I owned a video and music store deep in the Rocky Mountains from 2001-2008, and I got their EP with this song in my regular promo box from my AEC rep. I always gave everything I received a single run through in the mornings when I had time to chill before I opened, and then through early afternoon I'd revisit the ones that caught my attention. I waited eagerly for the full album, and when it arrived I played the FUCK out of it in the store, and I got multiple copies sold as a result. This band was awesome on a modern (at the time) and nostalgic (Gen X) level. I still have the promo EP and the full album on CD. In hindsight, I really see 2005-ish as the last true resurgence of guitar-and-vocally--driven, 70s-80s-90s-influenced rock music. I had just turned 30 and I was super into Secret Machines, Interpol, The Strokes, The Killers, and I thought for sure Pitty Sing would just crush it alongside these bands. Paul Holmes and the crew: wherever you are, I hope you know that what you all did back then made an impact, and those of us who still remember, we KNOW you were robbed of your due. Stellar music, better than anything that's been released in the last 15 years, at least. Please give it another shot. There's nobody who could even compete with you.
My homie was their roomie back in the early aughts in Boston….. these guys were in another level. Such a great time with bands like John Browns body, kidnapkin, the shills, violet nine, spiritual rez, eclectic collective, the thickness….. shoney…..
I remember the Free Trade Hall gig, I was just starting out as a guitarist myself. I suddenly wanted a red 335! It was a great concert. I also saw you at The Forum in Wythenshaw.
I don’t know how this wasn’t a hit when it dropped in ‘05
Strange that other pop songs become hits compared to this entire album really
I still listen to this regularly. I remember when I bought this CD at Virgin Records in Orlando in 2005. I played it over and over. Really a shame they didn't get the recognition they deserved. Still a fan even at 34! <3
Any chance you can resplice so both channels get sound. Memorable group. Lifelong music. Greenbelt era.
Fantastic stuff..and so clear..rock at its best
Jesus ah Jesus I am having Spirit of Truth when you turned me up to see.
See Jonathan kleck on bitchute channel
Wow...what a treasure this oral history is! I write a blog on the greatest CCM albums of the 1970s and the blog has over 345,000 page views. I'm getting ready to write a post on The Prize, and the info contained in this video is invaluable as research for that blog post! The Prize was such a great album, totally underrated. Every song was a winner. Not a single skip-over song on the record.
This still my shyt
Interesting comments from some (one) that would seem to have grandier over the song's author. But let sleeping dogs lie. But no. Let me poke them with a stick. THE PRIZE and what it stood for has been a spine for me. For 45 years. I still play this album almost daily. It would be good know from the horses mouth what it was about. If not then fine. US politics and money in orbit NOW likely reinforces what this song hints at. Let it live now.
Great one hit wonder band!
Love this. The Wall was and is an important backdrop for me.
cool ~
Please convert this song to stereo
I wish you could convert this song to stereo. It only plays on one speaker
it's good and all but the commercial gives me the creeps.
Thanks for your memories. These song were a big part of my early years as a Christian. Your music was a real blessing. God bless all of you for your hard work for God's and his people. Blessings
Yes, it was recorded because I had the album. I think it was recorded by the Alwyn Wall Band. And it WASN'T written about Christian organizations either. The song talks about being seduced by women and going into credit card debt. Looking after No. 1 is not the sentiment of ANY Christian organization. Just FYI. Thanks for posting this.
I first saw this on Subterranean MTV2 in March 2005.
same
Rare and precious.
Is there any more concert footage aside from what you've uploaded?
Great song. Makes me think of some of Steve Taylor's early stuff (Clone era)
Thank you Norms sister xx
Makes me laugh every time I see it than you God bless x
I saw them when I was 5 years old in NYC. I think it was their last show. They played at Piano's. I have a cool photo of me with the band after the show. FT
I first met this band as a friend of a members brother. Saw them once live. I really wish they would have made it. I still remember going to their loft in Brooklyn. Sup Tweaky.
Years ago in the mid 1970s I helped promote The Alywn Wall Band concert in Marshalltown Iowa.
Don Riggott OH YE I REMEMBER RIDING ON THE BUS WITH THOSE SCRUFFY ENGLISH BOYS WHO ATE NOTHING BUT POMMES FRITES AND PEAS EVERYDAY--GREAT GUYS WITH LOTS OF FUN--ALWYN WALL BAND-STEVE TURNER AND ME ALL ROAD THE BUS TOGETHER BETWEEN GIGS ON THAT EUROPEAN LEG OF THE WORLD TOUR
That is the Royal Palace in Oslo, known in Norwegian as Det Kongelige Slott. And that street image you were wondering about is a street called Grensen in Oslo, looking toward the Domkirke, or Oslo Cathedral. Here's approximately the same view from today. www.google.com/maps/@59.9136708,10.7436979,3a,75y,107.88h,94.99t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9FE3ohERJ3uN5AgWEGbytQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1 I used to live quite close to here from the mid '90s through early 2000s. Larry and I spent a LOT of time in Oslo over the years.
Through his music Larry has spoken to many and got them back on the road of LIFE. Good News.
This appears on Alwyn Wall's solo album "Invisible Warfare" entitled "I'm Alright Jack (the Greed Song)"
yes ya right also was played and recorded on friends on tour. when they first set up was called wild war.
Second track on the Friends on Tour album with the Barratt Band and Larry Norman.
Happy I at least got to meet them.
Fantastic! One of the best songs I ever heard ...
Definitely agree Nat, also surprised this was never a major hit. It was pre-loaded on my Creative Zen XFi but hard to find anywhere else, then finally found it here on youtube. Can listen to it over and over.
It's a hit with me ever since I first heard it on a random MP3 player my brother had...You can always find a bunch of good no name bands on an MP3 player so if you like the song I advise against getting rid of it...because you will probably NEVER find it again...unless someone has the same MP3 player and thinks enough of the songs to post them to CZcams which is how I found this one again. Yeah it was originally on a Creative ZEN player...Great Song...Listen to it all the time along with other songs also featured including... Secret Solitaire by Company Car, Tell Me Leza by The Living Blue, Radio (FCC Version) by Pittysing and Cost of Comfort by The Fully Down...all great songs...too bad the bands never hit it off...all EXCEPT for The Fully Down.
Should've been a huge crossover!
Is it just me? To my ears Barratt's solo in Hall of Mirrors sounds very similar to David Gilmore's solo in the Pink Floyd song Comfortably Numb. Hall of Mirrors predates the Floyd work by 3 years. :) One of my favorites from the hazy days of the mid 1970's.
Awesome!
"And Jesus, You're music to me, yeah!"
I saw this band live in CA--and I remember how great "That's Life" was live--really a great tune and they stretched and really rocked it out, which was rare back then. The LP version was great--but live, it was amazing!
Awesome. Thanks!!!!
In a just universe this would have been a monster hit.
barrett can sure play that guitar great stuff
Great. Still helping the flock
Brings back memories.
This was a great opportunity for the country to be exposed to a very talented young singer/songwriter, Paul Holmes. Hopefully we'll hear more from Paul in the near future.
