Micro Four Thirds: What is Image Quality?

I took my Lumix GX-80 to visit the waterfalls around Goathland, I also took my Lumix 14-42mm kit lens along too, I wanted to see if I was happy with the image quality. 8:00 you can trick the camera into believing it's on a tripod if you screw in a quick release plate. At least mine lets me select high res shot that way, but ideally you want to have it on a tripod anyway, because the total time to capture is a bit slow in that mode

Sorry I know this is 2 years old but I was searching to see if I was alone with the lag. I shoot a lot of cinema spaces its very dark but I can see everything fine with the optical viewfinder but when used an evf the first time it really held me up having to move and wait for the viewfinder to catch up with every micro adjustment on the tripod. I thought maybe I just needed to educate myself a bit further as I found switching to bulb made things better but it was a bit fo a pain compared to what I was used to. I guess different tools for different jobs

Good point in that, who cares about what lens you use, its the composition which makes a photo great. And although better lensesa may take better images no lens will make you a better photographer.

The first TTArtisan lens I purchased was the 50 mm f1.2 for micro four thirds. It’s a heavy weight but the build quality is great and it’s super smooth focussing ring. The performance is totally adequate to my amateur photographer eyes. I’ve recently added the 25mm f2 and 50 mm f2 as their compact size are just the right balance for the EM1 mkii and EM5 mkiii. Both lenses are solid well made and produce lovely images. Yes they are all manual lenses but it makes you have to think about getting the settings right before pressing the shutter button.

I can't believe they found someone to buy and wear that t shirt 😂😂😂. My old Town. Yes tt artisans make some nice lenses. I have 2 now. My lenses are L mount. They proper lenses are hideous in price. The quality is very on par but you loose as you say auto focus and weather sealing. So far I'm happy with my cheap lenses.

I sort of disagree with your statement about not paying too much for third party lenses - but in a good way :) With ALL lenses you do - to some extent - get what you pay for. A kit 18-50mm lens bundled with a Canon or a Nikon or whatever will never compete on sharpness, contrast, or flare with a more pricey version. The same is true for third party offerings, however, if it is your dream to be a professional then the cheaper end of third parties offerings is the place to start as long as you accept that - in each lens - there will be weaknesses (generally if you push them to work at their extremes). I've gone in at the Contemporary end of the Sigma lens range - I know that they are not weather sealed and don't have IS - but they do a damned good job for the price. Cheaper third party lenses can also be equated to vintage glass, although some vintage glass does have a certain "quality" about it that some authors find appealing. Good video Chris. Definitely opens up a debate.

Kit lenses can’t be too bad because if they weren’t , and always resulted in shots that were dull or not sharp etc. , people would give up quickly and not go for the pro lenses as they evolve, or decide to make a job as a photographer.

I bought a 5d mark II a while back and a 70-200 f4 for shooting sports and the 50mm 1.8. I just picked up a EM10 mark II that I love and I’m asking you what system I should buy more lenses to? I’ve been for a 17-40mm or a 24-70mm 2.8 (sigma or Tamron) so I can shoot landscape with my 5d but it’s so heavy and I love my little m43. What would you have put your money into? Should I go with a Olympus 12-40mm 2.8 and maybe pick up a better m43 like your m1 mark II or keep investing in the EF system and a 6d or 5m3? I picked up a manfrotto 055 so I’m planning on shooting landscape and indoor dancing! 🤔 Thanks!

Really enjoyed this video Chris, especially as it was about photography in general. 100% agree with you on this topic although if you could afford the best quality lens you would get a sharper image. Maybe your viewer thinks we all have creative flare but just need a better camera. I think people have to ask themselves what they want from this first. For me, photography is about escaping from the four walls and enjoying the outdoors on my own. It doesn’t matter to me whether I take a single picture or not, photography is about me time. Keep up the good work mate 😊

I had the Lumix 14-42mm kit lens with my first MFT camera the G7. I always liked the IQ for city and landscapes it was sharp across the frame. I buy lenses that interest me I don't look at sharpness or MTF charts any more. I picked up a Samsung NX500 for fun APSC BSI 28MP sensor but honestly I prefer the IQ from the 16MP Lumix GX80 or the Ricoh GXR cameras some of which are only 12MP. High resolution really is a niche solution for commercial photographers, despite the fact that a lot of large YT channels try to convince us that 20-24MP is dated

You are right - any relationship between the cost of the lens and the "quality" of the image is a myth. However, be aware that if you push a cheaper lens to work at its extremes then contrast and sharpness WILL take a hit. I've got the Olympus 14-150 "plastic fantastic" lens - a lovely pit of kit for the price - but last year used it at the 150mm end to try and capture storm waves in the sea. Even shot RAW all the images were soft, and contrast was a real pain to try and recover. For this outing I should have used my 40-150 f/2.8 PRO because that would have given me much quicker AF and also superior sharpness. That waterfall image captured in the autumn was an absolute belter by the way! Very nice indeed.
