion for the beautiful game. You got what you deserved at Merthyr.

    Without the subs, it were so easy for Walton. That was the only attacking force to relent the pressure. Defenders couldn't contain attackers, and the ball was pushed towards goal too easy. Just going through the motions. It means, to the fans, when you win.

    Lee: a manager has to provide support and confidence in a player to perform, and your words speak truthfully. I hope you win tomorrow.

    I really feel the loyal Hendon should get behind the team vocally each game, because that is an active 12th man and will inspire the team individually. They sound great, with club flags to enforce the clear message, but it requires more to be more vocal. You can't win without a fantastic atmosphere. I have watched Hendon, admittedly not frequent but over many years, and the atmosphere could be described as conservative. Watching Barnet, with only then 500 fans, people knew they were coming to watch a game which would be as good as any 4th tier game. It consisted of quality, fans rivalries, plus the noise which created an adrenalin in the players and fans alike. They won promotion, and a few players then played at an even higher level. It worked. I feel the Hendon fans should show more appreciation for the brand of football, both Lee and Ian have brought to Hendon. It's nothing other clubs could offer, because you have a combined mixture of two people who play the game the correct way, plus offer a life experience full of wisdom and guidance. The Hendon team is currently very special. Talent is apparent, but the additions are an opportunity to witness future league players. That must be exciting. Hendon are a mix of class players who have done it. Cumberbatch is a player wirh class, and I hope he shows more. Dave, the club legend, can read the game perfectly. He took that guy down against Walton, and saved a certain goal. Niko has shown a spark since receiving interest elsewhere. He's the best forward I've ever seen, and should still be in the league. Against Walton, he played like he remembered he was better. He was untouchable. A true winner. Could be the difference at Merthyr. Hamza, who I were fortunate to shake his hand in FA Vase, is a player with lots of ambitions. Very nice guy too. He thinks before doing anything, and will step up. His goal against Poole was the best. He has to be more of a team player. That takes extra thought. Joe goes without saying. The present keeper will make the Premier League. Matt is a better penalty saver, plus better handler of the ball- or more natural, but Berry has everything. I can't analyse a player who has everything. I watched him when that ex West Ham guy stung one in from outside the box. It annoyed him, but he was beat by 5 yards. That guy can hit a ball. A one off: Josh Payne. Berry isnt playing behind the quality defence Matt had, but you won't see any keeper who can dive as quick as he can do. Even Shilton couldn't save pens. The fans could put Hendon into National League. Niko will be a step higher soon. Good luck to him. Should have woken up sooner

    Luca has got to be a start in the next game. He is now proving himself in this league. Something has clicked in his mind. The Walton players were distraught at the final whistle, but despite the brilliant moments of individuals, Harrow Borough didn’t allow them to have so many clear goal opportunities. It's so easy to keep possession. A player receives, while others move into space. They have passing options, so dont have to hold too long on the ball. Hendon don't seem to know what to do in defence, hence the draws. Do you only work on attacking, because you are excellent there. Players ball watch, and react a second too late. Too many goals come from no communication while defending your goal. Pallister and Bruce were telepathic- so were Keown, Adams and Dixon. They worked as a unit. Offering back up, tracking runners, and disrupting possession. Merthyr is the team to beat. They will win the play offs and do better than Chesham. Merthyr are one or two short of going two the National League. Chesham have the numbers, but not the talent of Merthyr. Hendon need to win this game to prove themselves. Only way, is for the entire side committed to winning the ball, wanting to keep possession, and being confident in a passing game. Each player has to demand the ball, and teach Merthyr how to keep hold of the ball. The battle is in the middle. Forget about goals. This is a game where you win the midfield, and the opposition will back down. Players going off on ambitious runs won't work. You have to work for each other. You have Niko, plus both wingers to stretch them with pace, guile and skill. Only, when the moment is right

    The midfield do have their moments, but don't work hard enough. Their main job should be playing the ball away from defence, but they constantly lose it and the opponents are back on the attack. They seem to always want to play the perfect pass, but when that's impossible, they simply pass it to the nearest one, and passing on the problem. A true midfielder has to work harder than any other player; and be the best all round player in that team. Hendon's midfield lack defensive qualities. When you can do that, holding onto the ball is easy

    Since Ethan Light's departure, the defence has become an open trapdoor, with very little cover offered for the keeper. The problem yesterday, came from the midfield. They lost possession non stop, and were outplayed, making the defence appear bad. Balls should've been played quicker to the wingers, so their pace could test the opposition. All subs did very well, but had to chase the game. The guy who got the pen, had an impact and looked up for the fight. The left winger had a bad game, and just seems to enjoy running at and beating players, which he's excellent at. He lacks battling qualities, so the team had 10 men for long periods. Walton were terrible infront of goal, but the defence worked hard to close them down. The game changed with the intro of the subs, plus Niko's fearless attacking and hold up play. He did miss a great chance, but the draw made it appear it was a 50/50 game. The distribution of the ball from midfield was done without thought. Passes went to colleagues who were being heavily marked, and not in space. Walton anticipated where the ball was going to every time. Personally, I think the 3 subs should start next week. They stretched the defence, and all knew their roles. If the midfield give Merthyr a helping hand, the game could be over early on.

    Tomorrow, Walton will surely win. They need the points, like right now, but are relentless in passing the ball into wide areas and never give up. Lucky, that they lack pace, so the defence will have chances to foil them- but it's inevitable. Hendon have other easier games to focus on. I predict 1-3. Hendon have better players, but Walton are more consistent from 1-11.

    I wrote an email to the Southern League, regarding recent events in the game between Merthyr and Hungerford. A game,I hoped Hungerford would get something, but the comments witnessed at the game need to be punished. Football, once featured in a Paul McCartney hit, showed that football is the perfect complement to providing a bridge between conflict and peace. Football is always the best medicine. We will support our club in the 90, but when that whistle goes, the result is final. Some may wonder, why football is so important. We admire the players, volunteers, and the brilliance of the coaching staff. During those 90, everyone is the same, and we share a united commitment. The World outside differs. At Hendon, it feels like Heaven.

    Lucien is a brilliant winger. He may lack the playing style of the other winger, but he doesn't make mistakes, and is an intelligent player. He is direct, but knows when to cross, pass or shoot. He never makes a bad thought out move with the ball. He hits a cross with bullet speed precision. He's a throwback to the type of player fans enjoyed in 1990s,. One's who could unlock a defence, and create a goal for free. He doesn't have the class of Ali, but the power and speed of Tyson. It's obvious certain players prefer to dictate how possesion moves, but you sometimes require power, speed and precision crosses to threaten the goal. Cumberbatch linked up excellently in last home game to put Niko through on goal, but can he keep that up. He can't be a luxury player.

    As a neutral, popped in to see this before the Brentford v Man Utd game. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hendon unlucky not to get a point in the end.

    The players have obviously worked themselves into the ground, and now that's taken its toll through injuries. With the position safe in the league, no player should be playing unfit from now. A lesser replacement has got to be better than an injured one. Next season will be the start of an even harder battle to remain in the league.
