Overlanding on the South Dakota BDR-X
This week we will be traveling out to South Dakota and overlanding in a 2016 JKU. Overland camping and trailside cooking. Special thanks to the Back Country Discovery Route organization and people that have made these routes possible. Designed for adventure motorcycles than can also be traveled in a high lift overland 4x4. Please be respectful to private land owners and stay on the trails outlined.
The Black Hills BDR-X is the perfect introduction to a BDR in the midwest. With striking landscapes ranging from wide-open prairie, dense pine forests, and tall aspen trees, this 355-mile loop comprises three distinct sections and encompasses all the elements for your next adventure.
Enjoy a variety of gravel and dirt roads, challenging two-track, and some of the best pavement you’ve ever ridden as you make way through historical towns in an area that shaped the west.
Mount Rushmore, Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Spearfish Canyon, Cement Ridge Lookout Tower, and the Custer Wildlife Loop are some of the many incredible features dotting the landscape of this scenic route.

We have found that Race tracks have RV spaces that are mostly unused during the week, some with full hook ups and some without. But all have security and fenced facilities. Always call first to see if they allow non racers in the track RV area.
Race tracks are great places. I have meet some great people at the track !!
If your going to fling sausages around like that you better put on your safety glasses.....

@@THDC2015 doesn't surprise me that the people of South Dakota would be ordering Doomsday bunkers. They seem to be a pretty resilient type of folks out that way. See you out on the trail
It would be nice if you listed the towns you visited.
I can appreciate that. sometimes I like to keep the locations hidden to protect the property from vandal's but some I can mention.
Is it pretty dry most of the time?
@@newhampshirevideo I've been there multiple times and obviously when it rains it's feeling muddy there. But the rest of the time I would say that the vast majority of it is relatively dry. There are definitely some sections though that are challenging and wet, especially if you're looking for them
I've been to the rail car
its fading fast. Id give it about 5 or ten more years........one good snow load might flatten it... its a shame.
Some people here in New England take pictures of sap houses on different states of use each month and make a calendar. That would be a great thing to do with your pictures of abondoned properties.

Yeah it looks sort of like it was a seminary, or some sort of family camp Summer camp or religious camp. It's been boarded up for some time though. It's a shame somebody could use that resource

Did you do the Vermont portion and where there any part of the NEBDR that you would say our Jeeps could not do as this trail is marked for sport bikes?
I did not find any parts that I could not do with my Jeep there were definitely some places that I had to go very slow and a few were narrow f***** everything doable

New Hampshire is a no helmet state.....We still wear them when we are being crazy or steep terrain.

That’s actually the old hospital in Ambrose with the pile of wood. There was someone living in there about ten years ago when I was there. The school was destroyed in the 1950’s which is sad because it was a very nice looking building. There isn’t a lot of vandalism in North Dakota but some unsavory characters came in with the oil boom. The brown house with the 1980s Buick was in pretty good condition twelve years ago. I remember the school that was full of birds. Good to see all that stuff is still standing! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Oh, good to know. It was told to me it was a school. But a hospital makes complete sense. So glad you could recognize some of the photos and videos. Thanks for the background info.
Great adventure! I love following along and exploring these places, it’s like being there but not, and the narration is so much fun. The best part is taking pictures in my head as we go along, and creating compositions, I even use the shutter sound effect in my head while doing it, or I say click, Yup, I’m that weird. Well captured, thanks for sharing! Lol.

We ate nothing but crap this trip. lol...... not many lunch spots out in the fields of North Dakota.... But we hoteled it and at least we had good dinners !!!!!!!! Yes. Ill be doing more jeep videos very soon !!!

That was a great trail. You would be better off running tires that aren't strictly for mud. I was most impressed by the guy in the stock Ranger. A UTV keeping up with machines built for trails.

Nice video! Definitely earned a sub! Been to Rangeley twice, around the Height of Lands area. People are dumb drivers up there. I remember going a bit over the speed limit since it was very isolated, and then this car pulls out 150 yards ahead and was probably doing 30mph while down hill. Ended up passed on the double yellow because it wasn't worth crashing or slamming on my brakes. Don't really like bending rules but my safety comes first. But man your log truck story sounds wild man.
