Great video Den, I use the tube and the senko as a follow up, great idea about the beaver, do you peg your weight when you are following up, or do you want more of a natural fall and in peg it? also what’s your weight of choice for the beaver in that situation
Great vid!
Good to know. I’m all about downsizing lures. Thanks Den
Thank you sir for being a faithful watcher of my videos!
Look at Johnson silver Minnows, or Gold Color. You gotta pick through them, because " Nit brains" put to much or to little solder on hook or hook is crooked.
Thanks for pointing this out. I have noticed this recently with these lures.
@fishden365 Fishden, just wanted to make a further comment buddy! I would think with todays Technology, even on the cheap; Inexpensive tiny lazers like on a skill Saw, and or other Jig type metal, plastic fixtures.... That Bing Bong, could simply load them in the fixture and eveything would be nice and straight. The only learning curve would be, is to teach Dingus how to Solder. LMAO. Have a great Remainder of your Summer!; head on a swivel, and Never surrender your Gun!!!
You too Eugene, thanks.
Great place to get Crappie in winter. Was 20 degrees last time i was there but they kept biting. And i do the 2 dropshot rig you mentioned. works well.
I knew it would! Thanks for watching!
seems similar to the "Cheburashka Rig" This is a football head shape however so probably better.
very similar. Both have their time and place.
All good ideas. One thing that has worked for me over many years is to add a single trailer hook to the rear treble with a grub on it. It can give you extra insurance against a short striker. The grub also has a tantalizing action that gives it a bit of extra movement to the bait. As the popper or other hard bait comes to rest after a pop of the rod, the grub tail will move independently after the plug settles, often drawing a more vicious and targeted strike.
Good info, thanks. I never tried the grub but I have cut the back part of a tube and threaded that on the rear treble. It has a great appearance in the water. Might have to try this again sometime soon.
@@fishden365 The back part of a tube with those wiggly tentacles sounds even better than the grub. I will give it a try at the lake on tues. Thanks for the idea.
Yep. It does present a good look.
Solid advice. I never thought of throwing a tube as a f/u bait. I’m going to try it. Thanks
They work!
Hi Den, Do you put a weight on that Beaver in this circumstance? As always , thanks for sharing al of your knowledge. Also, been meaning to respond to your personal background; very impressive. Bottom line, get good at what you are doing. Highly agree.
Yes, I like a fast fall for that reaction strike. I typically use 1/2 or 3/4 oz weight on a texas rig. I also like to throw it on a drop shot with 1/4 or 3/8 oz weight. I use a short length drop of 4 to 6 inches.
Would a Brush Hog be another option for the discontinued HogTail?
The brush hog is a bigger bait but I believe it would work too. I like to throw the brush hog when I need to catch a big bass. It's a great bait.
I bought one of those in the early 80's when I worked at a sporting goods store. Yes I used it, yes I caught fish with it and yes I still have it and use it. I use it when the temp is right for my top water baits and I'm in an area that frogs are found. I always use a anap swivel and jave never had any of the issues you read about on Tackle Warehouse reviews. I would suggest giving it a try and see how it works for you personally. I never put mich into reviews. Never know what the conditions. Nobody says they were using it in the middle of a cold winter of they were fishing a Colorado River lake on a 106° day.
Good input Kim, thanks.
Love topwater Tuesday. Thank you for all the effort and time that you put into these videos. It was nice to run into you the other day and talk to you a little.
I enjoyed speaking with you as well. Hope to see you again out there.
This is my first time seeing your channel. This was excellent advice. I have subscribed. Rather than talking about baits or watching videos of someone catching fish, this type of video is so much more valuable.
Thanks Joel and thanks for subscribing.
Great video Den. I've done the same thing as you have re: different baits. Just focus on them and learn to master them...rather than trying to be an expert in everything. I've also done the same with my electronics. Just gone out on the water and learned how to use it, learned the optimum settings, learned what different things look like under water, etc. I'll bet you the majority of the people that have (good) electronics on their boats don't know how to use them to their fullest capability. That never made sense to me. They spend thousands on their electronics and they don't know how to use it. They won't admit that though. So, they badmouth it and say it's overrated or it's no good. You gotta know what you're looking at and for, with your electronics, or you're wasting your time. It doesn't matter how proficient you become with any lures, you're not going to catch fish if you're not on them.
Absolutely true, all of it. Interestingly, I have been putting more time in with my electronics lately.
Fished a Karashi for the first time yesterday. Caught a one pounder on it. It blew up on it 6’ from the bank. I had it tied straight braid to bait and didn’t get the action I was expecting. I will be adding a flouro leader next time, and probably a loop knot. I will say I was surprised how well it casts considering it is only 4.6 grams.
It's a great little bait!
Great video. Thank you for sharing how you grew up. I am one year older than you and remember all those games also. Thank you for putting all the time into fishing and helping people learn how to fish better. I had to laugh because that is the way I started out fishing with a stick string hook and a worm and I would tie a little twig on for a bobber and go down to my local Creek. I wish I stuck with it like you did. Now that I am retired I am back into it. I am now located up by lake wallenpaupack. Thank you. just curious how old you were when you got your first boat
Hi Arlin, I convinced my dad to buy a canoe in 1978 when I was 15 years old and I got my first boat in 1993 when I was 30.
Awesome video Den. I like the stories as much as the on the water videos.
Thanks Jim!
this is an insanely good video great stories and the way they tied into fishing top tier hooked on every word i’m doing this with spoons now (ironically) because i know it’s not something used in a lot of these ponds so i been hopping on temu buying entry level spoons and throwin em and i actually love them so i’ve begun changing my tackle to better use them i guess that’s how specializing begins eh
Yes indeed. Thank you sir.
Thanks Den, What I like to do is listen to your advice. I must improve on learning how to read the body of water and not to fish so much dead water.
That is true for all of us.
Great video Den. I was at Egypt Meadow a few weeks ago, that's a great place. I try to learn a new lure every year too. Last year I tried frogging in heavy cover and had limited success so this year I'm working on toads... Elaztech and a smaller bait... It's going much better :)
Thanks Mike. Toads are awesome!
you gotta be disciplined when walking that deep mile and quit fishin at a decent point WELL before you’re mentally and physically exhausted that walk back can be a nightmare so don’t bite off more than you can chew when you start that hike on a crisp 6am morning 11am-3pm is comin right behind it😮
Excellent point! Thanks.
A Zoom Fat Albert makes a great trailer on that little buzzbait. Tight lines everyone.
Great idea! Thanks Blessed One.
I switched to the smaller size last year and had great success on the rivers with it. Stay Safe & God Bless!! 🤠👍🏻
Thanks, I am sure there will be times when that bait is killer!
Thanks for sharing this info!
You bet
whot is the name of ;olor zou used for silikon frog -
Green Pumpkin if you are referring to the horny toad.
Great stuff as always Den. My son loves frog/ toad fishing as much as i do and i will forward your video to him, knowing there lots of great tips that he can use in Southeast Pa. Cheers
Thanks Dave. Let me know if you are available to fish with some time.
Great tips! Always enjoy your content!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Great video Den a lot of great information. I was curious when you die the ends. What dye do you use. Do you use a scented or just a plain unscented dye.
Unscented whenever I can find it. Not crazy about garlic scent.
My favorite and best producer is the the spitting image .,, I love the zig zag action and what I can do with the bait second is the Yamamoto pencil Tate 76 size it’s small and mighty and has an effortless walk the dog almost swimming action,,
Interesting choices. I will have to look into the Yamamoto bait. Thanks.
Great video packed with useful tips. Thanks Den!
Thank you sir.
Thanks for sharing those tips!!! Very helpful!! What's the rod set up that you use for the toad? Stay Safe & God Bless!!! 🤠👍
I use a Dobyns Fury FR704C 7 ft baitcast rod, heavy fast action for Horny Toad fishing. Great rod for the technique and does not break the bank.
@@fishden365 Thanks for the reply. I have the Dobyns FR734C. Do you use braid?
yes 50 lb straight braid, dark green.
@@fishden365 👍👊🤠
Putting it on a spinnerbait. Helps u skip the spinnerbait in muddy water
Nice!
I wish I had remembered the bottom of the three lakes I do 90% of my bass fishing 100% from shore are almost entirely soft bottoms covered in thick silt and mud with very little rock or hard bottom Because I went out and bought well over $150 in jigs and jig trailers only to discover Id be dragging my jigs through a thick mud lake bottom which is not that productive of a presentation for jigs I made five solid dedicated all day trips to my most fished lakes to learn how to jig fish Each time it was the same three hours of jig fishing no bites jigs come back covered in bottom slime Tried greenpumpkin, Watermelon, black blue jigs 1/4oz, 5/16oz, 3/8oz and 1/2oz Then switch to any weedless soft plastic fluke or swimbait worked as a jerk bait or a bladeded jig in sane exact areas and murder the bass Bottom dragging Jigs just dont work in my thickly muddied bottom lakes closest to my home and skipping them off the bottom is ok but I catch a lot more bass using a weedless fluke worked as a jerk bait Some lakes just aren't made for bottom dragging or hopping jigs my lakes are just such lakes Im sure if I owned a boat I could find offshore areas in the lakes I fish, jigs would be very productive in but unfortunately I do not own a boat. I envy those that do
There are other types of jigs. If your body of water has fallen trees or brushpiles, an arkie style jig works well there. I have weeds then a cone shaped jig should get the nod. Swimming jigs are another option.
You sold me on the swing head jig and the 420 California Craw a while back. I love it. Have not had much success with the hula grub but I’ll try it on a 1/2 ounce jig. Always great stuff. Thanks
I remember John. Question for you. Are you catching as many fish on the swing head jig as when you first started? Also, how deep do you fish it?
@@fishden365 mostly 15-20 feet and definitely on rock piles. I have not caught anything on it yet this year but I thought that it might be too early and fish are hiding in grass; but you certainly know better than me. I have given it a shot every time I go out ( usually twice a week). Hopefully it picks up. What about you this year on the swing head?
I have caught several largemouths on it at Nocks in 8 - 12 ft of water so far this year. As the year progresses, I will fish deeper with it.
What line do you recommend?
depends on water clarity. If stained I use 20 or 30 lb braid with 15 or 20 pound fluoro leader. From there the clearer the water the light lines I use.
Solid advice Den. Your other video on wobble (swing) heads was outstanding. Very comprehensive. I encourage everyone to go watch it.
Thanks Blessed One!
lol you say no fish can resist ,but no caught fish? I'm still buying
I have caught several bass and pickerel on this bait. On a disappointing note, I have not caught any hybrids on it during the alewife spawn at night...

Bill Norman Top Dollar is hard to find :)
Indeed it is. I want to contact them and ask them to do another run.
Rig it like a Banjo Minnow! Try it, and you'll be very surprised. I believe it'll tear less. The action will be lifelike, and unhindered. Even the bigger sizes will be effective with the bait rigged like the Banjo Minnow
That is literally how I rigged it in this video.
@@fishden365 that's awesome, my apologies. Very cool
The only thing I don't like about them is every color has the same tail. They should have matched the tail to the bait.
My thoughts exactly. Totally agree. Also, I like feathers better than tinsel.
Good video!!! Hey just a suggestion go out on the water and get some content..and turn up on’em . And then make some shorts ✌️
I hear ya. Was hard to do with my schedule. Should be doing more of this soon.
Dude get your fat fingers out of the way and hold it still so someone can see what the hell your doing. It looks like a magic trick. Just saying.
In my experience the spinning is caused by debris and gunk getting stuck in the propeller ...soon as I cleaned it up really good the spinning stopped..not sure if that was the case with yours but maybe this can help 👍🏻 check for dried up weeds and grass
Thanks, I did check for debris and found some but the bait still spun. This might be because the hooks may not have been original as I found the bait. They were small but with a long shank. Anyway, I was happy to change them out because I should get better hook ups on larger fish.
My favorite top water lure right now.
Thanks Frank
the 60 size is my favorite . i have not had the trouble with the bait spinning with the stock hooks . it is a smallmouth killer it has also put some large musky in the boat for me thanks for sharing love me some topwater Tuesday will keep in mind if i have problems with spinning that a hook size change might help.
Hi Victor, I am not sure the bait I found had stock hooks on it. They were small but with a rather long shank. Anyway the upgrade I did will provide better hook ups with larger fish.
I fish the size 60 quite a bit it works great!
Nice!
Nice size crappie
