Is "Concept Creep" Making Mental Health Stigma Worse? w/Dr. Nicholas Haslam
Dr. Nicholas Haslam and Joe discuss concept creep - "the process by which harm-related topics experience semantic expansion to include topics which would not have originally been envisaged to be included under that label" - and its implications on how we talk and think about mental health.

    This is brilliant rhetoric. He's adressing the audience as what they should be, and probably what they know they should be, and probably what they aspire to be. Not only does this atract more critical thinkers to veiw his content, it also invites his current audience to engage with his videos critically. He is litterally creating critical thinkers by calling his audience a criticle thinker and then outlining what that means. Weather you agree or not with this definition of critical thinking, its brilliant because he is selecting for an audience that will respond in the way that he wants. (Im not implying that hes being manipulative. This is just how effective rhetoric works, and i think this short is brilliant).

    Perhaps people are using mental health language as a way to cope with the existential angst caused by loss of purpose and increasing income inequality in society.

    I'm not a psychotherapist. But, being the target of several of the evil, selfish, inconsiderate, immature, thieving and hate filled "narcissistic" cons. I must say I'm never going to stop using the word because, it doesn't offend the empaths while, those with unchecked or called out NPD quickly project narcissism back onto me. I'm okay with that. It saves a lot of time and painful experience by raising the flags quickly and establishing the boundaries they would have ignored (will still ignore them completely) but, now they know I'm onto them for who they are and I know I can expect to see retaliation and an army of blind brain washed dummies to smear me or even harm me. It's happened. Talking about it is good but, get away fast from the ones offended by the term and the more the term is emphasized in everyday conversation the better our chances of reaching that 3 out of 100 that realizes the truth of who they are, doesn't like the person they really are, and begin the difficult steps to restarting their way of thinking. The other 97 are the reason we have certain protection rights under attack constantly and many policing agencies are out of control Narcissistic Tyrrants that seek to make criminals out of law abiding working class people with families and responsibilities in order to seperate us from our money in the name of "revenue" that fills the coffers of those they blindly follow orders from. Truth. We can't sugar coat NPD. Many are very homicidal and seething inside to hurt someone they can't destroy out right with ease. Again, I know. I have the bullet scar in my back and stomach. And I know the trauma of asking her why she killed me and gettting no answer. Just cold eyes waiting and watching me die. Nothing in them resembling a soul. So, just find out any way you can; as fast as you can. If they have more than one of the NPD characteristics...RUN as FAST as you can!!!

    I agree that men should feel represented in all spaces, and as such be able to voice their opinions, that they have a lot to offer. I have four brothers and work as the only woman on a team of 12 people. Men are not universally better at dealing with playful teasing, nor taking criticism, that's not my experience at least. Oftentimes, they seem better at pushing one another to do well and learning from one another. Do women side with their female friends too easily after a breakup and criticise the partner? Um, I hope that they side with them, because they're friends (so that's normal, healthy bias...i.e. men do it too, believe me, big time) and in terms of criticising...maybe, I don't do it. I don't think that's a gender thing. I would just say that women can learn healthy competition from men, fearlessness around assertive dialogue...I find what he says here a bit wrong-headed. Maybe it's cultural, he is a different age and nationality to me.

    Unfortunately, getting the right fit with a therapist is just like finding the right doctor. I think she is way off base with her assumptions. I've had to go through way too many therapists because the one's I've dealt with just sit back and let me talk without giving me much feedback! I literally had to ask them to give me feedback on what I'm telling them, they didn't provide tools, techniques etc etc they were a bunch of lazy frickin therapists! I've had to research tools and techniques over the years and practice them to actually gain the knowledge and skills I need to better myself. Currently, I have two therapists. One is excellent while the other is good. 😊 But it took a lot of patience for me to find them.

    Unfortunately alot of us live in chaotic environments- I’d love to start meditating but I know it’s almost impossible for me to truly unlock all of its benefits in my situation. I think therapy gives people an escape from their environments and because it’s an actual safe space for those who need it. While I wish meditation was more practical for the average person I think therapy is more effective.

    Diagnoses are indeed not life sentences. My trauma healing journey started with a diagnosis for MDD (I was in psychodynamic therapy and not getting any diagnosis but I asked for one to not get kicked out of my master's program from not having met the required credits in the first year), which gave me something to work with in terms of using the diagnosis to find psychoeducational content on CZcams to learn about it and lead me to finding Dr. Rami Nader's channel. His videos on goal setting for people with depression, and defeating depression by consistently achieving goals gave me actionable steps to work with, and made me feel empowered and that I could improve my mental health.

    I think it's an absolute normal behaviour. Even adults can't just sit and listen for a long time... Also these kids are used to play and move sround and are now supposed to do a 180° degree flip over night? U think an adult can do this? Also a lot of people learn best when moving. And do you know adults who can't just take a break in silence and are husseling all the time?

  • @colleenhudson2096
    @colleenhudson2096 Před měsícem

    I would be asking about electronics usage at home. If electronics are being used to entertain and pacify the child for long periods of time it would stand to reason that the behavioural issues aren't being seen at home. I feel electronics use is having a detrimental impact on childrens ability to focus, learn and behave at school as, without the constant high and instant gratification electronics provide, children become bored and understimulated.

  • @jenniferfuentes3722
    @jenniferfuentes3722 Před měsícem

    Ask of this behavior is present in any other setting -- you mentioned not at home which decreases or eliminates ADHD as a diagnosis. I would ask at what age or grade the behaviors started. Is the behavior present for one specific subject in school? Has it impacted their academics? Has the child complained of any other children or are they afraid or angered by any one of their peers? And of course, have them do a check up with a PCP. If there's no medical reason for the behavioral concerns. Identify possible learning delays. Encourage use of tutoring. Then possibly rule out any trauma history (bullying or at home). And honestly the rest will focus on helping the kid develop the coping strategies needed for adjusting to higher expectations at school.

    In late '90s, when my son was in first grade, he displayed similar symtoms. School tried saying he had ADHD. Instead, he had a visual perception issue. His eyes were not able to focus quickly enough from the board to paper and back. A year of intense therapy training his eyes to focus was the cure. I'm a huge advocate to have a child tested for visual perception issues by a specialist before being medicated for ADD/ADHD.
