Neither! The 500mm mkii is the best, sharpest lens ever created by man. The 400mm and 600mm are actually a little less sharp, heavier, and the 600mm mkii has like 2 feet more added to it's minimum focal distance. The 500mm creates such a sharp image corner to corner that you cannot tell the difference in quality with extenders on at all. The 600's tend to be too long to carry long distances. The 400mm is too short imo. You really have to be very close to use it well. I wouldn't even consider the mkiii or RF versions, even if I had the money. The CA is not as controlled on those versions.

Since you have all these camera brands looking into the canon system would make sense, wouldn’t? About the way Canon has a 400 F2.8 for decades , nothing new there. Also with Canon I don’t see any difference or very little while using a 1.4 or 2x TC.

I don't like to leave the tripod foot on the lens. It gets in the way and who needs even more weight? Mine stays on my tripod.

This is a great and useful explanation of auto fine focus. And a question based on what I think we're doing here which is a calibration of the phase detect module, not the contrast algorithm. Therefore worrying about the ISO value is not necessary because the image is not used in the focus recalibration. Is this correct, or am I mistaken? Thank you.

a 600mm f/4 usually costs around $15,000 so if I ever get there then yeah I'll tuck it in bed with me too 🛌📷

I do not own or use the two telephoto lenses in this video. I do, however, own and use a 500mm f/4 for sports, wildlife, and surveillance. My 500 is flanked by a 200mm f/2.8 and a 1000mm f/11.

Nice. I did the sane thing at the end of June. Left my camper at Colter Bay and drove over to the same area around the dam for 4 mornings and evenings. No bears! Swans, elk and otters. Ended up finding bears up in Yellowstone the following week. Thanks for sharing.

Love the video. Was in GTNP early May and fortunate to see 610 with her cubs with snow falling right by the willows where you parked in this video. Love that bear. The fly hatching photos are incredible!! What a sight!

Those Caddisfly images were really cool.

I had my closest owl encounter recently. It was kinda dark, in a wooded parking lot with storms rolling in. Fortunately the barred owl was still long enough and close enough to fill the frame. 1/20th f6.3 iso 5000 worked. Unfortunately I trimmed it's tail feathers slightly. Filling the frame really helps with keeping detail at high iso. Great video👍👍

I'm happy to say I've photographed 610 and 399 several times. Just wish I lived closer, 10 hour drive is a lot to do on a weekend.
