"Almost Nothing is an amazing and completely unexpected achievement. It’s a story with epic sweep that is apt to put you in mind of War and Peace and Doctor Zhivago. And, as it braids together the brilliance and cruelty of the twentieth century, it is told with a steadiness of vision that is breathtaking. A book you will want to get your hands on." -Robert Hass, US Poet Laureate, 1995-1997, Pul...

One of my favorite authors since my early college days.
Long time favorite LP still in my collection somewhere.... The "free with tea" song is one my own mother sang frequently, including when I was much older. She may have said "I'd rock you to sleep if I could find a big enough rock." Great to find this here where I can share it with far-away friends... But a question just came to me -- Is that Lyn Hardy singing harmony, or Rosalie over-dubbed, or both?
Love her. Saw/ heard her in person.
Beautiful.🙏
I appreciate this video so much! Thank you!
Where can we buy your molds?
It’s funny I am 49 now and my mom took me to a concert at the EMU in Eugene at about 7 years old. I turned to my mom and said everyone would want a baby. Many years later I saw Rosalie at the Kate Wolf festival and wanted to tell her that story.
So your a grave robber. The skulls are offering theif they are art that you stole.
Far out
I sang this to my first baby 30 years ago!!! Thank you for a sweet trip down the years!!!
Vida e história fantástica. Parabéns!!
Fascinating!
Prescient, as always. It is a sad state things are in now, 4 years later.
Thank you all for digging into the extraordinary world of Ann Savoy with us. What a woman, what a creative force, what a musician and loving soul.
A heart nourishing mini autobiography! Well accompanied by your drawings. And the glimpses of music!
Why is RACE or nationality an issue? How do you know she is "white" How BIGOTED AND RACIST
Thank you for making this video. This event needs to be remembered in this way.
Great song ... popularized when covered by Paul Kantner on the debut Jefferson Starship album in 1970.
A wonderful book and lovely video! I thought the music might be Chopin, but am charmed to see that it is Zygmunt Micielski. Another discovery. Thank you.
I love Celia Cruz 😍😍😍
For anyone who comes here thinking about eating them...YOU CAN ITS JUST SUPER UNHEALTHY UNLESS YOU'RE MAKING SMALL ONES. Not everyone is the same there are ppl who make them as treats for the living but they are primarily for the dead as an offering. Many different cultures give things as offerings to the deceased even Americans who tend to primarily give flowers but some other cultures and people in general offer many things some of which they eat, make, or drink for themselves such as : alcohol, food, drinks, toys, objects, various nature, corpses (usually animals... hopefully not people but ya never know 🤷), etc. Don't let anyone try to dissuade you from eating some of these those especially not with some bs about "culture" cuz everyone knows damn well there are Mexicans out there eating or licking these I knew someone myself who's mom made some for him to eat when I was younger Also if you wanna eat the big ones I say go for it you'll just meet your ancestors sooner 🕺
Oh and she would just start singing “This is the day they give babies away with a half a pound of Tea”🤣
Too funny- my Mum used to sing this song but not the Chorus - in a different tune - I was curious what the whole song was-I’m now 70 and the song will just come to Me in my thoughts so I know she’s watching over Me. I’ve never heard anyone else sing it. 🙏💜😇
I once saw her perform with Utah Philips....both legends.
Thanks so much for uploading this. It's probably been 40 years since I've heard it.
My wife and I used to sing this to our kids when they were little. They're between 11 and 18 now.
Isn’t funny how someone creates something and it sits with people the rest of their lives, like the memory of a loved family member or place you lived. I loved that song when I was but a young spud and here I am, as old now as Rosalie probably was then, maybe older. The song is as great now as the first time I heard it.
Thanks for sharing your story, work, and information.
I could have watched this for two more hours! <3 I am wondering what happens to the sugar skulls after Dia De La Muertes is done? Are they thrown out? Buried? Crushed? Left in the rain to dissolve? Tossed into a body of water? Brought out to cemetaries if they are not already there?
In the video the guy making the traditional sugar skulls in Mexico says they eat them. His are made of only sugar and water so they are edible. He says they make them out of chocolate and candy as well so people can eat them. 🙂
@@WickedAliens Thanks for writing! I did not know that <3
Ann.....just wanted to say hi to you and Marc. Charles Thibodeaux.

I think he passed away, knowing we were in better hands. Not the best. But better.
RIP sir.
I feel so upset. I just heard he died.

thank you! I understand sugar skulls much better now

You are a strong person. I loved you story and I can see you happy making the sugar skull. Im inspired! Thank you so much.
Just discovered the Savoy family and this video is a gem! Thank you.
Wow. Nice.
Beautiful harmony with Linda Rhonstadt!
I listen to Evangeline Made every day at work.
What great talent you and your family have! I would like to learn more about the Cajun people and their culture.
What would you like to know? My great great aunt was the first female cajun musician.
Many years ago I saw a German film about an accordion player who came from a small village in East Germany. He was granted a wish by his villager. He was the only one who was allowed to fly with his accordion to Louisiana/USA.He had a wonderful time there with a beautiful music. This was his love Cajun music and he died happy with this music.I never heard this music again and then, years later, the Savoy family and i saw ANN SAVOY on the right. I think the music of the family is very beautiful but it was only with this film that I realized the importance of Ann Savoy - a great musician!
Why are the top videos on sugar skulls about this same white lady?
She may look pale skinned but she could have Mexican heritage, or some other Hispanic ancestry. Or she could just be honoring this tradition, which she was drawn too.
I agree bro... why aren't we hearing more about traditional artists and craftsmen/women who grew up in the culture instead of white Americans? True that cultural and spirituality beliefs cross all barriers but rather than just showing this as a 'CRAFT PROJECT' that's sold or taught for monetary profit (a very healthy profit) I'd rather like to see more focus on old world artisans who actually live subversively in Indigenous/Christian fusion culture? I'm just so tired Americans monetizing EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY, even ones that aren't inherently theirs.
Love you all, 🌺❣😘
What a talented and generous man! Inspiring video.
Cajun music is similar to Irish folk and traditional music. For Example Sharon Shannon.
Culture vulture😒
How? Do you know they aren’t Mexican american? Because last time I checked we can be white as hell.
@@danidelafuente1 you mean more Spanish than indigenous...
love the content of the video but, the focus in and out was terrible. my eyes are stressed. but very informative.
Congratulations on overcoming alcoholism and finding your niche.
So I come to this years later. I am from the UK and watched a TV programme called "Ali Bain meets the Cajuns" about 20 years ago. I loved the music and it has remained with me. I play the CD but wish I had the DVD. I remember the Savoy contribution - I cannot find the song with the words "Dimanche a midi...". Anyway watching this video has been illuminating seeing Ann"s (if I may be so bold - I am British donch'a know) story.
From the video notes: Listen to the full episode: bit.ly/2cVANag
My admiration level has gone up as high as the Empire State building for these American Indian Ironworkers. Wow! These are real American Heroes!
