HERE & GONE (my father's ghost)
I wrote this maybe 20 years ago. It's about being haunted, but, in a nice way. He was known to all as Wally, being a contraction of his original Swedish Surname,
These are the lyrics, and my words, as true now as when I wrote it, maybe 25 years ago:.
There’s a ghost that haunts my days - in a look, a gesture - oh - a hundred ways
A brooding soul who dogs me still - from the pool of despair to the high of the hill
This was the man - when I was a child - with his piercing blue eyes - accusing and wild & strong brown hands - missing two fingers
Oh good lord - how his memory lingers
Here and Gone, Here and gone - Wally's still here 'though he's long gone
Let him go, or let him stay - It doesn't matter anytime or - anyway
Each day was a battle, every one - for that jealous man - who wouldn't call me son
to get his approval - I'd work and I'd fight - and he'd say not a word - but he'd cry in the night
(He said) "Faith, hope and charity: they're the needs of the weak - and love is a weakness so don’t ever speak”
“Never say sorry - it's shame, it's a crime” - and a child never cries, or needs help..... or time"
So let him go, let him stay - It prob'ly doesn't matter anyway
Who's to say, who's to tell - Wally's gone to heaven, or to hell
But the man grew old - and his body grew frail - his mind was confused, and his memory fail
And came there a time when he needed the hand - of the foolish child who'd become a man
And a bond it grew after stretching for years - between two men’s hearts both salted with tears
The old man died - but I'll never forget - he called for his “son” - it was ...the best ..... gift ...... yet
So who’s to say, who's to tell - Wally's gone to heaven, or to hell
Let him go, or let him stay - It doesn't matter anytime or anyway
The old man now is many years gone - but the son still feels him and the feeling’s so strong
The fears, and anger - the jealous rage - and the painful secrets - of another age
He did his best the only way he knew - knowing all who you love will be taken from you
He’s gone and dead but lives on in the head, and the heart of the son who carries his thread .......
And the ache in his back, the pain in his hands, his laugh, his words and his fears and plans
They belong to his father - but now -------------- he understands
Here and Gone, Here and gone - Wally's still here 'though he's long gone
Let him go, or let him stay - It doesn't matter anytime or - anyway.

Chord Changes? Learn with your eyes CLOSED!

WE DON'T PLAY GUITAR WITH OUR EYES - We play with our hands. Yes, we all look at our fretboard from time to time, but to do so can both spoil your posture, and delay the change ruining the rhythm. We need to form "muscle memory" of how our hands change chords, and this is what I recommend. I'm using the I,IV 7 V progressions in G and C , then I'm adding in another chord which comes from the 6th...

      Thank you. I don't get "called" to write songs like I did when I was younger. The notion of a Dad's song was a gift to me, and, yes it did prompt me to revisit my relationship with my Dad, which was not always easy, and he never spoke about his early life, which I heard from distant relations some time after. I think I rewrote it a couple of times, especially the last verse. Thanks for your interest.

    Excellent as always, but I hope you will forgive a small piece of pedantry. Martin in fact made dreads from 1916, just not under their own name, but branded for Ditson. So, technically it is true that you couldn't get a dread from Martin till 1931, Ditson could and you could get one from them! 😂 Oh, and by the way the Collings is richer and less bright - mind you, it is a good bit older.

      Hi Robert, you are correct of course, and thank you. I think that the first one was for a Hawaiian performer. Ditsons ordered a very small number but they didn't sell and then the company failed in , I think, 1929. I try to make videos of interest, and try to resist retelling the well documented Martin history.

  • @TheSingingDoctor325

    One thing I've noticed is when I play an intro/verse to a song in 2nd or 3rd position (and often with a muted strum or arpeggio) and then switch to the 1st position with louder strumming as I go into the prechorus & chorus, it creates changes to the energy & volume and distinct sections to the song. This keeps the music interesting to the listener and helps prevent me from becoming background music (which is fine for restaurants but not for bars or other gigs where people are there to see the musician).

    I prefer 45 mm or 46 mm nut width. HOWEVER, until you get to the boutique guitar market, almost ALL guitars of ALL types ALL have either a 43 mm or even a 42 mm nut width. This is INCREDIBLY frustrating, because almost ALL guitar makers have a 'ONE SIZE FITS ALL' strategy. Just imagine if you went into a shoeshop, only to be told: *'Sorry, sir, but we ONLY sell size 8 shoes. If you HAVE to have another size, then you'll have to get a shoemaker to make you a CUSTOM MADE PAIR OF SHOES. And then - and ONLY then - will you be able to buy shoes in your size.'* And yet our hands - just like our feet - come in different sizes. So much for the 'market' ensuring competition and diversity...

The Eastman in comparison is, I think superior which is a wonder considering that even at top Eastman price is less tan half the cost of a Collings. Thanks for watching.

    I had a Classical guitar and it was called a 3/4. Much easier to play (for me) than a 4/4 and about the size that they were in the mid-19th century before the need for volume became a big deal. Similarly, steel-string guitars initially had no need to be big & loud, as it was a parlour instrument. Subsequent changes seem to have been largely about volume, hence the dreadnoughts, jumbos, resonators & electrics. The "original" is fine by me.

      Hi Mark, I see that you are a well informed guitar as am I , and I agree with what you say. Thanks for watching.

    Love my Martin OO-15 Mahogany. No matter how many times I bring out my dreadnought, I find the OO has somehow wandered back to my lap.

    There are quite a few builders now making true parlours (i.e. sub size 0) - Santa Cruz, Collings, Froggy Bottom, Bourgeois, Atkin spring immediately to mind. I have the Martin 012-28 Modern Deluxe you mention in the video - it is a lovely guitar. I hadn't seen the Collings 00 in any of your videos before - is it new?

      Hi, my Collings 002h was acquired in October but it is a 1998 build. Thanks for asking.

    Loved seeing your guitars, Andy.. However, you didn't mention the OM (Orchestra Model), which I believe Martin introduced prior to the Dreadnaught. I have an OM-28, and it's dimensions are definitely different from a OOO.

      @SillyMoustache Před 10 dny

      The OM , intended as a dance band rhythm guitar for tenor banjo players emerged in 1929/30 was essentially the 000 Auditorium with the body shortened to reveal two extra frets and a thinner banjo like neck. (same scale). It was unsurpringly not a success and discontinued in 1933. they then took the 12 fret dreadnought and did the same thing. as of 1934. It also failed to compete with Gibson and Epiphone archtops in dance bands, but the thin necked dread found a home with folk and country players.

    Wait... I've played dreadnaughts my entire guitar-playing life and I almost always sit to play them. You just turned my life upside down lol

    I'm only 48 but my Martin D-18 is causing me nerve pain from my neck to my right shoulder. Whenever I play a thinner acoustic the problem disappears. But I LOVE my D-18! I'm looking at a Martin 000-28. It sounds and plays and feels amazing. Lacks the low end but makes up for it in every other way. Can't afford to drop $2.5K right now. Yikes!

    I have a budget Parlour(Cort) and a budget Concert(Fender) but have tended to consider 0 as Parlour and 00 as Concert and 000 as Auditorium models. The Grand Auditorium or 000, as it was also advertised,was almost the same size as a dreadnaught and I quickly moved it on as I am not really confortable with the larger models given I am sitting down player.

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache Před 10 dny

      Martin specs call the size 0a "concert" and the 00 a Grand Concert. Whilst many/most do, we tend to play dreads seated, but there are often comfort issues for some.

    • @skintslots
      @skintslots Před 10 dny

      @@SillyMoustache Interesting. Unfortunately it seems those specs have taken on a broad meaning nowadays among other manufacturers and made it difficult to pinpoint a particular size and brand a player would instantly find comfortable.

      Yes. I don't care for them as them bend under hand warmth and wear quite easily.
