MY STORY:
After serving six years in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant, I knew that I wanted to get into the world of business. Consequently, I decided to work on crafting my sales skills.
In 2020, I was in a Sales role for a marketing start-up in Austin, TX, and on the side, I would mow a few yards for some extra cash. Keep in mind, I had a 21” push mower, an electric leaf blower, and an electric string trimmer folded into the back of my wife’s 2011 Ford Focus.
After giving my life to Jesus Christ on Easter in 2021, a woman named Tamalia Scott told me that she believed God wanted me to pursue lawn care full-time.
After a few sleepless nights and endless prayer, I decided to quit my sales job and pursue lawn care full-time in April of 2021. Since then, by the grace of God, we have surpassed $1,000,000 in sales and have two lawn care locations throughout Central Texas. Over the next 10 years, it is our goal to have 12 locations throughout Central Texas.
Throughout the journey of owning a lawn care company, I have learned MANY valuable business principles through trial and error. It has now become a passion of mine to help smaller lawn care businesses scale their companies past $500,000 in annual revenue.

If the first lawn took 20 minutes how much time is spent mowing with a stand on mower, and combined time weed, edge and blowing. It's currently taking me 20 minutes to mow 5,700 sq ft property with 1,000 sq ft home with single car garage. Then 15 minutes WEB (weed,edge,blow) for 35 min service time. I'm trying to decide if the stand on is going to be worth it.
Is that your guy's solo setup? What size properties are you guys doing?
We use the same set up for both 2 person crews and solo routes (minus 1 blower). Average property size is 6,000 sqft

I use Cub Cadet. I have their 33 inch walk behind and the 30 inch mini tractor. I just stick to country yards. The mini tractor is fun to ride i can ride it all day. The tractor can also do bagging as well for leaves. My vehicle is a cargo van so I can fit the machines in with no trailer.

I thought sales tax was only assessed when you are selling a product, not a service. Do you charge sales tax?
This is dependent on your state. For Texas, lawn care services are required to collect sales tax. The only service we offer that does NOT require sales tax collection, is pet waste removal.
Definitely check your state. Lawn care and landscaping is weird bro

I only do follow up calls when we’re needing to fill up the schedule with more BH. Otherwise, I rely on our automated follow up process. I’ll be sure to record more calls and whenever I encounter objections, I’ll be sure to get them posted

If you have two people in one truck do you still expect them to produce between $80k-$120k each? If not, what would be your expectation for a 2 man crew?
Great question! This ultimately comes down to your hourly rate. Regardless, we’re seeing roughly $115k per employee per year in a 2 person crew setup

Labor is expensive my friend. Charging $600, after taxes, overhead, labor, materials, etc., you might lose money.

I'm trying to quote a neighbor for a small job of about 200 sq ft at 2 inches depth, but unsure how to quote the labor piece. Raw material is about $700 I've calculated for rock, fabric, and sand/soil. Would just be me out there grindin'!
