Speak to mark Williams at spekva uk. I’m sure he could advise
Cheers mate, just checked them out! I will give them a call
hi mate that is brush with a wire brush and i would defo say it is stained oak👍
Thanks mate I will give it a go with the brush. I think I am going to try and get the finish with ammonia as suggested by someone else! Mainly because I can then put a clear coat epoxy over it. Worse case scenario I have a finish that will do it. Appreciate the help
@@Wattsjoinerybarn dont know if you know but you use the ammonia by pouring it into a jug / bowl and put it in a enclosed space with you job and leave it. the ammonia will fume the wood making it go darker. Ammonia stinks and its very hazardous, if you breath it in it will blow you head off so don't be tempted to sniff it when you take the lid off. When you've got the job in with the ammonia you need to keep checking it for colour, oak can go really dark so keep a eye on it and after you remove the job from the ammonia let it breath for a hour or so before you put any finish on as it can react with the finnish if you do it too quick 👍
@@martyn1678 yes mate. I wasn’t actually going to fume it, I was going to trial some different pieces by brushing it on in different strengths. I have done it before and it worked well, i have also done it with wire wool and vinegar solution. Luckily I have lots of time to mess with samples. Thanks for reminding me about leaving it before applying a Finish. I had been caught out with that before! As I say tho worse case I will just stain it with some tinted varnish solution I have.
@@Wattsjoinerybarn well i've never brush it on, we always use it through fuming , sounds like you have a plan i wish you good luck👍
I am gonna film it so we will find out! Will give you a shout out if brushing it on goes wrong 😂
Fantastic watch
Appreciate ya, thanks 🙏
Wire brush for the grain and a bit of ammonia for the finish.
Love it, thanks ❤
I normally use a wire brush( brass) to dig out the grain (go with the grain) and this creates the deep grain your looking for.
I've done that grain effect with a wire brush brush with the grain.
Thanks.🙏 I will have a play now!
Make sure it's a brass one though as the steel ones will react with the oak and leave black marks 👍 Love your channel by the way Lee
Thanks mate, very kind to say! Yes well said! I have had my fair share of nasty black stains on oak. Some of the pattern on this oak is quite dark and I wonder if that’s what they did then sanded it out.
That was a big in ……… nice to see you back
Thanks man, hope business and life is 👍🏻
Fascinating. The finish was absolutely top notch. Never used Renner paint but definitely gonna give it a go. Really good looking job, well done mate.
I can’t compare it to any other professional paint system but I never thought I would be able to get this level of finish with waterbased! Thanks for watching ❤
Nice one bud congratulations on the over 1k subs , Graham
Cheers Graham, thanks for noticing❤ Got the Ferrari on order!
Another great watch, thanks Matt
Still smashing g through the videos then 🫡 thanks for checking back in🙏
What a lovely job!! Love the hyper OCD level of detail you go into to get a great result....Pity I can't access Renner paints here....
Don’t know where you are but I know renner sell through a company called symphony coatings. Really glad you enjoyed it and thanks for checking back in.
@@Wattsjoinerybarn South west Ireland...I can't seem to find an Irish supplier🥲
@MrCassbren shame, tbh I have heard that they are all much the same once you start getting into the specialist suppliers like morells etc. I have only ever used DIY like johnstones and farrow and ball etc. the difference is amazing
O I totally agree with you on that..for a top notch job you need to use a professional grade of material from the start to the finish...paint is something that I really focus on because let's face it, it's the only thing many people notice...details are lost on an awful lot of people 😅
💯 that’s why I hold all my customers to ransom and painfully explain every detail and struggle I had before I leave their house😂
Looks great. Top notch and you went for 6 hinges.
Good detail spot! Yes mate, always think it’s criminal to not include an extra hinge, even if you are paying £4 per hinge. I have started doing them 65/75mm from top and bottom too which Makes a huge difference !
@@Wattsjoinerybarn enjoyable videos buddy.

Absolutely stunning job, well done 👏
Thankyou mate. Did come out nice 👍🏻
Great job Matt and some useful tips too. Good to see you posting again, it's been a while!
Thanks Eddie. May start doing a bit more. Hope all is well.
looked sweet 👍👍

Your choice fella. Never been sent anything but thanks for wishing they don’t ! It’s no doubt a real valuable use of your energy👍🏻
"Promo SM"
Have you considered using a " ticking stick"?
Hi Dan. Can’t say I use it a lot but I do if it’s just for shapes with no scribe, also would have meant lots of drawing on boards and rubbing out as I used the same board for a house full of window boards, really good for parallelograms. In this instance I was more bothered by the side cheek scribes and the scribes on the back of the horns. It’s a great suggestion tho and I have an old systainer which I put scribing and measuring tools in which I take with me when quoting and installing. I will definitely cut a spare ticking stick and wack it in there. Thanks for watching
As I understand a fox wedge is in a blind mortise. But it's still wedged
Ah didn’t realise it was specifically for a blind mortice! I was only shown fox wedging a few times and it was always for different tasks but the history of it was never explained. Interesting❤ thanks for watching
It's always good to keep evolving techniques as times goes by. I like your honesty and the pencil sharpener to make the points on the draw bores. I was taught a rime/ditty when I was an apprentice regarding drilling draw bores which went " A 16th closer to the face brings the joint up into place" and I've always remembered that. Regarding Domino's for windows and doors, I think I may have posted on the previous video you did. For me the Domino is excellant for interior work but exterior Joinery needs to face all the weather we get so temperatures from -10 to +35, dry Summers to wet Winters etc. When you look at a 9" door bottom rail and someone puts 3 large domino's in it to hold it together they forget the spaces between the dominos which can only rely on glue to prevent water ingressing in from the front of the door through to the back of the door joint. I've seen a few external doors where the domino's have held in one side but the glue has failed and water passes through the joint. If you look at dowel jointed external doors which are pretty dire they do at least have a profile ans scribe joint running the length of the rail which does help a bit to prvent water ingress. Imagine over time an external doors in all weathers ,slamming shut etc and a floating tenon/Domino relying on glue and friction in my opinion just won't last more than a few years. Enough of my ramblings , keep up the good work, loving the swallows too. All the best Ade
Hi Ade Oh yes I remember! It was your comments that made me think if I bring it out again I better put a dowel in it😂 Funny enough I nearly put a scribe joint in this window but un till it was made I was unsure of how the domino would sit against a scribed piece but an afterwards I realised I could have jus used a spacer as the XL domino goes pretty deep. I do agree with you on the theory of what yu are saying and well believe you have seen failed doors especially on a 9inch bottom rail! As i have sold my morticer I guess I would uses the domino as a morticer and then a domino profile maker or round over bit in the spindle moulder to make large floating tenons to combat this. not sure on your thoughts there as there would be no gap then between the dominos. Anyway at least we both can enjoy the swallows! thanks so much for watching again☺ all the best Matt
@@Wattsjoinerybarn Hi Matt, Good to hear from you. I think what you suggest regarding wider Domino's so you get rid of the gaps would be a good idea ,especially if you no longer have a morticer. I know Whitehill tooling do a spindle cutter for making domino's so it may be worth checking out. Hope you're busy Matt and life is good. Keep us updated on the swallows and how many chicks they raise. All the best Ade 🙃
@AdrianSams cheers Ade. I actually made some smaller sapele dominos for some exposed domino drawer boxes a few years back and the round over was quite easy with a standard bit and 4 passes but no groove lines obviously. Tempted by the cutters so will try and please you with something like that if I do another external job. Might try and do a bird cam for the kids so could get some of that. Thanks again for the comments, plenty on my end hope the same for you. Matt
@@Wattsjoinerybarn Hi matt, I put some cameras in some nesting boxes I made. Amazing to see them build the nest and a pair of Blue tits actually decorated around the nest with coloured sheeps wool and flower petals. I'd never believed it until I saw it. Great for kids to see too but the downside is we had one year where the mother didn't come home and the chicks died one night. Nature is amazing and cruel at the same time. Plenty of work on so I'm making hay whilst the sun shines. 😊
@@AdrianSamsjust rewatched my video and realised I cut the bit out where the swallows whipped past my head to get out! Don’t know how! Gutted.
I'm so sorry for your loss. When our companions are taken from 6 hearts are devastated.
Yes 12 years with me every. Will never forget him. Thanks
Hello what sort of hours do you generally put in when you are working in the workshop .cheers
Hi mate. Tbh I have no set hours and have a busy schedule with my kids. It’s very rare for me to work weekends but I will do the odd late one(normally a Friday🤦🏻♂️) i used to work all hours but realised there is no point in doing it if you can’t have an early finish or day off mid week! Thanks for watching 😎
Thanks for sharing ....I would never have thought of mitre folding MDF..I've just started a job where I'm going to steal one of your ideas and use dominos for doing the scribes for alcove cabinets. I'm a bit the same as you in that I obsess about the finishes so much that I think I worry far too much, the customers never seem to appreciate the effort gone into the perfect finish..
Yeah that domino thing works well. Frustrates me that the size scale on the 500 is not the actual measure but once you know you know. I nearly always mitre fold mdf so have systems in my head to make it quick. Sounds like you will get it spot on. Thanks so much for watching
I think most people in this line of work agonise over the details that 9 times out of 10 the customer won't notice in a million years. The problem is we do see them and think everyone else will. Plus there's always that 1 in 10! I think you just have to find a balance that your happy with and crack on. Otherwise every job would take an age and we'd be living in a cardboard box 😂. At the end of the day if the customer is happy then that's all that matters. It's still something I struggle with and I'm certain it costs me money on every single job I do but we all have things we just can't let slide.
100% mate. Hope your well Matt
@@_nacnud_..we all have the urge to strive for excellence and to continue to be better than we were yesterday. I don't stress too much about the customer but I stress over the standards I would like to achieve. That said,I think that you are dead right and 9/10 never notice the things that the maker sees 😅😅
@@MrCassbren 100% agree. Which is why it's always annoying as most of the time it's something that you could have avoided with a bit better planning/focus etc
Great job Matt loved the design , long, med or short videos don’t matter just enjoy doing it , that’s the main thing ,
Thanks Graham. I appreciate that❤
Thanks Matt for a great job. My wife and I are really pleased with what you have made for us. Anyone who sees it thinks it's fantastic. It has definitely achieved the wow factor that we were looking for; a real statement piece. We both appreciate your attention to detail, which shows in the final product. Thanks again!
Thanks Eddie I am glad you and Pat like it. As I discussed with you when I was there. It was great to be given the opportunity to do something away from the norm! You were Both a pleasure to work for.
Hi mate cracking job! What spray system do you use please also what paint
Ha ha. I am not gonna get the name wrong again! My sprayer is in the description in the tools section😂 I use renner water based 43:24 is where I list the paint codes. I also use that with the m407 crosslinker from renner. I actually stopped using the crosslinker but then I had a problem with the drying on this job which I put up on another video! I have basically worked out that I don’t need too much fresh air when drying as it gets rid of the heating element so I just recirculate the warm air and it dries in about 1 hour and I lay it on heavy! With the primer I do one tight coat then a heavy coat then sand. I have learnt not to de nib waterbased primers/fillers untill they have had all their coats. Topcoats it’s supposed to be a one coat system but I always do 2 and denib in between. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.
another great watch, really enjoyed that
Ha ha, thanks mate! Wondered if you were still on board, you need to have a real strength of character for the long videos so well done😂 Cheers for watching
Sounds like we basically using the same products really like the base coat as takes to sanding back well. Topcoat sprays and finishes so well. Like the graco as just have the gun to clean out.
Yes mate and really quick disassembly. I am toying with seeing if a cheap knock off gun will work for priming or lacquer.
900 subscribers in a year is pretty good don't lose faith give it another 3 months and you will get there I can totally understand that it is work on top of work but I think you you can make it. Your a Chippy so you know all about hard work and disappointment. YOU CAN MAKE IT
Thanks man. I am proud of how far I got without faking drama I will also continue but I just don’t know in what way yet! Weekly is good as I don’t get too lost in what I have filmed or said but it’s intense. I may try a few short ones. Thanks for watching
Great video 👍🏻 use the same sprayer perfect for my needs. And also love the renner water based paints Did you say you use a hardener as well? Is that just in the top coat?
Thanks mate . Once you get used to getting volume out the sprayer I think it offers way more control and options than the airless! What primer and top coat model do you use and what needle size? I am using #5 with 643 and #4 with 762 I am loving the renner paints but not the crazy ordering system or numbers! I use 407 crosslinker (probably said it wrong In the video)in topcoats which I was informed does make it harder! I have a kitchen coming up which I will be using waterbased but using the 402 hardener system and a different top coat. It’s only on bad mdf I would consider a hardener or crosslinker in the primer! But I am in no means an expert in this! I am hoping once I get some reach on this channel I can spend a day with a CZcams sprayer to pick up some waterbased tips! That being said I am getting great results with renner! Thanks so much for watching😊
very nice. not heavy looking
@herbertthecat thanks for saying. I spent a fair bit of time considering the metal profile sizes and oak thicknesses, think it turned out well! Thanks for checking back in
You’re spot on mate! Is what it is tho and i havnt really got the knack of doing anything short. Maybe I will get it one day! Thanks for watching.😊
I enjoy watching long format videos because I do the same work as you. Bradshaw joinery used to do the long format in depth videos but struggled getting traction. He switched to a vlog style shorter format and saw an increase in viewers etc. I may be wrong because I don't make videos but find it a shame when skilled guys are not getting the views they should. Cheers. Tim

Just do what your happy with Matt. I think most of us just enjoy your content regardless of length or regulatory of videos. Like this one I just watched in a few hits, makes no difference to me. Don't be too hard on yourself about subscribers either. CZcams is a strange beast and I think you have to play the game to a certain extent to get your numbers up. I think you've decided how you want to play that game and to be honest I like your approach. I always find things in your videos that resonate with me so just keep doing what your doing however you want to do it 😂
@_nacnud_ thanks mate, that really came at a good time for me to read. I think I started it half out of boredom and half curiosity. I need to remember it goes where it goes. Thanks for the kind words
Great video matt just out of interest. whats your thoughts on a delwat mobile thicknesser ie bench top
Hi mate, thanks. I had the dewalt one 2blade and it’s brilliant. Also had the triton one which is good. You can make a sled/jig which you can use to flatten one side so you don’t need a planer.
Glad you got it sorted Matt. I had a very similar thing a couple of days ago. Was loading the van for a wardrobe install and noticed one of the doors had a couple of large imperfections in it that I'd completely missed. Luckily I could leave that one door and get on with the rest of the job but I was already massively behind and these things take the wind out of your sails don't they? I agree with the one man band comment. I find it very hard sometimes as unless you are a big company / customer spending hundreds or thousands every month a lot of them aren't interested. Plus it's not even like you've got someone else to sort whilst you get on with something else. I'm definitely going to try the Renner on my next job. Did phone them and speak to them the other week. Very nice but as I'm a sole trader they won't sell to me direct so I'll have to go through Symphony or someone else. Did ask about the primer and of course they stopped short of saying I could use others. But that was a sales guy, obviously your rep is a rogue! Enjoy your holiday, I've not been on a board for about 10 years but you can't beat it!
Thanks mate. I am Going to stick with their primer anyway and force dry. As soon as it touches dry it stacks so there is no worries there! One thing to remember about skiing or snowboarding is every year you don’t go is another year you have to wait! My boys at 12 and 10 and can pretty much do it all now so worth the effort!
@@Wattsjoinerybarn My eldest is only 7 but maybe one day! Where you off to?
Zell am see Austria. Took my eldest boys to bansko,Bulgaria. When they were 8 and 10 so they could have lessons as it was cheap. Highly recommend bansko with the kids on an all inclusive or full board.
@@Wattsjoinerybarn always heard good things about Bulgaria. I was actually pretty shit hot riding when I was younger but then just fell out of it. Wife used to ski a lot when she was younger too so would be nice to get back in to it some day. Have a great time and switch off for a bit 👍🏻
Good luck with the Job !!!! Enjoy your holiday !!!!!
Thanks mate. Glad your still watching
Good vid Matt. The struggle is real sometimes, these things always happen when you're up against it for time. I got the renner clear coat and it seems good. How do you find the colour matching from renner? Do you use colour swatches for your clients to choose? I ask as I've had nightmares with that in the past. Anyway enough of that, more importantly enjoy the snowboarding. 👍
I go direct to renner and apparently their colour match is a lot better than symphony. Personally it’s always been good enough but I always put a disclaimer in. It’s kind of like you can have FnB paint and be spot on colour but renner is more durable and 99%there colour wise. I should really offer swatches from say FnB but the books harder to get now so I just get them to pick what colour they want and get their own samples! Plus sometimes people want little green, mylands etc. Thanks gonna make the most of the break!
Cool video mate, Subbed.
Nice one., thankyou
Hi Matt I’ve given your number to brother in law he wants a arched opening window
Ah. Yes think he’s been in touch! Many thanks, hope all is well.
Great to see you back Matt! Hope all is well.
Thanks mate. Appreciate it ❤
Tips & Trick's Brilliant
❤ thanks for watching
Where have you been, I've been missing my Watts fix 😆
Ha ha, no where exciting!
I set a finished height marginn on the frame then put an off cut of window board with a horn to the mark and mark a level line a long the reveals and on the corner of the reveal mark under the horn then I cut the plaster out with a multi tool, cut the window board bigger and slide it in that way there's no bead of caulk or crack lines.
Yes mate multi tooled out before. These were on gypliner brackets and bouncing all over the place. I would have lost the bottom fixing if I multi tooled out but I do agree it’s a better finish . Thanks for watching
Good to see you back. Thanks for the help with the paint 👍
Nice one mate. Nearly messaged you the other day as I had a problem with my finish and renner were all over it with helping me fix it! (My issue) can’t recommend them enough!
Nice one Matt. I do similar when scribing 3 sides. Although i tend to use strips of 6mm mitre bonded together to form one template. They can be a bit delicate to move about but it does the scribing and measuring in a oner. Plus if you only use a few drops of adhesive you can often pull them apart and reuse the other straight edge of the strips for the next one. And I've always got smaller bits knocking about the workshop from cutting cabinet backs etc. Keep up the good work pal
Yes mate I have tried that with a hot glue gun. It works well and great for angles. These walls were lumpy bumpy! Skirting boards were hard work too. I can’t stand lazy plastering! Thanks for watching, hope alls well
Nice to see ya back bud , thanks for the info
Thanks mate. Hope your well
You just saved me a lot of money. I was going to buy the entire LR32 kit. By the looks of it's unnecessary. Thanks
In my eyes yes! My kit actually fits in the of1400 router box too! If you buy it which I do recommend remember to always travel the router in the same direction. Key but info that! Thanks for watching 🙏
@@Wattsjoinerybarnthat is an excellent tip. I would be driven mad by wobbly shelves. I haven't seen a video on the LR32 explaining this occurrence. Tolerance buildup is a thing that doesn't get talked about.
Well said
cracking video as usual , which model extractor do you use ,?
Very kind of to say! In a sorta semi pro move all my tools are listed in the description! If you mean the workshop extractor its Jet with an Axminster cyclone box and custom cupboard.
sorry matt , i meant your festool site extractor
Ah. It’s the midi, fits well in the side door with the kapex and table saw and benches. It fills up quick but in prefer the hose storage and size over the bigger ones. Really need to get the Bluetooth remote too! Thanks so much for watching
