Dirty High Water Fly Fishing - NEW Worm Pattern... Best Worm Ever??? - Code Breaker Angler
First off, BE SAFE, high water can present some serious life threatening hazards.. If the water is blown out bad and a raging river of death, don't chance it. No fish is worth putting yourself in danger!
I love the Squirmy Wormy, especially in high off-colored water. The problem is that Squirmies fall apart very easily and are not durable at all. My friend Devin Olsen came up with a solution, it's called the DNA Worm. About a million times more durable, and still has great movement. I may be switching over for good!

I really like the Blood Red color.

International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4) Official Selection 2023!!! No two fish eat a fly the same way, and no hatch is the same one day after the next. Take for example one of the most predictable hatches each year, the damselfly hatch. For years Gilbert Rowley and Nic Heslop had brushed off the fabled rumors of a high mountain lake home to oversized tiger trout and a prolific damsel hatc...

Excellent work. I fish high lake and fished rainbows and Brookies during many damsel hatches. Very much enjoyed watching it.
Awesome! Sounds like you know how much fun it can be fishing this hatch!
@@GilbertRowley yes sir. Sometimes fish ignore single try fly and concentrate only on clumps. we have to tie a 3 or 4 dry damsels on a big loop knot, cut down hooks at the bend except for the one in the middle. Non stop action.
@@luminepixels5437 love it! I’d love to see what that cluster looks like, sounds amazing!
Do you guys have any underwater video of a Caddis pupa emerging from bottom to the top? I’ve been dying to see any footage of this
Not yet, but we should have that footage before the Summer is over 👍
Pure enjoyment
So very true! Exactly how I feel 😁
= it
So very true! One of the best times to be on the water!
= absolute heaven!
Amen brother!
Finally a "high water" video where the conditions look like those that I face every year on my beloved creek in Northern California, sometimes through June. I've seen several "high water" videos from Pennsylvania, and they always make me shake my head. Thank you!
You bet, glad to hear it was of value. I’ve never fished the creeks in Northern California, but I’ll bet they can be fantastic! Best of luck out there!
Holy Crap! Send that trout to fat camp!
No kidding, right?! 😂
Rainbow? That’s a fish!
Quite the specimen for sure!
Wow, how did you keep that drift for 15 seconds in that fast Water that’s impressive either that or you’re catching the outside edge of that pool where the soft water is and that would make sense but either way what heckuva cast! At the 5:28 mark.
@@troutman007 thanks, my buddy Nic did a great job with this presentation. A big part of it is getting your flies down near the bottom where the currents slow way down. That your slighter/indicator should usually be traveling quite slower than the surface currents visible on the water’s surface.
Great film! Excellent work.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
What an absolute unit! Super chonk!
It really was! Healthy!
Good eating for sure.
Cool vid bro one of the best fishing videos I’ve seen 💪🏻🔥🔥
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
Wow. Great video. Well done to all involved especially the photographer who has captured this magic moment.🙏🇻🇬
Very kind, so glad to hear you enjoyed it!
hello mister. This fishing technique is really cool.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
@1:30 the smile is worth the effort
It’s what it’s all about!
Love your enthusiasm ! Thanks for sharing !
You bet, thanks for checking it out!
Great video! I ordered some of the DNA flies and they should be here next week sometime, are your patterns available to buy? I really like the stonefly! Thanks
Awesome! I’m sure they will crush it for you! And yes, the Rowley Stone is available here: captureadventuremedia.com/home/shop/
Fantastic! Thank you 😊 Order placed
Awesome! Just saw it come through, thanks! I hope they fish as well for you as they do for me.
I’m glad to see that you use a bobbin cradle It’s really necessary for me too ( with a half hitch) Bobbin cradle is an excellent option in fly tying
I agree, it’s very nice to have on the vise 👍
What size tungsten bead for size 14 hook ???
2.8mm or 3.3mm if you’re tying on a jig hook and want to up the weight. Either size works great, I tie 14’s with both so I have two weight options with the same size 14 pattern.
Thank you Gill Tkcare David-:)
WOW filming fishing and naration brilliant all top drawer
Very kind, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love Lance! I'm thankful to live 10 minutes away from him.
Awesome! One of the best guys I know!
When was this shot
About two weeks ago 👍
Great vid. Very helpful. Thanks Gilbert.
Thank you! Glad you found it useful!
Can you tell us how you rigged that? Stone fly on the bottom with the worm up the leader on the offset of the tag end? (not sure how to describe!)
You bet, I fish this on a Euro rig, but can be fished under an indicator as well. I fish my top fly on a 5" tag, and 20" below I tie on my bottom fly. On this day the stone was on the bottom, and the worm was up on the tag. You can learn way more about leader design, rigging, gear, and technique in our Materclass found at modernnymphingmasterclass.com
@@GilbertRowley thanks so much. I actually bought the master class a few days ago! Great quality video. I am surprised the top fly is only 5 inches long off the main. I think I saw a much longer tippet for this in the video. But I guess it is condition dependent.
@@johnmcevoy glad you’re enjoying the Masterclass! The stone is on the longer tag, about 20” below and the worm hangs off a 5” dropper up the line from the stone. I’ll bet you were seeing the 20” piece handing down. Thanks again!
Thanks for sharing!!! 😀
My pleasure! Thanks for checking it out!
Great video Gil. Really creative angles, like the rock turn, that make you forget it’s a solo effort which I know is hard to do
Thanks man, when I’m in the middle of filming these vids I sometimes wonder what I’m doing 🤦♂️ But afterwards I’m usually grateful I put in the effort 😁
Love watching your videos man! I enjoy your fishing videos but need some new tying videos also!
Thank you! And I hope to get some thing videos up soon!
Cant stop watching these vids mate bloody brilliant
Very kind, thank you very much!
Great stuff, per the usual.
Thanks man, I appreciate it! Hope the water’s been treating you well!
Nice video! DNA worm rocks!!
Thanks man, and I totally agree! Great pattern, way more durable and still fishy as can be!
what weight rod is that? type and reel?!
T&T Contact II, 10’ 2wt. It’s my fav for small streams tacticalflyfisher.com/products/thomas-and-thomas-contact-ii-nymph-rods?sca_ref=6033339.bFP70fhFSs
The reel is a Lamson Litespeed 5+ collabs.shop/aw3xnq
I could watch this style of video all day. Loved the video!
Thanks very kind! Thanks so much for following along!
Nice. Love the videos. Always pick up a tip or two. Thanks
Awesome! Glad to hear you’re finding them to be useful!
Wow brilliant watched a couple of your films today best I've seen love them cheers
Sweet! So glad to hear you enjoyed them!
I loved the video Gilbert!
Thanks Rob! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. I did not catch the name of the stone fly?
Thanks! It’s called the Rowley Stone, this was the golden version. 👍
Awesome video. We are dealing with the same conditions here in Colorado. On question, are you shooting in 60 or 120p for your slow motion shots?
120 fps, glad you enjoyed the vid! Hope the rivers in Colorado treat you well!
...ya missed him lol
😁 kinda like biting the side of your cheek when chewing… not necessarily where we’re aiming 😉
I know...he missed. I felt the need to play youtube commenter for once lol. We're you using flotant? Bc that thing was definitely riding high!
@@mikeobryant3367haha, you nailed the play by play 😁 Love it!
@@mikeobryant3367oh, and yes a desecant floatant, called dry shake. Works great!
@GilbertRowley I mostly fly fish inshore saltwater. I rarely have a need for floatant but I will keep that in mind.
Some hatches you really remember. The green drake is one of them.
So very true! One of the most memorable for sure.
So Good! Thanks Gilbert! 🙏🙏
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it!
Stunning. And that bouncing caddis thing is just so cool. And your afternoon reminds me of a mind-blowing evening on the Provo back in about 1997 when the caddis hatch was almost too thick to see through as the sun went down and big brown trout's minds were exploding. Me and two other guys (strangers downstream whooping and hollering) were the only ones on that stretch of river and we were hooking monsters until long after it was pitchy black. I remember hearing them slosh back to the parking area around ten-thirty and I shouted, "Did you guys see that!!!???" and all I saw was two headlamps shaking side-to-side in the darkness in utter astonishment. "Holy sh*t what a night," one guy said.
Amazing! What an awesome experience! There’s something so special about cool summer nights fishing into the dark, listening when to set the hook instead of seeing it… so special! Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely gorgeous
Thanks, it was quite the fish!
I started Euro Nymphing with a cheap Echo Carbon XL Euro rod, self-taught with the Dynamic Nymphing book. I used to catch 1 to 2 fish per outing. Now I catch between 6 to 10 every outing and bigger trout. I can attest the best way to catch numbers and quality of fish. Even my friend is buying a Euro rod after seeing me catch so much trout.
That is awesome! So glad to hear it’s working so well for you. Sounds like we had a pretty similar experience with the increase in catch rate. Awesome!
🤑👍
Thanks man, it was a gorgeous fish!
Excellent video my friend! Just a quick question. I don't tie flies(yet). Do you offer those flies for sale anywhere? Cheers! Matt
Hey Matt, you bet we do. Most of them can be found at the link below: tacticalflyfisher.com?sca_ref=6033339.bFP70fhFSs
Are they trout? Or char?
That’s a great question, actually they are an intergeneric hybrid of both. Salmo trutta x Salvelinus fontinalis
😍😍
Thanks, a super cool fish!
I bet that fish was delicious! 🤤
All catch and release over there. Super fun to catch them!
Sweet vid! What camera did you use?
Thanks man! Much of it was shot in the Sony FS5, including all the shots of fish jumping out and eating damsels. Other parts were shot with a Canon C70.
Definitely on my bucket list for one day.
I hope you make it over there, truly AMAZING!
