"Marathon mom" vs. *dense dad*, man vs. bear, and *popping the balloon* on the gender wars discourse
In this video I talk about the "marathon mom" that went viral on TikTok, due to her decision to continue competing, rather than to stop to embrace her children. I talk about how women are more than just their "motherhood" role and why this whole instance struck a nerve with most women. I then go into the man vs. bear debate, where I acknowledge that it's "not all men" but rather the luck of the draw that compels women to choose bear. Finally, I go into the "pop the balloon or find love" dating show and how it's content like this that is fueling the online gender wars discourse; it's important to hash out issues plaguing both genders but we need to do so in a respectful manner, otherwise the divide will only get worse with time.

    I am cringing and feeling repulsion and embarrassment. I’m a black man , taking all this in and some of it is making me so angry. Too many things about this society are a plague. I don’t know if black folk or Indians or ANYONE who’s not white are going to get decent treatment by the entertainment complex EVER. I appreciate the woman who created this video essay. It’s long past time for entertainment to change. This is ridiculous.

    As a Black American man I hate to say this, but she probably wouldn't have gotten as far as she has in Hollywood without her conforming and putting white culture and men on a pedestal!! It happens in my own community. Also India deals with a Caste system where often the whiter you are the higher you are placed, which was deeply influenced by the White Colonizers. I do think in Kaling's case it's art imitating life. And I do think she conformed to the environment she grew up in, in America. She probably grew up around predominantly White kids in school who would bully her for being Authentically Indian. So she probably felt she had to conform to fit in. This mindset has shaped her entire life. Some people are strong enough to be proud of who they are no matter the environment their in, but some unfortunately aren't. Unfortunately it's almost like Stockholm syndrome.✌❤🙏

    As a Black woman, I understand exactly what you're saying as far as representation. I feel like Mindy Kaling is the Brown women's version of Tyler Perry. Tyler Perry loves to write about Black women but majority of his movies feature the same stereotypical Black women that are going through some sort of trauma. I think it's Mindy and Tyler's prerogative to write the characters that they relate to but it can become stale to keep seeing the same character traits over and over again. Tyler had proudly boasted some years ago about not having a writer's room but the tone of his work always reflects the dire need for other ideas. However, I'm so glad you mentioned Shonda Rhimes. Her projects have been refreshing in the portrayal of POC. We also need more SA writers and directors to be given opportunities in major studios. That's the only way we'll see new ideas, IMO.

  • @redeyez_entertainment

    My biggest issue with her is when ever she portray's an East Asian Indian girl they only date white guys. Then when she talks about "brown girls" they never date black men and when they date their own kind they usually makes fun of the guy

    Mindy is definitely living that cast system racism. She's dark skinned and I knew she would only date white men and I saw she seemed like she hates her skin color. Sad. The British colony did some damage into dividing Indian people based on color and even some darker skinned Indians believe white European skin is superior. As a black American I am brown skinned and have a coworker from India that is darker than me and he he's married to a black woman and embraces his color. We should love ourselves and this sister in the video is incredibly beautiful.

    While Shonda Rhimes is portraying brown girls in a powerful way, she has a Mindy Kaling size problem with how she portrays unambiguous black women not just in bridgerton but in all the shows that she writes and needs a similar analysis, but not by this platform.

    I was very critical in my previous post about 20 minutes ago but I also want to make a less political point regarding Mindy Kaling. I remember years ago seeing her in an interview and she explained that the fact as you said her parents did meet in Nigeria but that they were also from two different parts of India that spoke entirely different dialects. Because of that her parents only spoke English to each other as well as in her home. She went on to say that she didn't really have much of a connection with the other Indian kids that she went to school with, I believe she used the term friends, because they spoke another language so she was always sort of outside of them. That may speak to her perspective and disconnect.

  • @mephiston1216
    @mephiston1216 Před 2 dny

    Not giving Mindy a pass as she bears some responsibility, but if your project isn't self funded and distributed there is usually an old white guy (or group of them) who has final say on everything because they are paying for everything. The studio doesn't like something in your script then you have to change it or you get replaced by someone who will. Shonda can get away with it because Shonda is footing the bill with her own studio and then selling the product to anyone who wants to buy it (food for thought: ponder why Bridgerton was bought by Netflix and not one of the bigger platforms with deeper pockets). And while there may be something laudable in an artist that walks away from fame and money to stand on principles, they also have to work to survive and "playing ball" means your reputation doesn't get tarnished with the people dishing out the work; it's not an easy choice to make. Let's be honest, most people would take the money. Without being in the rooms or hearing from Mindy directly, we don't know if these influences were at play or not. And without knowing that, I don't think we can lay all of these problems solely on her shoulders. There is a long standing anti-minority bias in Hollywood that pressures people into conforming if they want a seat at the table. I would argue that does more harm to minority voices being heard than Mindy.

    THE DELUSION OF INCLUSION.... As a black woman who yes grew up in the Scooby-Doo era, and was/is definitely a fan of The Office and I can prove it by reciting dialogue, it's interesting to hear the perspective of another marginalized races opinion of how they're portrayed or at least feel they are portrayed. I'm not a network TV watcher so outside of The Office I have not watched any of the Mindy Kaling shows nor have I ever seen her in a movie, but I do know she has become a bit more of a mover and shaker in 'Hollywood' particularly as a writer and producer. I was also originally born and raised in NYC so my experience with many races is clear and present. I also happen to now live in a county in Maryland that has a fairly substantial Indian population ie: doctors galore, tech, etc. One of my son's closest friends is of Indian descent. He also has another of Pakistani descent who is Muslim. And yes I'm aware of the irony of that 'I can't be a racist because my best friend is a..... statement. 🫤' With all this being said I realize that I would not be able to express my opinion as a black woman in a CZcams thread but in summation, I think my opinion of Indians has changed over the last year. I've learned that skin color is irrelevant when it comes to American(ized) Indians. (No I'm not referring to native Americans.) Regardless of the opinions that I've seen expressed regarding Mindy Kaling, it's all been overshadowed and verified by the introduction of Vivek Remaswamy (spelling ?) and Nikki Haley, and several other meaningful and dangerous positions in the GOPs orbit have definitely changed my opinion of Indian Americans in this country. It may also be what you see with Mindy Kaling. It's referred to the delusion of inclusion. You may not look like them but if you spout the same rhetoric, deny that racism exists, you have a chance of getting closer.. Closer to what? Whiteness. I no longer see 'South Asians' as friends in the fight. I see them as enemies. Mindy Kaling may not be your strongest representative but Vivek and Nikki are. Sometimes we're all a victim of the one bad apple, but it is what it is.

  • @John-ct9zs
    @John-ct9zs Před 4 dny

    I'm in Mindy Kaling's generation, grew up in the 80s and 90s, and her representation of South Asians assimilating in North America is very dated to the 80s and 90s, especially something aroundm1985, 1992 or 1997. Back in 1989 or 1999 she would have been seen as moving the needle just because she's there. But her style quickly became dated, even by the later 2000s, and definitely after 2010 it never felt feel modern or current with some South Asian/Indian girl pining after an average looking White guy. If she was swooning over a hot White guy that's one thing, but it's always some nerdy, average looking skinny White guy.
