  • Here we are ending the year on a high with the 4th instalment of the collecting game where the star of the show is this beautiful VW breakdown pickup, made by Corgi between 1967 and 1968.
The Volkswagen T1 is one of the most iconic and diverse vehicles ever created having been used throughout their 70+ years as everything from reliable workhorses to happy hippy mobiles. The classic 'V' shape look at the front with the big 'VW' embossed in centre is an archetypal design that's lasted the test of time too; and so has this model!
It's a beautiful casting with amazing details such as intricate toolbox and winding tow hook signifying Corgi's innovative toy ideas for the time.
The original T1 came in many forms throughout its 18 year production run causing around 1.5 million examples to be sold. It may have seemed like an all new inventive design but its wheelbase and air cooled engine were actually the same as that of the beetle with a strengthened chassis for heavier loads. However, these beautiful machines grant a huge price on the market today, that is of course when one pops up because they are so rare; and it's the same case with the Corgi version. This example with the rare 'Cast hubs' (noticeable by the indentations) and 'BREAKDOWN' side sticker is a real collectors item and prices are increasing rapidly. Hopefully this video tells you everything you need to know about what makes this toy so special. Enjoy.
