Limits of BlueFin Tuna on Aztec Sportfishing Nov 1-4, 2023 3-day trip

Chartered by Andy, we did a 3 day on the Aztec out of Seaforth Landing. First time on this charter, met many new faces. Wasn't wide open, but we were able to get limits. Lots of casualties as we primarily fished 25lb/30lb leader and size 2 hooks all 3 days. When you got them on anything heavier, which was only twice for me the entire trip, I pulled like no other. Looking forward to the tear down video. I have a set of gen1 and a 12 and 16. Waiting for the holiday sales to get the 2 larger sizes. Last year one of the tackle shop in New Jersey had a 25% off gift card after Christmas. I bought myself a $2,000 card at 25% off to buy all my new talica. Free shipping and no tax makes it a steal.

      Hi Kevin, I do own spinning for my surf, freshwater and 1 single large spinner that's a Shimano Saragosa 14,000 size for offshore that I've owned for 2 seasons, but yet to catch anything on. I have it setup with a popper for long casts. Have yet to catch with it, but I wouldn't use it for big ones. I see lots of guys get worked on spinners mostly because you can't rest it on the rail like a conventional. If it's the only setup, start with it, but if you're after BFT, rent if you don't have conventionals. Hope that helps.

    I love the zoom-in on the reel when you were getting bit! Nice touch! When you hook these fish on light line (25 lb) it's important to keep your thumb off of the spool and not clamp the line down on the rod. If they want to run, you have to let them. You have to rely on your drag, and with a star drag (vs 2-speed) you can usually get away with one or 2 clicks higher when they're straight up and down. The ones you got were nice! I went 10 for 14 out at Cortez a couple weeks ago. On 25 lb and small hooks there were some long fights. Luckily our last afternoon they were biting 40 and we finished up boat limits and left them biting!

    • @Seastheday88

      Good eye and first person to note that. I 100% agree with you. I was using 25lb on my last 3day nov 2023 and I let them run, my fights were getting into the 30min range for 40-50lbers. Im sure you know the feeling from your recent trip. I knew these were a hair smaller so I was cheating with my thumb 😆. Glad you got to finish limits with 40lb, I think I haven't been bit on 40lb since 2022 even though it's one of my first setup to get wet 🤣

      All these are way big for pike fishing in Scandinavia, here a 300 size is most used, and very often a 200. I have only 200 reels, have had Tatula 300 but is unnecessary weight, the 200 or Coastal 200 i use is capable of handling the pike and lure weight i cast which is ~4,5oz. Also have a Curado 201M, latest gen, also using it for the same, only downside is the smaller spool, only using 0,20-0,25 braid on it, coastal 200 uses 0,30 Berkley X9 on both, best line i used by far. How much drag can you realistically get on the fathom fishing knife and sinker? Would this reel be ok with some 100 mc? Some dude said he gets 30. At full and 350 yards of 100 is all you need to kill a cow? What’s your opinion?

    • @Seastheday88
      @Seastheday88 Před měsícem

      I personally wouldn’t push it for 100lb. I’d fish it for 60lb ideally. You’ll go through pinion bearings faster if pushed higher. You’ll notice there is more resistance tension winding on Strike without anything hooked up. That’s due to higher drag and max pressure than the reel is able to handle. Some people have got away with it. Just needs more service in between.
