DRIVETRIBE 1st CAR SHOW with RICHARD HAMMOND! Amazing + RARE motors
After almost 7 years of creating world-class car content, DRIVETRIBE finally hosted its first car show at the Haynes International Motor Museum… and it didn’t disappoint.
CZcams sensations came to say hello, including AutoAlex, Adam C, Jimmy Broadbent and Mat Armstrong with Mr. Ben Collins (the Stig) also making an appearance. Plus TV royalty Richard Hammond was there, presenting the shenanigans along with DRIVETRIBE’s Mike Fernie, and getting rather philosophical during his Q+A segment!
This short video shows some of the amazing motors on display plus me presenting on camera for the first time ever on this channel. Take it as a kind of 1-year anniversary special if you will…
Enjoy!
Please like, comment, subscribe and support it’s greatly appreciated. Well done to DriveTribe for hosting such a great event…

Definitely the British automotive industry is probably one of the worst in the world whilst there are a few independent manufactures that are British owned most of the Big ones (E.G Mini or MG) are owned Under foreign ownership It’s simply because of British Leyland and the horrible government can be said for any industry even railways for example the exact same thing as happened With many industries in the UK and so are lots of car factories in the UK nowhere near as much If any “British” Car manufacturers exist anymore

The UK calling! My German father always drove a Beetle in the '50s, '60s and '70s (two different cars) and he simply got into it, started it, and drove it to work. Or Germany for family holidays. Meanwhile, in damp or frosty winter months, we were surrounded by UK-built cars, bonnets up, cranking over and over, owners cursing and spraying all sorts of magic starter fluids into their Fords/Austins/Hillmans/Vauxhalls etc. Mostly Fords though. There was just one winter morning his Beetle didn't start instantly. The battery had died. I followed suit driving air cooled VWs until 2017. I won't pretend they never broke down though - one time coming home from Germany in 1968 (repaired with a screwdriver), and another time in 2007 closer to home.

As a teen in the UK I always craved a TVR finally owned a S2 in Toronto back in the mid 90 ‘s , First time I took it for a serious drive in the country managed to achieve a 360 spin which was a major lesson in driving . Was constantly being yelled at while driving around Toronto “ what are you driving “ loved the car easy to maintain biggest issue was having to be so careful when parking as the front end was always subject to possible “ taps” on the concrete parking spacers . Never drove it October to March so I doubt if I put on 5,000 k in the 5 year ownership which was kinda silly but fulfilled a childhood dream .

Poor attitude, leads to poor work ethic, which leads to poor output, which leads to poor cars. Advances in technology and the provision of investment, does - NOTHING - to improve the situation in the manufacturing industry. The *ATTITUDE* of absolutely every single member of staff, is what counts for EVERYTHING when it really comes down to it. Were I in charge of British Leyland, the first thing I would have worked on, is de-corrupting the staff in absolutely every way possible - whether it be from being loaded up with bad news from the tabloids first thing in the morning and carrying the ethereal effects of that into the factory, or talking about idle matters such as football matches and "getting wasted" before and/or after the match. The same would go with toxic interrelationships - even those the staff aren't consciously aware of. The "strikes" that take place in this country are oftentimes miss the mark by a considerable margin as to the true origins of the discontent, so that the underlying causes are never appropriately addressed, but instead a sticking plaster over another sticking plaster is used to temporarily move matters sideways. It's so mind-numbing, that I have difficulty being able to appreciate quite how dysfunctional it really was.

I remember back in 1967, I was into club rallying with a SAAB 96. My friend whose parents owned the local garage had just bought and prepared a Mini Cooper S. On his first rally, the three spot welds on the bracket that secured the front suspension stabiliser arm let go leading to the collapse of the n/s front suspension and c/v drive shaft. A nut and bolt through the jigging hole would have resolved the problem, but a 2p bolt was just too much for British Leyland. Without quality control, all you do is is produce junk. So hardly shedding tears that the British motor industry went the way of the dodo. Not that SAAB was exactly defect free, but at least they went broke. OK, so rally driving a standard production car was hardly conductive to reliability, but I never bought another new car. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit

I don't think BL was what went wrong, BL was the culmination of what had gone wrong in the post-war era; the first step in a sequence of attempts to rescue BMC and the unfortunate companies that got drawn into mission highly improbable. Lack of cash hampered everything, as I think you rightly say, and they still didn't sort out the industrial relations. Many models were nevertheless better than is often depicted (the Allegro was a decent car in the end) but suffered because of lack of development before launch and because the workforce either wouldn't or weren't made to build them properly. I think your point about the Vanden Plas Allegro is a bit silly; it was a low volume version with a high price tag - what did it matter that it had a bit of running in first? At least the owners had a car that worked!!

Nice video. Just a small correction though, the car did not come with a driver figure. It had the golden jack wheels, opening doors and bonnet and sliding seats. There were also two versions of box for the 341 model, the one you have pictured and a similar one but with a kneeling mechanic with a wheel in the lower right hand corner .

British Leyland was a failed attempt at saving British auto manufacturers. British automakers were already destroying themselves before BL.

Splendid video sir, however, I believe that the delightful TR7 was the best possible outcome of this dark situation. It’s stylish looks and interior make it very appealing. Regardless of this, neither would stand up well against the brilliant cars being made in the land of the rising sun during this time.

I’m going to have to disagree with you there as I believe the ADO21 would have had a better chance against Japanese rivals, although there were barely any in the early 1970’s as the country were still making efficient economy cars. Although there’s more appreciation for them now, there’s no denying that the TR7 was a catastrophic flop too, it looked like a lump of cheese, should have been a soft-top and came with the wrong engine!

The Brits were so full of hubris after winning the war that they thought they knew better than everybody else and arrogance led to their automotive industry's downfall.
