- In the Summer of 2020 we organized a trip to Lake Powell to chase the legendary striper boils. Needless to say, it didn't disappoint! We had some of the best fishing of our LIVES on this trip, and the best part... we were able to share it with our friends and family in a place that truly is paradise on earth!
Side Note:
As is apparent in the film, we chose to pursue these stripers from wave runners. This is an exceptional way to chase these fish since the stripers are chasing schools of shad and often times moving around the lake quickly. I do want to mention that this lake is over 185 miles long with endless canyons to explore. That is not a typo... it is seriously over 185 miles long. Literally millions of people visit and recreate on this lake every year. I recognize that there is some controversy in our sport of fly fishing regarding the use of wave runners. However, in this particular body of water while chasing these fish we are neither disrupting other anglers, the fishery, or habitat by using wave runners. It is simply an efficient way to cruise around a very large lake looking for fish behaving in this particular manner that allows us to fish big poppers to overly aggressive fish.
Film Overview:
Experts say that sunshine has a way of making us happy, and with that in mind, welcome to my happy place. In a magical desert landscape filled with red rocks and water, there lives a healthy population of land-locked striped bass. Join us as we take to our wave runners with fly rods in hand to chase the legendary striper boils of Lake Powell.

I started fly fishing for stripers at Lake Powell about 10 years ago with my 2 boys and have never seen anyone else doing that until your video. We definitely need to try it from a wave runner instead of my boat. It has been the most fun I’ve ever had fly fishing, partly because of the hunt that’s involved and partly because of the satisfaction with finding that “sweet spot” that you talked about. Your cinematography is amazing and your channel has quickly become one of my all time favorites for fly fishing! Nice job and thank you.
Dude that’s awesome! Glad to hear you and your boys know how much fun chasing stripers can be down at Powell. Such an awesome adventure! And thanks so much for the kind words about our channel. We really appreciate it!
Some of the best video I have seen on top water action! Thanks gang.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed!
Gave me chills. Great share!
Thank you, it was a super fun and special trip!
Throwing plugs on the flyrod had to be fun. Thanks for taking us along with you. They make great tacos too.
Thanks Stacy, it's an absolute blast! Glad you enjoyed the video, and I totally agree... AMAZING tacos! ;-)
Easily my favorite of your vids.
Thanks man, I appreciate it! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Wow really enjoyed this video very nice camera work beautiful scenery beautiful fish but the quick shot of the synchronized casting was exquisite! Good stuff man thanks!
Very kind Tom, thanks so much! It was an amazing trip to say the least!
Love this place! Looks like some good Boils. I haven't seen them like that for a few years now.
It was spectacular! I hope the lake level raises so we can all enjoy the lake again this year!
Love Powell & you took this place & technique to another level! Amazing video!
Thanks so much! It was a fun project in an AMAZING setting!
Always wanted to go to Powell
I hope you get a chance to, it's amazing!
Wow in all my years going to Powell I never noticed boils like that. Awesome stuff man!
Thanks man! It was the best I’ve ever seen it. Truly fantastic!
So much fun!

That was just a pleasure to watch
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Crazy !!!
It was nuts! Thanks for watching!
Wow dude, cool looking place and nice fishing action!
Thanks! It truly is paradise down there!
I’m going to Powell next week! What flys and colors would you recommend?
Awesome! This is a great time of year to be down there! Bubble headed popper (or any poppers in olive, tan, or blue) and Clouser minnows in olive and white, all white, or chart. and white. That's all I ever fish down there. Best of luck, hope it goes well for you!
What are those flies and where can I get some?
Boils were insane, What month was it?
It was awesome! This was the last week of July.
Looks like a blast! What weight rod do you like to use for stripers?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! We were fishing 6 wt rods. It's a great size for the fish down there.
@@johndemario8173 A five pound fish out here is a really good fish. Most are in the 2-3 lb range. There are a few that are MUCH bigger, but in all my years I've never landed a stiper down there bigger than about 7 lbs. Also, the size of the rod is often times dictated by the size of fly you are casting, and for the poppers and Clouser's we fish down here a 6 wt is perfect. I know other guys who use and 8wt and that get's the job done as well, just not my personal preference.
@@johndemario8173 My pleasure, good luck down there!
Dude that was so cool! Good stuff man! I’ve been wanting to take my jet ski out to some remote lakes in no California to target smallies, but didn’t know it was a thing, you’ve just inspired me. What’s the controversies around jet ski fishing?
Thanks for the kind words! In certain parts of the country jet skis and wave runners zip in and out of other boats while they are fishing. It disturbs the fish, disturbs the fisherman, and makes people mad. I’ve always been respectful and stayed away from other fisherman and never had a problem, but after creating this film I had others in the industry tell me how despised they are on the East coast and in Florida specifically. I’d just recommend being respectful and having a good time giving it a shot!
For sure, I can see that. Thanks for the advise!
@@joeynizuk4539 Anytime, thanks for the support of our films.
Just saw your video caddis magic at the IF4 screening in Sacramento! Epic stuff man! Keep pushing out cool stuff, can wait to dance some caddis off the middle fork American!
Too many fish in that pond. Might as well harvest all that you hook.
Agreed! Many days we do, but out on the wave runners is a bit tricky so we usually release them in those circumstances.
